OK, so I found BGG about 21 months ago. Unbelievable joy! And now I've been tracking games for 20 months, for no apparent reason.

So, I will now review what I've done. Tracking the games does provide a nice history, so I can look back and see what happened. I hope you'll enjoy it.

One thing that definitely happened is that I've tried a LOT of new games (as some BGGers have noted). Another is that I've met some great people, both in real life and online!

Feel free to add your own comments or experiences!
============================
Summary as of end-of-Aug/05:
NEW = 116
- of those, BSW + online = 42, where I learned to play there.

FYI - if YOU would like to learn some of these online, just ask, and I'll try to teach.

Dec/03: I had already been introduced to Settlers of Catan, in Oct/02. My wife & I bought the SoC Card Game for each other Dec/02 (we exchanged one copy for the expansions). ie. I was not unfamiliar with Euro games.

But I noticed in the autumn of '03 that a friend of ours had a bunch of other games. I was fortunate enough to borrow the games listed below (under NEW), across about 3 months in late 2003. After trying UP, I went on a hunt for it. Noone locally had it, but my wife found it for sale from FunAgain games. And some BGG thing kept popping up in the searches too!

Union Pacific has become far-and-away one of my wife's favourites, for 2 players. We can usually play twice in about 45 minutes.

NEW (10): Union Pacific, Bohnanza, Elfenland, Canyon, Fossil, Manhattan, Carcassonne, Carc: Inns & Cathedrals, Carc: Traders & Builders, Carc: the river

Jan/04: By now, I had found out that Puerto Rico was the top-rated game around here. At the time, I put a lot of stock in the ratings, and promptly bought it. It has been under-used, without a doubt. Good game, but just not great for my playing situations.

I had done some other reading here, and read about using Rage cards for other games. Given that Rage really needs 4+ players to shine (in my opinion), I figured I'd learn about a few 2-player games. Schotten-Totten & Lost Cities jumped out.

I also had a few gaming nights (one at my place with a friend, Paul, and one at a local church), and got to try out Blokus & Age of Steam.

As well, I got curious and headed back to the store where I'd picked up SoC & SoC card games... and I found Frank's Zoo. I am SO glad I got it, as it has been GREAT for our family!

NEW (5): Puerto Rico, Frank's Zoo, Blokus, Schotten-Totten, Age of Steam

MOST PLAYS:
4 - Schotten-Totten
2 - Blokus, Frank's Zoo

Feb/04: My appetite for new game experiences was now ferocious! I was looking anywhere and everywhere to try to find great games, without much regard yet for if I would ever find a good situation for using it.

In my searching, I found out about BSW (brettspielwelt.de). AWESOME! I also found the rules for E&T, and learned to play it here on BGG -- won my first 3 games, then didn't win for about 17 more...

I also had another gaming get-together, at Paul's house. He'd gotten a few good games for gifts (Age of Steam, La Citta), but didn't have the patience to learn the rules, without proper playing partners. He loaned me La Citta, and I figured it out and then taught him how to play. I must be a good teacher; I finished dead-last out of 5 players!

NEW (10): La Citta, Lost Cities, Sticheln, Euphrates & Tigris (online)
- BSW: Tichu, TransAmerica, Carcassonne Hunters & Gatherers, King Lui, Can't Stop, Attika

PLAYS:
11 - Rage (I play this at work, during lunch, almost daily)
9 - Frank's Zoo
8 - Union Pacific
7 - Puerto Rico, APBA Master Baseball (playoffs)

Mar/04: BSW love-in continued, especially after late-night indoor soccer games, when I was too pumped to sleep. Also, BGG games were now in full-swing too, with more E&T gaming and a little Auf Heller & Pfennig too.

I also made my first and only gaming trade. I had picked up Ultimate Golf at a yard sale, and didn't enjoy the game-play at all. I traded it for Duel of Ages 1: WorldSpanner, which still sits untried. Soon... very soon -- with my son.

May/04: Yard sale yields Master Labyrinth. Another gaming session at Paul's house results in trying 3 new games, with varying results. Subway Toronto is a very good, chaotic game - lots of fun. SharpShooters is ok. Booty is not.

I considered buying the King & Scout carc expansion, but after looking at the Scout tiles at the store, I decline. It didn't grab my attention at all, even for the minimal cost.

Jun/04: Another gaming session (Paul), and some still-underplayed gifts! Empire Builder was the game tried, with 3, and it was good! It was a 2-player race for the last 4 rounds, and I just held on.

I chased after Atlantic Star. I'd heard how it would be a good fit for family gaming, and then the dang thing goes OOP when I go to buy it. I overpaid, I'm sure, but I have it. Stupid collector in me ;-)

July/04: Got invited by some BGGers to play at other online gaming sites. EXCELLENT! Cartagena & Wallenstein remain amongst my favourites.

Canada Day (July 1) festivities brought an opportunity to try Jungle Speed with a FLGS owner.

I also managed to contact someone who owned Pentathlon, to get the rules - YAY! I've had the game for years (got it as a kid), but had long since lost the rulebook and forgotten how to play properly. They have since added those rules to BGG.

Sept/04: Treasure! I found a very kind local gamer (Rob), on BGG (Zithal), who works at my workplace, and owns LOADS of these games -- SWEET! I was able to borrow 2 batches of games, resulting in Traders of Genoa, Aladdin's Dragons, Royal Turf, and Torres. Fell in love with the great components of all 4, but I really like the gameplay of Aladdin's Dragons and Traders of Genoa.

As well, I dusted off my high school French, and signed up on ludagora.net. This resulted in Durch die Wuste (Thru the Desert), Hare & Tortoise, and Vinci all getting tried.

My in-laws also offloaded Rich Uncle onto us. We tried a few times, and then passed it along too.

Dec/04: Christmas, and tons of new games! I bought Ricochet Robot (after borrowing from Rob) & Coloretto & Ants in the Pants for my 3 nephews last year.

By now, I'd dug up O'No 99 from our deck-of-cards bin. My wife said it wasn't good, based on her childhood. After reading the rules, I convinced her otherwise, and I'd been looking since about Sept/04 for a chance to try it. Found it, when my parents came to visit - we like it!

Speaking of my parents, when they ordered Circus Flohcati & Emerald for me for Xmas, they had Galloping Pigs & Niche die Bohne thrown into their order :-) Decent choices, to be sure.

Jan/05: A gaming session at my place on New Year's Day, and I finally get to play Modern Art! Not my favourite, but we had good 4-player fun with it.

Later that week, Christian hosts a game night. There, I got to try Take it Easy, Liar's Dice, and Ticket to Ride. Ticket to Ride was a tough choice; I could've played Taj Mahal instead! But I had a time limit that night (had to pick up my wife at 10:30), and I'd heard really good things about both. TtR was addictive, and by week's end, I was trying it out more on the Days of Wonder website. But that killed my desire for it, as some of the players there were playing more than 1 seat in a game. Good implementation, though!

Another friend hosted his first gaming night in about 2 years. Mostly party games there, and this was no different. I don't like party games much, but it's great to see so many people I know in one place, in a gaming mood (sort of). We played Scene It, and Trivial Pursuit DVD game.

Another church gaming night = Farkel & some Citadels. That was my last visit there, though.

New church (we switched) gaming night wasn't nearly the same. Kids under 7 only, and Pizza Topple was played once before being gnawed on by a 1-year-old. Sigh. Better church for the kids, but in need of better gaming nights -- I may try to hold something during the fall/winter.

NEW (7): Modern Art, Ticket to Ride, Take it Easy, Farkel, Liar's Dice, Scene It, Trivial Pursuit DVD game

Mar/05: My bro-in-law bought a Poker set, and proceeds to teach me & other bro-in-law how Texas hold'em works.

We also go on a family vacation, resulting in evenings spent in the hotel. Hotel is hosting Bingo nights, so my wife drags me & the kids in -- they LOVE it! They also manage to actually WIN a few times, pulling in a few free passes for more tourist things! Too funny, since I'm usually the lucky one.

As well, Paul hosted one more game night... pre-twins! We played Mamma Mia, amongst others.

Curiosity was eating at me about a few others, so I managed to borrow Cosmic Encounter & Tikal (from Rob). My son, Kyle, was just starting to read, and curiosity got the better of him too. I came home from work, and he's asking all about this alien game he sees that I borrowed. I open it up, and he's actually READING the alien race cards, just to figure out what they do! He manages to charm Mom into trying the game, and all 4 of us quite enjoyed the battling and special abilities.

Apr/05: Having owned Odin's Ravens since Jan/05, I finally convince my wonderful wife to give it a try; good back-and-forth game.

Christian hosts another game night, and we play the Bucket King (with sound effects), and Time's Up. Time's Up is long, but a VERY fun party game -- I liked it!

Walking through local Toys 'R Us, we walk past the bargain bin, and I see Star Wars Trading Card Game lying in there. I have no clue if it is any good, but I don't care. For Cdn$2, what have I got to lose? So I convince my wife that we need it, if only just to get my kids primed with the names of the Star Wars characters. Well, the game is actually decent too! As well, we've now seen the 5 movies available on video/DVD. My son is now reading and reading.

About now, I discovered a C64 emulator, and am actively (re)playing Ultima IV, with Ultima V & Bard's Tale downloaded too. This cuts into my online/BSW gaming times.

May/05: Christian is putting together a FunAgain order; I spring for a few games I can't find locally, including Mystery Rummy Jekyll & Hyde.

While the ladies of the house are at Brownie camp, Kyle and I look locally, and find a good deal on Young Jedi collectible card game. We buy the starter sets for 3 -- Jedi Council, Battle of Naboo, and Menace of Darth Maul. Jun/05: Another Star Wars game! I had a friend whom I'd been bugging for almost a year, and he finally remembered to bring it in. My kids enjoyed the ease of reading the colourful cards, and they played it FREQUENTLY over the next 3 weeks.

All of these forum entries on BGG regarding Werewolf finally grab my attention. I join in the original Lord of the Rings bout, and watch as Sauron grabs the ring in last-minute desperation! Good fun, but a LOT of reading to keep up with all the posts.

Our local newspaper carries daily situations at the Bridge table. Every day, there is some tip about bidding or game play. I'd been following along for quite some time (2 years?), and finally decided to try my hand against a beginner PC game. Got my clocked cleaned. Starting to improve as of late-Aug/05, but it's still tough.

NEW (4): Bridge, Star Wars episode I Customizable CG, Werewolf (BGG forums)
- BSW: Ingenious (Einfach Genial)

PLAYS:
15 - UP
9 - Rage
6 - Star Wars Episode I Customizable CG
5 - E&T
3 - Coloretto, Aladdin's Dragons, Odin's Ravens

July/05: Jury duty! Rob loans me El Grande & Big City, so I have something to read during the selection process. I end up as 2nd alternate juror, but in Canadian law, that means I was released as soon as evidence started getting presented (the next day). I bought myself Jambo as a reward for getting through this (and because I was stuck downtown between buses).

My kids really enjoyed Big City, but I eventually started looking for ways to change the base game slightly. I also had to spot the kids a lead.

El Grande took awhile, but I was finally able to play it over extended lunch at work! Well worth the effort; glad I got to try it.

NEW (2): El Grande (finally!), Big City

PLAYS:
14 - UP
10 - Rage
8 - APBA Baseball
7 - E&T
6 - Settlers of Catan card game
5 - Coloretto
4 - Big City, Scrabble

Aug/05: Like Odin's Ravens, it takes me awhile to convince my wife to try Jambo. Eventually, I break down and play it with my curious kids first; they like the crazy animals!

Sister-in-law got Edison for Cdn$3, so she picked it up and gave it to me. My son likes it, but he's about all. The drain covers fall in the holes, and the die-cast pieces are not colour-coded and it can be tough to see which way they are going. The scoring system is also rather unusual; abstract.

On the last day of the month, I finally agreed to play Princes of Florence, since Linnaeus was willing to teach it. I'd been afraid of getting completely confused for quite awhile. Well, he gave some tips, but mostly, he was just patient enough for me to re-read the pre-printed rules (since May/04) from the pile I have here at home... very neat game, and the last of the top-10 that I really care to learn. Not a game I'll likely buy, as it'd be tough to see table-time, but interesting nonetheless!

NEW (5): Jambo, Edison & Co.
- BSW: Princes of Florence (finally!), Verflixxt! (That's Life), Attribute

PLAYS:
12 - UP
8 - Rage
6 - E&T, Jambo, SoC card game
5 - Diamant

=== End of original list ===
FUTURE:
Games still to learn, in the top 50, that I care about:
- Goa (Rob), Taj Mahal (Christian), Samurai (noone :-( )

Others I'd like to learn:
- Balloon Cup, Amun-Re, For Sale, Reef Encounter, Fearsome Floors, Lord of the Rings, Pirate's Cove, Carolus Magnus, Ghost Chase (like Scotland Yard, so I've read - never tried that either!)

Others I OWN, but unplayed:
- Very Clever Pipe Game, Mother Lode of Sticky Gulch, Lowenherz, Duel of Ages: Worldspanner

Sept/05: Curiosity got the better of me this month, so I learned some I had easy access to -- A-MAZE-ing Labyrinth, Pitch, and re-learned Chinese Checkers & Dutch Blitz/Ligretto.

Pitch is in the Hoyle PC card game software, and is also known as High-Low-Jack. The PC plays the 'cutthroat' version (no partnership), and the game just lacked any zip for me with the unusual bidding & scoring mechanics.

A-MAZE-ing Labyrinth was a nice twist of Master Labyrinth. Same base game, but with everyone going after different items; inhibits defensive play, and makes each item worth the same value (instead of 1-20, 25 + up to 3 bonuses). Definitely nicer for young kids to learn and play with friends.

And finally, Duel of Ages. Owned it, unplayed, for almost 2 years, after getting it in a trade in early/04. Some boxes got reshuffled on the shelf at home, and this one made its way up to the top. My son decided it was time, so we cracked it open, set it up, and went over the rules. Eventually, over the span of 10 days or so, we played game 1 (likely 3 - 4 hours elapsed time, in spurts). We adjusted the rules to allow random replacements for dead characters (so we both always had 3 in play), but dead ones still cost your team at game-end (son had 2 dead, I had 1 dead, so I won 1 point there).

NEW (3): Duel of Ages 1:Worldspanner, A-MAZE-ing Labyrinth, Pitch
- BSW: none

PLAYS:
14 - Rage
7 - UP (no pun intended :-) )
6 - E&T
4 - PoF, TA

Oct/05: Got in a few games of Atlantic Star, with 6 -- FINALLY! Bumped the ol' rating up, as it went over VERY well with my folks.

Taught the kids Fearsome Floors (good for Hallowe'en theming), YINSH (got that for Mom's birthday) and Settlers of Catan too. They are on a roll now, and can play a nice variety of games, and be included with (other, non-parent) adults for gaming.

Well, well, well -- and the 6-year-old can play some chess!
1. Beat the old man when I started with no queen
2. had me against the wall and outmanned the next game, with full squads, until he made one late game slip-up
3. Next day, I did the same, outmanning him, but missing one late game ploy -- he jumped in and got me! I NEVER beat my Dad until mid-teens!

The Lowenherz game was an EPIC duel! 3 of us, and each just waiting for the king to die on a particular round. The king hung in 'til the end, and final scores were 54-52(me)-51. I'm glad I finally got to play it, and I look forward to the next opportunity!

Bought a digital camera. Need to buy a new computer now, so I've got a USB port too. I've got a nice picture of Subway Toronto, which I don't own, and I'll submit it for the database when I'm able. I own a few other games with no pics too; I'll obviously add those also.

NEW (3): Fearsome Floors, Mother Lode of Sticky Gulch, Lowenherz
- retry: Atlantic Star, with more than 2
- BSW: none

PLAYS:
15 - Rage
8 - APBA Baseball
7 - Chess (!)
6 - Subway Toronto
5 - E&T

Nov/05: Kids learned about David & Goliath at Sunday school recently, so I'm hoping to play that one soon. (didn't happen in Nov)

Also, played Pickomino, on BSW and Amun-Re, Hoity-Toity, and Reef Encounter on spielbyweb. Nearly played Wimmuln, and still hope to. And maybe Loco -- some might not be until Dec. (No Loco nor Wimmuln in Nov)

Subway Toronto pic is now in the db.

This was a low-play month, as we interrupted it with an AWESOME 7-day trip to Disney in Orlando! I can't say enough about how much fun it was for our family of 4 (kids aged 9 & 6.5)! WOW!

OK, so I'll expand on my Reef Encounter experience. I *love* the fact that spielbyweb gave me the opportunity to try this one, and that it has a 'restart your turn' feature! The rules on spielbyweb, in this case, are awful to learn from (they'll likely improve, as the game is freshly published after testing). But the game itself doesn't help either, as there are too many diverse uses/meanings for similar colours, and too many similar terms for very different game features. Therefore, the learning curve was VERY high. I got myself over the curve, but then just found the game exceedingly mediocre, and lacking in fun. I would think a face-to-face game would have big gaps in-between turns too, so there is no way I'd buy this one. I mean, the game feels like what Loco! sounds like (haven't played it yet), but takes WAAAAY more time to play -- so why would I play Reef Encounter when I could avoid the learning/teaching curve and play Loco instead?!?

NEW (4): Amun-Re, Reef Encounter, Hoity Toity
- BSW: Pickomino

PLAYS: (very low month, for me)
14 - Rage
8 - APBA Baseball (my team fell 1 game short of playoffs)
4 - UP, Reef Encounter
2 - Circus Flohcati

Dec/05: ccmonter came over, and we played Lord of the Rings co-op game. AMAZING artwork and theming! The game itself wasn't too bad, and felt like an RPG experience to me. ccmonter said it was like a slo-mo video game / story, to him. This scenario pictured, Shelob's Lair, lead to the corruption of our 2 poor, weak hobbits (Frodo & Pippin). Luckily, Sam was the ringbearer! My wife managed to get Sam partway thru Mordor, but trying that lonely journey was just too much. We had fun, even though Sauron beat us!

One week later, we got together again. This time, Louis XIV hit the table, and we schmoozed with the influential French courtiers. I tried to take advantage of following the King himself, while Christian focused on the neglected members of the court for easy favours, and he won pretty handily (by 10) over the other 2 of us.

Daughter just got Scooby Doo: Hide & Shriek for a gift. The components are nice, but the game is a bit lacking (for me) as it is really just a spin-and-move; ok game for kids, and my daughter seems to love it.

I expect to try some other games during the holiday season in late Dec. Update: that was Colossal Arena, which I bought for my nephew. Solid hand-management and betting game, with interesting monster powers.

NEW (4): Scooby-Doo Hide & Shriek, Colossal Arena, Louis XIV, Lord of the Rings (co-op)
