The word “hanafuda” is a combination of two Japanese kanji. Hana- (花) means “flower” and -fuda (札) means “card.” These “flower cards” are Japanese playing cards that are used to play a wide variety of games from all around the world.
Modern Hanafuda is a new set of hanafuda cards that take the floral motifs and symbology from a traditional hanafuda deck and translates them into a beautiful and contemporary design. The style of each card is reminiscent of paper cut-outs but will actually be accomplished through the use of vector design. All the art was created by Sarah E H Thomas.
Each card will measure 2.32 inches x 4.5 inches (59mm x 115mm). All cards will be printed on 300 gsm playing card stock with a linnen finish. 2 special turn cards have been added to the deck in order to help new players learn the suits. On top of that, a rulebook for the widely popular game Koi Koi is also included in each deck. The final deck is packaged in a custom designed tuck box to keep everything sorted and pristine when not in use.
