Edgar S. Paxson (April 25, 1852 - November 9, 1919) was a completely self-taught artist known for his paintings of the American West. He was born to Quaker family in East Hamburg, New York. His only known artistic influence was Albert Bierstadt whose paintings of the West he viewed as a boy in Buffalo, New York.
His painting Custer's Last Stand
became a sensation in the days before motion pictures. The painting is now displayed at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. This painting was used as the cover artwork for the games INVALID OBJECT ID=23764, type=thing, Custer's Last Stand: The Yellowstone/Little Bighorn Campaign, 1876
