Description Edit | History

In the 1920s, some card players were looking for a game to play on their yacht. They tried dice, but they found the existing dice games unsatisfying. So they invented a game based on poker hands, but using dice. They called the game Yacht, after the place it was first played.

In the original game, each player has a scoresheet with 12 lines. On each turn, a you roll the five dice up to three times, then record a score in one of the 12 lines of your scoresheet. The game lasts 12 turns, and each space can be used only once. On the later turns, your options are limited, and on the last turn you must use the last available space. If the dice you have rolled do not qualify for the scoring line you choose, you score zero.

The scoring lines and their values are as follows:

Name Score Requirements
Aces
1 for each 1
Twos
2 for each 2
Threes
3 for each 3
Fours
4 for each 4
Fives
5 for each 5

The above is copied from Yahtzie in Luck, a package of dice games. It agrees with The New Complete Hoyle (1956), though the order of the lines is different. Other published versions were similar

The biggest event in the Yacht history was the publication of Yahtzee in 1956 by Edwin S. Lowe. Yahtzee adds a thirteenth line--3 of a Kind--and changes the straights a little, but the big difference is the upper section bonus: If your score in the first six rows (Aces through Sixes) is 63 or more, you score a bonus of 35 points.

In 1963, Spare-Time Products published Kismet. Kismet uses specially marked dice, where 1 and 6 are black, 2 and 5 are red, and 3 and 4 are green. Three of the combinations in Kismet require numbers which match in color. Kismet also has higher bonus levels for upper section scores of 71 and 79.

Many variations of Yacht have been published over the years, including Challenge Yahtzee, where everyone uses the same die rolls, and Word Yahtzee which uses words.
