Part I: Advanced YB-40 Historical Campaign for B-17:Queen of the Skies

Part II: Advanced YB-40 for B-17:Queen of the Skies.

The YB-40 was introduced in the article Operation Porcupine by C. Posey and G. De Michel a few years ago in The General (Vol. 26 #5). You will need Operation Porcupine if you would like to play the YB-40 Historical Campaign flying a YB-40. In it you will find how to modify your B-17 into a YB-40 and how to use the extra crew man, the Ammunition Stocker.

In YB-40: Bomber Escort you will find a more detailed campaign based on the actual missions flown during the war when the YB-40 was assigned. If you compare the YB-40 Mission List with the list of missions you can find here, you will see that many targets are not listed in the former. The missions and targets in YB-40 are not only for those bomb groups where the YB-40 provided escort, but also other targets which were bombed by groups that could have had one or more Escort Bombers assigned. There were missions flown on other dates during this time period. YB-40 covers only those missions on which YB-40s were assigned, whether they did not take off, aborted or completed the mission.

In YB-40: Escort Bomber Part II you will find almost all targets bombed by the 8th Air Force between May 1st and August 31st 1943, plus a Gazetteer which cover all targets in YB-40 Part II. The weather was not the best during this period so on several missions the secondary target had to be bombed. A few of the targets in the Target List in Part II are secondaries and one or two are Targets of Opportunity. In Part II you will also find more YB-40 tables. For example, Table G-4 Formation Position for the YB-40, and more detailed YB-40 P- and Bl- damage tables. There is also an optional table which decides which group your YB-40 will be assigned to for the mission and a few other new Mission Planning Tables which cover weather, if your YB-40 has Tokyo Tanks and whether or not the mission is affected by 8th and 9th Air Forces other missions or diversions.

If you have Operation Porcupine (The General,Vol. 26 #5) and YB-40: Escort Bomber Part I, everything you need to plan your own YB-40 mission in the world of B-17: Queen of the Skies is here.
Contact me if you would like to have a YB-40 Escort Bomber Campaign Map Board (crude version, made from the original) & a YB-40 Crew Placement Board (if you don't have it already).
