Dominion_CompleteRules_v3_1.pdf (2.48 MB) (Log in or Register to download.)
Version 3.1

This is a compilation and a rewriting of all rules from all the rulebooks as well as all online rulings by the game designer. See the description in the post for version 1.0 below.

This minor version contains no new released cards, but completes what was started in version 3, namely second editions of all the cards. Hinterlands (after the base game and Intrigue) is now released in a second edition. The cards from the remaining expansions are up on Dominion Online in new versions, so therefore they are included here.

Changes in this version
* Second editions: A new section dedicated to second-edition changes, and a new entry in the index (instead of the two added in version 3.0)
* Second editions of cards: Outpost, Scheme, Stash and Embargo are functionally changed; some cards are now changed according to previous errata (Envoy, Black Market, Possession...); and several cards are now expressed more clearly (Nomad Camp...)
* Your cards at game end: Removed instruction to return set-aside cards etc to your deck before scoring, and instead made it clearer which cards are yours, in line with new card texts
* Card reference: Updated Wine Merchant and Nomad Camp/Artisan.
* Several smaller improvements and fixes throughout

Corrections
* Minor correction of the timing of Possession (only when your cards are trashed)

Version 3.0

This is a compilation and a rewriting of all rules from all the rulebooks as well as all online rulings by the game designer. See the description in the post for version 1.0 below.

Version 3 incorporates the second edition of Dominion (base game) and Intrigue, including of course the 14 new cards, plus the new promo Sauna/Avanto.

Changes in this version
* New cards: Added the new cards to the Card Reference and all other relevant sections. The new cards are marked with the new expansion symbol; the "removed" cards (that were not included in the second editions) only have the old symbol; the old cards that are also included in the second editions have both symbols
* Second editions: Added explanation about second editions, including updated card texts (most importantly Masquerade and Throne Room) and new base cards design (mostly under "Components of the game"). Also new entries in the index: "Dominion (base game) 2nd edition" and "Dominion: Intrigue 2nd edition"
* Shuffling: Changed explanation of shuffling based on the new rule introduced in Dominion second edition, which affects Stash
* Durations: New ruling about when Throne Rooms are discarded when played on Durations
* Card reference: Extra explanations about Charm, Fortune, Library, Pilgrimage
* Removed the section "Checking card properties" under "Common effects" (since the concept of "checking" cost, type or name ultimately was too vague without including every ability that mentions these properties)
* Several smaller improvements throughout

Version 2.1

See the general description of this document in the post for version 1.0 below. I'm posting this minor update because of the new hyperlinks and also the correction about start-of-turn (see below).

General
* All through the "Card reference" there are references in green text to common effects described earlier in the chapter - these are now all hyperlinks (Thanks to Derek for suggesting this)
* Improved formatting in section "Open information"
* Other small changes

Corrections
* Start-of-turn abilities were incorrectly stated as happening before the Action phase - this matters for Crown
* Setup: Note about using 8 Colonies in a 2 player game
* Game end: Note about counting Curses at game end

Version 2.0

See the general description of this document in the post for version 1.0 below.

Version 2 incorporates the new Dominion expansion, Empires, as well as containing many other fixes and changes.

New in this version
* Section "Guide to this document"
* Intro at the top of "Objective of the game"
* Sections for the new mechanics from Empires: Debt, split piles, Landmarks
* Section on piles with differently named cards (Ruins, Knights, split piles, Castles) - including explanation of types and cost of piles
* Section on VP tokens (of course this mechanic was also in Prosperity, but now needed its own section because of new ways of using it)
* Some new definitions of terms (in index): spend Coin token, pay off Debt, take token, add token

Changes
* Split chapter II - Basic Game Rules into three chapters: Essential Rules (II), Basic Rules (III) and Additional Rules (IV). The more complex rules are in chapter III. Chapter IV has all the rules for mechanics from expansions. "Guide to this document" outlines how to best read these chapters.
* More logical grouping of "Components" into Cards, Mats and Tokens
* Streamlined section "Your turn", including emphasizing the two parts of the Buy phase
* Specifying that coins, Actions and Buys are reset at the beginning of your turn and persist throughout
* Improvements in the "Overview of ability triggers" and "Summary of your turn"
* Card/Event/Landmark/player token reference: In the first section "Common effects", added "Card costs" (to clarify coin, debt and potion costs), "Copy of a card/Differently named cards" and "Variable coin production"; and improved "Cost reduction" and "Remodel card"
* Card/Event/Landmark/player token reference: Instead of having four different lists, combined them into one, with Events blue and Landmarks green (actually teal).
* Card/Event/Landmark/player token reference: More clarifications and rulings in the entry for Band of Misfits, Black Market, Possession, Swamp Hag, Your -1 Card token, Your -$1 Cost token, Your Estate token (Inheritance), and countless other minor additions and changes.
* Of course updated all relevant sections with all the cards, Events, Landmarks and new mechanics from Empires
* Many smaller additions and changes throughout

Corrections
* New erratum (from Empires rulebook) about Possession and taking tokens
* New ruling about Nomad Camp
* Correction of the timing of Lighthouse and Champion for protection against attacks
* Correction of the timing of Market Square (only when your cards are trashed)
* Minor correction of the timing of Band of Misfits in chapter VII

General
* The whole text is now gender neutral (in line with Empires)
* Fixed graphics of expansion symbols
* All references to other sections include chapter number
* Color coded all Event and Landmark names (see above) throughout document, to separate them from card names

Version 1.0

This is a compilation and a rewriting of all rules from all the rulebooks as well as all online rulings by the game designer. It's complete and up to date, to the best of my ability, as of May 2016, before the release of Empires, the latest expansion.

The aim is a document where you can learn and easily understand how to play Dominion at the same time as everything is included, stated unambiguously, clearly and accurately. (Some rules in official rulebooks have been somewhat unclear, and sometimes superseded by better phrasings in later rulebooks.) I believe this is the only place you can find the complete and correct rules in one place. Also, in this document all official online rulings are presented together with the printed rules seamlessly and in a logical grouping and ordering.

A large part of the document is the Card Reference, where every card is listed alphabetically with explanations of how to use it if there is some part that might be unclear - and of course also including any online rulings made.

This document is largely based on and expanded from the Dominion rules FAQ that I created: http://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Complete_and_All-Encompas...
