From the back of the box:

The Ultimate Game of Strategy and Intrigue

Invented by an architect, and played around the world, Plateau is the unique game that combines the strategic depth of Chess with the thrill and intrigue of poker.

It is played on a 4 x 4 grid and each player has twelve-coded pieces. Win by creating what the author calls a "charmed assemblage" (a six-stack of your pieces) or win by capturing six of your opponent's pieces.

From this simple structure emerges a game that is very complex, subtle, and more keenly psychological than any game you have played before.
