Alex was born in Athens in 1973. He is happily married and father of three children. He is a former mariner and he currently lives in Macedonia of Northern Greece at the 11th cent Byzantine city of Drama. Southwest and 30km (18 miles) away lies Amphipolis where Alexander the III started his epic Persian campaign and the Spartan polemarch Vrasidas fought and died together with his opponent the Athenian Cleon during the Peloponnesian war. The ancient Roman battlefield of Filippoi lies 20km (12 miles) south. The Metaxas Line (a chain of fortifications constructed along the line of the Greco-Bulgarian border, designed to protect Greece in case of a Bulgarian invasion after the rearmament of Bulgaria), lies 25 km (15 miles) north and especially the fortification complex of Lisse in which ferocious battles took place between the Greek defenders and the German XVIII Mountain Corps and XXX Army Corps commanded by the German General Wilhelm von List.
In ancient times Drama was one of the most important centers of Dionysian worship and had the name "Idonida Earth." Not accidentally, there is a wine tradition in the region since its geographical position and climate of the valley surrounded by mountains and Paggaio and Baldy, offers ideal conditions for growing vines and producing wines of the highest quality. The varieties planted and cultivated at this time in the area, not a few, show that Drama is a gifted area of interest, individual microclimates, able to show foreign varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Grenache, Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Semillon, Ugni Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and many local varieties such Roditi, Assyrtiko, Limnio, Athiri.
The winemakers of Drama – there are nine wineries of which seven are open to visitors – have managed to build a vineyard area spanning across approximately 500 hectares, which produces excellent wines and its constantly winning international awards for the quality of its wines.
He is a booklover and has graduated from the Hellenic Open University with bachelor degree in "Greek Civilization".
He is the co-designer of 'Byzantio'. The word "Byzantine" was created by the German historians during the 18th century to help them distinguish the two roman empires (east/west). The actual historic word is "East Roman Empire", the inhabitants of that time called them selves Romans and not Byzantines.
