Connexion is played on a 5x5 grid of 25 squares, with 25 tiles matching the size of the squares on the board. Each tile has a diagonal bar connecting the centers of two sides, and a right-angle bar connecting the centers of the other two sides. These tiles when placed together in any combination form pathways. A wild card square may also be included, with two straight bars crossing each other and connecting opposite sides. The bars on each square are of the same color as the outer border of the playing field, contrasting only with a background color.
Two or more players take turns placing tiles with one of two goals, completing a circuit, or completing a path between two sides of the board. The first player to do so wins the game. According to the designer, the goals may be adjusted according to the players' wishes, and the game may be played on larger boards with more tiles if desired.
