Last year my wife was concerned but let me have a birthday gaming weekend for my 40th birthday some of my friends. It turned out to not be so bad as she thought (we were in the game room pretty much the whole weekend so she barely had to see us) and she was ok with another gaming weekend for this year's birthday.

So, I had a couple of friends over and I got in 19 total games myself (they got in a few additional games of Crokinole while I was preparing a couple of the meals, etc)

This list is all of the games that we played!

Soon after Wes and Chris arrived mid-afternoon and we got a couple games of this in needing something short before dinner. First we played the basic version then with some of the more advanced options. Wow, I loved this game - fast and fun! I will be adding it to my wishlist.

Rog. showed up for spaghetti dinner, then Aric and Heather arrived and we started a 6-player game of Power Grid.

Chris had been concerned about having 6 players in the game and how many players would be locked out of the game and how early in. The game moved along pretty quickly and we didn't see any significant lock-outs or people getting behind too much. A couple of interesting things happened, mainly that nearly everyone stuck to top 2/3 of the Germany map.

I started in the lower-middle area and ended up blocking out the bottom 1/3 of the map until Step 2. I held off at 6 for an extra turn to build up money and ultimately was able to end up winning. Wes threatened to come out ahead, but he came up a few electro's short from being able to get enough houses on the board.

I am used to playing this with my kids and I've come up with a method of doing a sort of leader board to keep control of everything and to keep the game moving along.

I tried this with everyone in this game (I've never played with all adults before) and it turned out to be more of a hinderance (sorry guys - didn't mean to be so controlling). I soon realized it was a problem and we distributed each person's own boards in front of them and it went much faster and smoothly.

Aric pulled out a nice win hitting the last 2 corners at near full speed and he finished at least a full 2 turns ahead of 2nd and 3rd place. Chris was in the running except he ran out of wear points and crashed in the 2nd to last corner.

My wife loves this game but she didn't feel up to playing. We had the full complement of 6 which is great for this game.

I ended up with the early lead but Chris passed me near the end. Fortunately, I had 7 extra points from my tavern cards (ironically, 5 of the points came from a draw after he defeated me in battle) which left us in a tie requiring a final battle. I got a couple of lucky rolls and sunk him for the win. ARRRRRRRR!

This ended the first evening of the weekend. Rog then drove back home north as he had a birthday party for his daughter the next day where he was going to GM Dungeons and Dragons.

Wes taught this game to me and my kids after breakfast. He mentioned he'd read this was perhaps the very first tile modern tile laying game. And, it actually was a pretty decent game despite it being a pop-culture themed game. It's actually a pretty nasty game!

Somehow I managed to come out on top despite being far behind early on due to my first bomb blowing up in my hands.

How often can you say a bomb blew you up in a board game, and then you ended up winning!?

This was a fun dice rolling game that I'd never played before. The funny thing about this game is the dice rolling is relatively fast and light, but then you have a lot of tough decisions about which tiles to pick up - well, some are pretty easy/straight forward but some are not, especially the 'hidden' VP point related tiles.

I had heard good things about this game and found I did enjoy it quite a bit. Especially when I got to flush other people's dice in the latrine!

As always this brilliant game is fully engaging. As always, this game is really looooooooong. Especially with 2 of 3 players being newbies. Especially with AP type players like me and Wes who like to take our time making decisions. Even Chris who usually is consistently a pretty fast player was taking a good amount of time to think about his actions because it's (ironically) very hard to play instinctively.

I know that with more experience it can speed up, but this game took a long time.

Early on Wes got a rather large lead over Chris and I. We seemed to get a bunch of nasty cards early on, then realized that pretty much all the cards are nasty. But, they seemed particularly devastating early on. By mid-game I had pretty much all my species out (and a ton were dead). By the end of the game, the board was actually pretty sparse - more than I remember it in other games.

It was a terrific overall battle and I think Chris ended up on top at the end (the difference between 1st and 2nd was only a few points). And I was nearly lapped (or was I lapped? can't remember).

Anyhow, I had a rough patch near the end of the game as I needed to eat, but got some pizza in my stomach and was able to help get the game finished out.

I have decided this game will be strictly reserved for designated game nights or possibly for certain conventions depending on my mood as it is a pretty draining game.

All during DS my son kept coming in and checking on us as he had been waiting to play a game with us as I'd promised. Well, finally after dinner we played his choice.

We all started off killing 1 base each so we kept playing until someone was able to kill of 1 more base for the win. Wes, who had initially been struggling to make shots (it was his first time playing) seemed to figure it out and ended up winning with his bugs.

My daughter wanted to play a game too so I suggested this and she was excited to play as we hadn't played in a while.

Boy, I didn't realize how tough she was on this game blocking both Chris and I pretty hard! I think I went out first and finished with way too many pieces left. Somehow Chris was able to squeeze between her attacks and finished with 1 piece left for the win!

We decided it was time for some good classic games that we all knew.

First up was Big City. With the 3 of us this was perfect as I refuse to play with more than 3 as it gets too chaotic with more.

Chris jumped out to an early lead while Wes and I got mired in placing City Hall and the street cars trying to get bigger scores - but it takes SOOO much time to get those things out in any useful way.

Well, I was nearly able to catch Chris but came up about 10-15 points short.

This is a great game that I never get to play much - in fact I've only played a couple of times 2 player and a couple of times 4 player.

This play reminded me how much I enjoy it. The only problem is we started out scoring incorrectly and had to restart (I don't know why the scoring is so confusing). I need to write a reference sheet for myself to easily remember how the scoring works.

This is a true classic game for us to play. It plays pretty fast, has a lot of indirect interaction and some fun puzzly elements going on. And Wes always seems to win (well most of the time - he lost the last time we played and he was out for vengeance).

This was one of the lowest scoring games I've seen. After the first big scoring Wes and I scored exactly ZERO each and Chris scored a tiny 4 points! I think half of the ships came out in the first 2 rounds.

There were some nasty battles for the start tiles as they were coming up in the expensive spots. I was trying to wait for the price to come down but, no, Chris and Wes spent their VPs to get them...!!

Well, in the end Wes had 1 shipping Viking left to win the 7 points for the bonus and he got the longest Island, thus giving him enough points for the win. NICE!

This is another game that plays better with less people in my opinion - I think I prefer it 2 player as you can strategize a bit more.

This is a classic game for Chris and I to play, usually as the last game of the night. Wes hasn't played a lot but seemed to catch on by mid-game. I LOOOVE this game, but consistently lose. This game was no different with Wes and Chris garnering a ton of bonus multipliers and I had maybe half as many.

Interestingly, I built far less pipes than I usually do (I usually have pipes running everywhere) but it didn't seem to help me as I just couldn't get the tiles with the values I needed to get good multipliers.

Chris came out with 85 points and Wes was close behind with 69. I ended up in the 50's. BUT, I had a great time as usual anyhow!

Chris was still sleeping the next morning so Wes and I sat down for a game. I suggested Manhattan but he wanted to play with 3 (instead of 2 as he normally played) so he suggested Aton and I said 'sure!' as I never get to play it. In fact, it was so long I had to re-read the rules completely.

The first game I somehow totally stomped Wes by the middle of round 2 (a couple of lucky card draws helped). But then the next game was a lot closer. I came out slightly behind after 2 rounds so I decided to try for the all green strategy for the win (as I had all 4 in temple 2 and found I could get into temple 4 easily right after the scoring round). Well, it's very difficult to accomplish an all-green win and Wes won by getting significant scoring on the next round.

I think this game is under-appreciated and needs to see some more table time!

Once Chris was up and going we got this to the table. Unfortunately, Chris seems to not care for it much so he kept making little comments about it although he couldn't pinpoint why he didn't like it. I definitely liked it. Not LOVED it but definitely enjoyed our play and would be willing to play again.

I fought to get the tallest tower early on and got the 3 points for that during every round except the last and managed to barely stay ahead of Wes until he passed me on the 2nd to last round. However, I was able to cut down on Wes's propagation across the board and was able to come back over the top for the win.

I have this game on order and was interested in learning how to play. I've heard polarizing reviews on this, some love it, some hate it. I had read the rules once and found it to sound very abstract.

Well, it indeed ended up being very abstract. My expectations had been somewhat lowered by the negative reviews, but in playing it I found I really loved playing it and I'm very happy my copy is en-route!

The only problem is - I just KNOW that Donald X. has some expansions up his sleeve for this game so I wonder now how much I've committed myself to buying expansions in the future.

I had waxed my board in anticipation of this weekend and set it up lovingly in the family room. Unfortunately, I had not once gotten to play a game of it or even flicked a disc the entire weekend.

So, I wanted to get a game in. We enlisted my 8-year old son, Jacob, to play and he teamed up with Chris (who is likely the most experienced player of the bunch).

Chris, of course, was making consistently great shots and several holes. And, Jacob started making some pretty dang good shots himself. In fact, everyone was making good shots and it turned into a very competitive game with Chris & Jacob jumping out to an early lead, then Wes and I winning a couple of rounds, the Chris and Jacob jumping up to 90 points to our 50 points (racing to 100).

Well, Wes and I were able to keep them off the board in the final round and walked away with a solid come-from-behind win.

I LOOOVE this game. No really, I do. And not because I won the last time we played. And not because I ended up winning this game. It's because there are so many possible paths to victory with lots of interesting decisions to make. You roll dice but nearly everything you have access to is good or can be manipulated to be good or better. There's some light indirect interaction as well.

This is a solid game and I'm very glad my wife got me my own copy for Christmas. Woo-hoo!

Finally, it was getting late but we had one time for one more game before Chris and Wes had to head out. My wife and daughter were out of the house so we pulled Jacob into a game of 7 Wonders with us. He's played once before but Wes hasn't played before.

Wes had brought me the 7 Wonders: Leaders expansion (which actually is 42 leaders, some 6 coin chits, and a new civilization board) and we used that as well for this game.

I have to say I like the leaders as it gives you some additional interesting options (and a bit more money at the beginning depending on how you use it). I think they aren't significantly game changing, but they can also help in several different ways including in building your Wonder which is a nice option.

Wes came out on top monopolizing the science symbols (I really should have been putting some of them down myself) and I finished dead last (which Jacob was very proud of beating me by 2 points)
