In early 2001, Josiah (my 7 year old stepson) and I set out to see if we could come up with a game to play American Football with dice. My stepson is British, hence the reason for "American" in front of "Football". Although I lived in Britain for 6 years, this is a term which always sounded strange, and it still does!
As we developed the game, we tried to capture every intricacy of the gridiron with nothing more than dice. It didn't take long before we realized that we were going to need more and more dice to cover all the possibilities. Eventually, the effort devolved into a decision-less dice-fest, and interest waned. We finally abandoned the idea about three weeks later. But little did I know, two small seeds were planted with the experience.
The first sprouted almost immediately! I noticed that Josiah was starting to design board games with his 4 year old brother, Daniel. Using just pencils, paper, and pennies, they would bring me their creations, and we would "give them a go". It was wonderful to watch their interest in games blossom!
Fast forward to January 2004. Daniel and Josiah's mum and I separated a year before, and I'd not been able to see my stepsons for over 6 months. It seems a stepdad has no rights when a marriage breaks down. Preparations to leave Britain, and return to my native Texas, had begun. While doing some preliminary packing, I came across the written rules for the American Football dice game Josiah and I worked on 3 years before. They were still stuffed inside the plastic drinking cup we used as a dice cup, along with about 18 dice. The emotion was overwhelming, as I was taken back to a happier time. And it was on that cold winter's day that the second seed, dormant for so long, unexpectedly sprang to life!
Over the next 18 months, I took that forgotten idea, simplified it, re-worked it, tested the results, then reworked it some more. With lots of playtesting, tweaking and re-tweaking, the work slowly evolved into a challenging game loosely wrapped around the theme of "American Football" with a good balance of strategy and chance. And that game became GRIDDLE!, the cornerstone of Josdan Games.
So, that's the story. Four years later, on October 24th 2005, I launched a venture inspired by 2 little boys in Britain (who are not so little any more). It was a rather cold and blustery Texas day, a bit like British weather actually. And if you were wondering, the name "Josdan" is a concatenation of the first three letters from Josiah and Daniel. Graphics representing their half-shadowed, smiling faces were featured in all Josdan Games logos.
