Ryan is from Durham, North Carolina. Ryan graduated from North Carolina State University in 2006 with a Bachelors in Business Management and Marketing. In December 2014, Ryan graduated from George Washington University with a Masters of Business Administration in Healthcare Management. He has a dog named Mozi, a cat named Loki, and a regulation-sized wiffle ball field in his back yard.
Ryan developed the idea for Synergy: A Business Strategy Game during the summer of 2014 while Ryan was enrolled in an MBA Entrepreneurship class at GWU. During a discussion about equity valuation, Ryan joked about wanting to play an imaginary variation on Monopoly – “Monopoly: Equity Valuation Edition” – to practice his skills. Ryan had always thought Monopoly was a bit too easy and formulaic. Despite being described as a “business board game,” Monopoly was just an overly simplified allusion to the real estate development industry in the business world. Ryan wanted a more in-depth, thorough experience that actually mirrored real life scenarios across a wide range of industries, but a smart, educational, and fun game based on the business world did not exist. Because there were no enjoyable options for anyone who wanted to play a fictional, yet realistic, simulation game modeled after real world business scenarios, Ryan decided to make one. This product idea led the creation of SEMA Games, a gaming company with a mission to “develop entertaining and exciting games based on simulations of real world scenarios.” The mission and the thoughts behind its development was ingrained in every step of the decision making process throughout the creation of our product and has helped to focus our business strategy.
