Welcome to Steph's "New to Me" List 2019!

This year I have made the goal of learning 300 games!

Steph's Awesome Spectrum Rating System!

Steph's Sad Cloud Rating 1-2.5/10
Steph's Bland Rainbow Rating 3-4.5/10
Steph's Primary Rainbow Rating 5-7/10 (Solid Play)
Steph's Super Rainbow Rating 7.5-8.5 (Keepers)
Steph's Double Rainbow Rating 9-10/10 (Top Favorites)

July List
from Worst to Best

Billionaire Rumor:

This is a pretty early prototype version of the game. I provided more development suggestions than review points. In my opinion, I can't rate this game accordingly as it still needs a lot of development before they work on a Kickstarter. I think there is potential here, so here's hoping.

No Rank/10 After 1 play (Owned-prototype)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Hexus:

I was forewarned about this game. #stillplayed. Roll and move with few to no choices. Awesome blocks, but that is about all.

3/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Control:

Tug-of-war dueling type of game. You can play with more players but it is really a take-that fest. Really just not my type of game.

3/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Enuk:

Unfortunately, a lot of copies were allocated the wrong punchboards which makes the game unplayable. Played through what I could, but all in all, don't care enough to try and get replacement boards if they even exist anymore. It is push-your-luck anyway, and I am terrible at that.

4/10 After 1 play (Not Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Unlock! The Nautilus' Traps:

Definitely one of the weaker Unlock games I have played. Was almost more frustrating than exciting. Would recommend any of the others over this one.

5/10 After 1 play (Not Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Rainbow:

Perfectly fine trick-taking game. Hard to really gauge your opponents and when to play certain cards. Not sure there is as much depth as I want there to be. I would be happy to play it on occasion though. It's fine.

6/10 After 2 plays (Owned-prototype)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

High Society:

Knizia title that never crossed the table until now. Interesting bidding mechanic. I don't love that the game could end at anytime after the 3rd blue card is drawn. One I could play again, but not excited to.

6/10 After 1 play (Not Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Gem Hens:

Colorful game! I almost wish there were more variety in the types of actions you can take with your dice. I love all the dice and want more options. It is fun to collect the gems, but if you know you have lost, there is not much you can do to make up the lost points.

6/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Keys to the Castle:

Kinda fun to create your own path and try to stop your opponent. I had some really bad luck, but there was laughing involved. Much better than I thought it would be.

6.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Monster Lands:

Potential to like this more than I already do. Tough first game where I just got hammered on. I like the different things to use the dice for and recruiting people. Seems like a cool game if you roll well enough.

6.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Chocolatiers:

Can be AP inducing. Probably best with 2 players to keep it snappy. Love the theme and drafting. I want to play a few more times to get a good feeling for it and to see if it gets too samey.

6.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Blank Slate:

Cute party game and one I can play anytime. I think it will be great for family gatherings as the rules are very simple and intuitive. Better with larger groups too, which is great.

7/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Century: Eastern Wonders:

I do like this more than Spice Road. Maybe the 3rd in the series will be the best of the 3. For now, I am hanging on to this one since I like it well enough. Not sure it will hold much interest for long, but I am happy to play it when requested.

7/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Doctor! Doctor!:

Never thought I would enjoy a doctor game, but here we are. This is a dexterity game where you are under pressure of the timer to pull out specific card types from a stack. It is super cute and works really well for a dexterity game. Very enjoyable!

7/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Unlock! Night of the Boogeymen:

Some new mechanics I haven't seen in the Unlock series before. It was clever and kept us on our toes. Recommended.

7/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Ticket to Ride: London:

Very much like T2R New York. I definitely don't need to own both of them, so I have no desire to go out and get this one. Happy to play it and I love New York, but they are just too similar. Either works for me!

7/10 After 2 plays (Not Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Unlock! The House on the Hill:

Another enjoyable Unlock game. I will play them all and hopefully have a good time doing it. This was one of the better ones, maybe since we didn't actually run out of time.

7/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Mountains:

Push-your-luck game with an awesome stamp gimmick. With more players, there will be more of a memory aspect too. Great for kids and families. Would be happy to play it again!

7/10 After 2 plays (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Lunatic:

Card game that plays out with a familiar raise-your-bid mechanic as found in Liar's Dice. Definitely bluffing involved. Fun game and one I will want to play more of.

7/10 After 1 play (Owned-prototype)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Sorcerer:

Love the variety, with lots to explore and combo. I have had a good time playing this one and look forward to playing it more.

7/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Curators:

Solid game. Puzzly tile-laying action selection. Love the use of coin actions. Trying to plan out how to get the double actions as frequently as possible is a fun challenge. Happy to play this one more.

7.5/10 After 1 play (Owned-prototype)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle – Defence Against the Dark Arts:

HP theme is automatically awesome for me. Wish it were cooperative to replicate Hogwarts Battle a bit more. All in all, I think it is a pretty good 2-player duel game. Stayin' in the collection for sure.

7.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Tricky Tides:

Clever use of cards. I love that you are limited by the direction the cards allow. Also love the monster variant. I think this would be well-loved by card players and casual gamers. Easy rules and easy to play. Really enjoyable.

7.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Nētā-Tanka (Deluxe Edition):

Really nice game here. There are a lot of paths to take and points to claim. Clever gameplay is the way to victory. Happy to play this one again.

7.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Sierra West:

Nice use of cards with lots of choices. I like that there are 4 modules in the box for different gaming experiences. I look forward to trying this one again soon!

7.5/10 After 1 play (Not Owned/Wishlist)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Vinyl:

Love the theme and art. Simple to understand worker-placement game, with an interesting worker-displacement mechanic. With the expansions, you will get even more variety so those will be exciting to try!

7.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

The Rise of Queensdale:

This is an optimistic rating. I only played the first game, so this rating could go up or down depending on the enjoyment of future plays. I like what I am seeing so far!

8/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Imhotep: The Duel:

One of my favorites from the Kosmos 2-player line. Really love the tough choices and trying to make it all work. It gives you the feeling of playing Imhotep, however, I'd rather play this duel game. Would totally play this any time. Really nice.

8/10 After 2 plays (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Crossroll Hong Kong:

Really great roll n write game. Lots of choices and almost an easier to understand version of メトロックス (MetroX). I love that you can choose the 2 dice you can roll, which gives you more control over what you might see. Really excited for this one.

8/10 After 1 play (Owned-prototype?)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Kingdomino Duel:

LOVE THIS! Roll n write 2-player game. Tough choices with drafting dice and one I will bring with me everywhere. I am really loving this game!

8/10 After 3 plays (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Fleet: The Dice Game:

So many choices. So many bubbles to fill in. Hard to track your bonuses, but with more plays I think it will get easier. Super loved playing this and will have to immediately acquire this one. Really fun roll n write game.

8.5/10 After 1 play (Not Owned/Wishlist)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Aeon's End: The New Age:

The game every Aeon's End lover needs. You get to combine all other versions of Aeon's End for campaign type games! LOVE THIS! It's not AS good as Legacy, but it is everything I want if I can't have more Legacy. #musthave

9/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth:

Love the use of the app. Love the theme. Can't wait to play through the entire campaign game. Definitely gonna be one of my top games for the year. Love it.

9.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Game of the Month!!

The 7th Continent:

Oh man, this one is a rollercoaster! I played out the recommended intro scenario (Crystal's Song) and fell in love. Then I played 10+ hours into the Voracious Goddess on a gameday and died. It was a horrible feeling. I am giving the rating off of the experience of playing this game and not the result. I guess I just need to saddle up and play through it all again until I win. Not much else I want to play until it happens. Maybe I have been cursed.

9.5/10 After HOURS of play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

New to me Expansions!

Welcome To...: Easter Egg Hunt & Doomsday Thematic Neighborhoods:

Wonderful addition to an awesome game. More to shake up the boards a bit and I am loving it.

8/10 After 1 play (Owned)

mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb mb

Chronicles of Crime: Welcome to Redview:

Really enjoyable expansion and probably my favorite of the cases so far. Nothing is too far-fetched. Reminds me of Stranger Things a bit. I like the crit checks with the dice. More interesting theme for kids/teens to engage with. Great fun.

8.5/10 After 1 play (Owned)
