Off the Board

A look at games that typically involve cards, tiles, or dice and how my wife and I fit in gaming with an infant.

Kickstarting the Habit

This summer as my wife and I were about ready to expect our first child we were spending much of our time indoors and playing games. When we weren't playing games we were relaxing on the couch and I was mostly browsing BGG. I happened upon the Kickstarter Geeklist and became immediately interested in all of the games and small publishers that were trying to get their games published.

At this point I have backed the following games:
1. Carnival
2. Borogove
3. DIG: The Card Game
4. Super Showdown
5. Creatures
6. Sanitarium
7. Pizza Theory
8. Lemonade Stand
9. DICEafari
10. D-Day Dice
11. Rise!

I also picked up Mirror, Mirror and Dark Horse after Kickstarter ended and those games have been fun and am still debating another Kickstarter game I missed out on, Fealty.

All of these games tend to follow our usual gaming habits of being either a card game or use dice. While I am still waiting many of these games to arrive at my door the ones that have come already have been fantastic and really enjoyable for us to play after the little one goes to sleep.

I would say without Kickstarter, I would not have had as much fun over the past few months with games than what I have had. I think our favorite game has been Carnival from the production quality to the gameplay it is nothing short of awesome. This game has ended up replacing Monopoly Deal as our go to quick game at night.

The other game we were lucky enough to get a copy of and is now up on Kickstarter is Farmageddon. The Kickstarter URL is This is another game that plays great with two and has incredible artwork. I will be dedicating an entire blog entry to Farmageddon later this week. For now all I can say is this is a quick playing card game that you don't want to miss out on.

I think the reason why I like Kickstarter so much is because I always feel like I am supporting a small publisher trying to get their company going and the designers are always involved with the community. It also feels good to help out the little guys and we get some entertainment out of it in a new, fun game to play!
