'Tis during the long days of summer when a young man's fancy turns to gardening...

Well, truth be told, I was forced. After living in our house for four years my wife finally told me that she wanted it to look nice.

Apparently it's something called "kerb appeal", although I am still not sure what that means as I tend not to hang around on the kerb ourside other peoples houses.

Personally I was quite happy with the status quo. Yes, the front and back gardens were a mess, but that was OK as I didn't use them ever - I would rather stay inside where it is nice and clean and tidy.

I finally bit the bullet though and made an effort - this is the story of what I did in the garden this summer. It has a happy ending.

Now the front of my house has a little patch of ground, about 4m by 4m.

At the start of the year it had 2 fir trees, 4 large bushes a triffid and grass. The sort of grass that big cats hunt gazells in.

Children used to kick footballs into my front garden occasionally and then use a rope tied to whoever drew the short straw so that they could be pulled back to the street if they got lost searching for the ball.

When we bought the house I could swear there was a path at the side through to the back garden.

Then we just had the house bordered by a really big hedge.

It is often said that your garden is like a room outside.

My back garden was like a messy room. There could well have been bears in it.

It was paved and although it is only 4m by 5m some previous owner took it upon themselves to plant a small deciduous forest and a giant redwood in the flower bed. There was also an old shed hiding under next doors overgrown brambles, a rockery in the corner (at least I think it was meant to be a rockery, it could well have just been left over rubble from when the house was built) and the remains of a fence.

My first job was to clear this mess, and over the course of a month or so I made many many trips to the municiple tip.

In all I cleared:
1 garden shed
8 fence panels
2 tonnes of paving slabs
2 tonnes of sand + top soil
And a couple of small patches of woodland which had to be cleared before they found the small family of rare lesser spotted badgers and declared my garden a site of special scientific interest.

Once the site was cleared I was able to start creating.

The front garden was levelled, and after laying a nice membrane to keep the weeds down whilst still allowing drainage, I put down 2 tonnes of pebbles.

They are pink.

My wife ordered them.

It actually looks OK, and the local cats like it because it is like a litter tray that never fills up.

I have now got an electronic motion detector which makes ultrasonic noises whenever a cat passes close. It has scared most of the cats away apart from one persistant begger which I am sure is deaf. I can live with that.

I planted a very few tastefully positioned plants through the gravel - cutting back the membrane to allow me to plant into the soil underneath. There is even a young palm which may even last the winter in our increasingly warm climate.

It looks magic. (sorry).

I got a man in to put some new fencing up at the back. He was very good and did the whole job, labour and materials, for the price of 6 medium weight Euros, 4 larger historical simulations, a couple of party games and 5 cheaper card games for 2 or more players.

I actually paid him in money, but if I still had the cash then the list above is pretty close to what I would have spent it on otherwise.

The new shed is larger and less liable to collapse than the old one. The supplier put it up for me, which was nice.

I am better at destroying things than building them, so it was good that there was someone to make my shed for me. I have put shutters on the window so that it can be secured tightly against anyone wanting my tools.

I love my shed. I am not sure whether this is sad or not, but I just get all emotional thinking about it. It's got shelves and everything in it now. Sigh.

We decided before I started this whole project that the back was going to get a real lawn put down. This week I laid my turf and boy does it feel good.

Although I levelled the ground for what seemed like hours, the new turf still looks like a scale topological map of the himalayas. I don't care though, I can roll it once the turf has rooted properly.

The big question is, what do I do now?

The structure is there, I just need to add in plants and finishing touches at the back.

Remember it isn't a huge space - what would you do with it?

Have you had any fun recently in the garden?

Over to you...

I suggest looking for this game It's a british game, so it will have native plants (for you), and it tells you which plants grow well together, and what other ones are good for. However, i think it was last published in 1987. So goodluck It can be kinda long, but it's neat if you like gardening.

This one fits the bill. As for a garden...hmm my dad has a good one every year, well, except that time I was in charge of it...but we won't go into that.
