I'm one of the environmental artists that worked on The Outer Worlds. An environmental artist is someone that makes the various maps and props for the characters to interact in. Think of us as the set & prop designers. Early in the project we focused on the tiles (sets) and props. We'd get concepts and then build it in 3D to use in the game. That's a simple breakdown of what our team does.
So while working on various items like shelves, cabinets, crates, etc, concepts for bar games showed up on the list. And, of course, I asked if I could make the 3D models for them.
I added a lot of wear since these things would be beat up from years of playing. Life in Halcyon is tough, most people don't have TV's and limited computer access. They spend most of their free time in bars.
These were a blast to do. Modeling was done in 3D Studio Max. The texturing was done in Substance and the board art in Photoshop.
I did make the full deck for the card game at 300 dpi just in case we ever want to print out a real set. We don't have rules for it but if I ever do make a deck I know plenty of game designers to come up with one.
The dart board has animated lights.
I worked on several interior and exterior areas. Here's a few shots of some of the areas I worked on.
Hope you enjoy the images and if you are playing it, have fun!
