The Game of Pope and Pagan was published in 1844 by W. & S. B. Ives of Salem, Massachusetts. They are regarded as the first producers of board games in America.
The game itself is a themed edition of the classic game of Siege. A "Christian Army" of missionaries lays siege to the "Stonghold of Satan" which is occupied by the Pope and Pagan. The missionaries may move only on paths painted green and labelled with moral qualities such as "kindness", "Purity", etc. Despite this movement restriction, as in the classic game, the attacking force will always win with careful play.
The board features two hand painted engravings.
