Ragnarok was founded in 2013 by Joe Martin and Tim Marquitz
after a successful Kickstarter campaign for Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters, an anthology. Joe and Tim developed a plan to publish dark genre fiction and chose Ragnarok as the brand, the company name bearing significance to Joe, who has been a long-time history and mythology junkie.
Ragnarok's first year wrapped up with another successful Kickstarter campaign (Blackguards). The fledgling publisher seems to have been pinned as one of the up-and-coming independent presses, the quality of their titles compared to the likes of books published by Angry Robot, Jo Fletcher Books, Pyr, and Orbit.
In October 2015, Ragnarok announced they have signed a worldwide distribution deal with the Independent Publishers Group (IPG), the second largest independent book distributor in the United States. That same month they also launched a Kickstarter campaign for their first game product, a card game created by best selling author Mark Lawrence and entitled Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
