John Gollon (January 13, 1944 - August 24, 1999) was a Canadian-born, life-long scholar of chess variations. His book Chess Variations: Ancient, Regional, and Modern first appeared in 1968 with a second edition in 1973. He was also a supervisor at a detective agency and the city editor for the Geneva Free Press. Gollon was in the process of writing a second book on chess variations prior to his death. He collected many chess and military-type games. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, he was legally blind, yet he played chess at a very high level.
