A cronicle of the first official meeting of the Games Club of Maryland's (GCOM) Annapolis location. There were 22 in attendance, only 6 of whom were repeats from last month's meeting. I'd guess that about 8 of us were gamers, the rest were new to the hobby.

Here is a link to the web page with directions, dates of our future meetings etc:

http://www.gamesclubofmd.org/locations.asp?location=26

Here is a link to the report from last month (our first "unofficial" meeting):

See you all October 22!

Ruth, Ginna and I arrived early to set up and played a quick game of Pickamino while we were waiting for others to arrive.

Kevin McPartland arrived next with his pre-production copy of CoP. Gordon arrived and then he, Ginna and I sat down with Kevin for a 4-player game of this yet-unpublished exploration and conquest game.

A few minutes later, Games club of Maryland member: Josh arrived with three large bins of games and two friends: Doug and Chad. They picked out “Tower of Babel” and my “non-gamer wife” (this title is getting less and less credible) sat down and taught THEM how to play it.

In the mean time, Wendi (a reporter from the Annapolis Capital, who came to cover the event), her husband, Tod and their three children Summerleigh, Montana and Phoenix arrived. The “Tres Amigos” (Josh, Doug and Chad) set up a 5-player game of PR which Montana and Phoenix joined. Josh reported later that Phoenix and Montana had done quite well in a close game.

Ruth’s second game was the one that she freely declares is her favorite: Dragonland (she likes the pretty gems). Tod and Summerleigh joined her. Summerleigh (a pre-teen girl) won by 1 point (she likes the pretty gems too)! Tod was quick to catch on and really enjoyed it as well. He didn't mention the gems.

In the bustle that followed, Richard and Kelly showed up and went straight for SoC (which they had enjoyed so much the previous week). Ginna excused herself from our game of Conquest of Paradise and joined them along with two other new arrivers: Jim and Danny. Jim was King Aurthur and also the traitor! He was revealed by the first accusation and spent the rest of the game relishing his role… “playing” taps as each character died off. You can guess who won!

Steve and Nora showed up with more games and quickly started a 5 player game of TTR:Europe with new arrivers Bob, James and Mary. Bob, entirely new to Eurogames, won, and attributed it to the fact that he is widely traveled.

Steve and Nora then led another group in a game of “That’s Life” which the reporter from the Annapolis Capital Newspaper (Wendi) won! Up to that time she had been busy conducting interviews, taking photos and basically doing her “reporter stuff”. I’ll let you all know here when the article is due to appear in the paper.

Ruth continued to play with Tod and Summerleigh, and I believe was joined by a few others for a game of Fluxx, which Steve had suggested as appropriate for newbies and children. Not sure who won, but Ruth really liked it.

As the crowd began to thin, Ginna, Ruth and Gordon sat down for a game of this “Carcasonne” spin-off. Gordon had never played this version before and commented that he thought it was the best Carc he has played.

I spent most of the evening (between turns of CoP) being the host: getting games started, being interviewed for the Newspaper article, working on the food order, coaching the SoC table (etc.), so I really wasn’t free to enjoy myself in an undistracted manner until later.

My last game of the evening was with the “Tres Amigos”. A rousing play of the betting game Manila. What a great bunch of guys! We had a good old time, betting and throwing dice. Josh got lucky with the pirate at least twice (actually I think it may have been three times) and won by a massive amount. At the end of the game, he had over twice the money of the three other players combined.

One round, none of the three punts made it successfully to harbor... We all agreed that it must have been the result of a government crackdown on smuggling (you know, black helicopters, speed boats... etc.)
