I've been focusing on painting the miniatures for Game: Shadows of Brimstone so haven't done much else with my free time. I've done a lot but I look at the pile of minis still on sprues and get a bit depressed. With Shadows of Brimstone: Forbidden Fortress coming sometime this year, I realize I'll have another huge pile. Storage has been an issue too which won't get any better with the new Japanese themed stuff.
I'm still focusing on my shelving issue. I've decided to sell off my entire Traveller RPG collection which ties up half a shelf in my computer room and 1.5 shelves in my bedroom. That should open up some space, not much since I'm trying to remove a shelf unit in my bedroom. So mostly it will give me half a shelf in my computer room. I still need to clear out more space. It's getting hard since I don't have a lot left I'm interested in dumping. I keep thinking of better storage options but it would require some major remodeling, like a wall shelf system. Sometimes I feel like a slave to my stuff. I was talking to my aunt that has lived in the same house since the 70's. It's a huge house and has so much stuff and now she's trying to figure out what to do with it all. Someday she's going to need to move to an assisted living place and will have to get rid of 3/4 of her stuff. I've been trying to offer her suggestions but its just too big of a project and she feels overwhelmed. I don't think we're hoarders but still you collect a lot of stuff as you get older.
Terraforming Mars - 3D Printed Tiles
I found a guy on Etsy that made some nice 2 color tile replacements. My game group loves this game so I've invested a fair amount of money into it. I also bought an "Insert Here" insert that just showed up last week. It's foamcore instead of wood so nice and light. Seems well made and was designed specifically to fit with the Board Game Boost acrylic overlays (sorry, no pic of the insert).
Our first game using the new tiles, played at Orrcon 18 in LA.
Chitin: I - Markers for Basic/Worker Counters
Last time we played Chitin: I we realized it was annoying to find Basic/Worker units mixed in stacks. So came up with a way to mark them with a 1.5mm wood extender block painted a unique color. Now they are obvious when in a stack of other units.
A4 Quest - PnP Build
Saw this game and loved the art so built a copy of it. I made one significant change, I enlarged the game tiles by 50%. They were so small and had a lot of icons on them so wanted them easier to read. Plus the cute art is easier to enjoy.
Game: Shadows of Brimstone - New Magnifier & Monster Minis!
My most important recent purchase was a brand new lighted magnifier. It's 10x and has 60 LED's with a 4.5" lens. It cost $100 but worth every penny. I can't believe I was working with a tiny 3x with an additional 3x head mounted magnifier (which gave me a headache). If you want to get serious about painting, make sure you have good light and good equipment. Spending 100's of hours doing this means you need a comfortable place to work. I also bought a new back cushion for my dining room chair to give me added support.
Slogging through the miniatures. I've been trying to keep the pace. Would like to get an enemy group done once a week but that sometimes can be hard depending on how complex the details are and how many total minis are in each group. Sometimes 3 big ones, sometimes 12+ small ones. And the small ones usually have a lot of small details that require more precision.
I made some good progress. I'm focusing on basic enemies and the enemy groups from the first 3 Other Worlds. I also need to paint the 6 heroes from Wave 2 and the allies. I got the vampires and Crimson Hand guys glued and ready to paint so will focus on the heroes after those are done.
I won 2nd place in the February Photo Contest with my working miniature lantern prop I bought from Etsy!
Pillars of Eternity: Lords of the Eastern Reach - Tabletop Simulator!
The guys at Tabletop Simulator wanted to do a version of our game and it finally went live a few months back. They did a wonderful job and we're so happy to have it available. It's up on Steam in their DLC library.
That's it for now. As for future non-Brimstone projects, I still want to do a graphic redesign of Rivets. I might take a painting break after I get the heroes/allies painted so might be a good project for then. I'm sure other stuff will come up. Zero Radius Games is playtesting a new game right now. It's a neat design and I'm excited at what we can do with the art. Still a long way to go before we even consider putting it on Kickstarter. We'll be focusing on it this year. Though we've gone through several ideas so might do something else. We need to be passionate about whatever we do since pubishing a board game is a lot of time and hard work.
A blog focusing on my boardgame player aids, graphic designs, and miniature painting.
