The Core Game for the Ninth Edition Core Set was a two-player starter set. It was designed to introduce new players to Magic: The Gathering. The set had a walkthrough demo game set up for two players with preconstructed 33 card decks for each player in a specific order for the demonstration game. It included an "advanced booster pack" of 14 cards (7 for each player) to make a minimum deck of 40 cards to play the game. It also included paper playmats and cardboard life counters to help learn the game.
