Hello all!

OK, this is going to be one of those "Direct me fellow gamers" kinda threads. Basically, I've been amassing quite a solid little group of games, but I find that there's one category that I've unintentionally ignored--wargaming. My Euro-game selection is nice and we have been playing those for the most part, but I'd like to mix it up a bit.

This was all sparked when I read Emile's "Wheat/Chaff" list (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...) and started thinking that it might be time to toss a few into the mix.

Now, I'll be honest. There's NO way that I could field a wargame that'd take 6+ hours. However, I do think that my group could handle a 2-4 hour game. The second problem is that while my group weekly swings between 3 and 6 members, a two-player game probably wouldn't make the table unless I had multiple 2-player games (I'd have to have someone else teach the second one). Don't let this keep you from putting the best 2-player games up on the list since I'm positively drooling for Hammer of the Scots.

I'll start with one of the games that I'd like to field and see what kind of response I get. One quick note: Yes, I can read ratings like everyone else and I can get a general idea about which games rock, but I'd rather hear some "experienced" views directly from you.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to fill me in on the best games.

OK, OK. Don't kill me. This is the one wargame that I have that I'm hoping to field. I think it's the perfect blend between the Euro-game and a wargame.

Though it only handles four players, this one is a superb wargame. It really does have it's roots in old-school wargames, too. It has a detailed map of europe, movement limits, a few fiddly dip-lomatic factors, supply chains to consider... the sorts of details that make a wargame really have the feel of the period.

But a few elegent "eurogame" twists speeds up the game tremendously and makes it fresh and fun. Battles are resolved via a deck of cards, and you are limited to what suits you play by the location of the armies. Also the supply chain is a simple slower pawn that connects the army to the supplies. And the fact that army size and the cards in your hand a are secret creates hidden factors that add great tension.

Needless to say I'm chomping at the bit to play this one more.

Despite the ratings, Wallenstein isn't the perfect Euro-Wargame hybrid - it's THIS!! Well first off, cause this can more properly be called a wargame, even though its rules aren't very complicated at all. Wallenstein is more of a Euro with a war theme pasted on. By all means get Wally, but as a fellow Euro gamer who is just starting to want to make the transition into war games, this is the better choice if there had to be a choice involved - it is deeper, more so a war game, and even has simpler rules!

Check this one out too... I haven't played it yet (am dying to and probably will in the next two weeks) but from looking at the game and reading the rules as well as reviews here on the geek this one might be what you're looking for, with the caveat that it is a 2 player game only. It plays in around 2 hours, has elegant and relatively simple rules, and beautiful components (the pictures here don't do it justice, and also note the map isn't actually white but a faint green). You can pick this and Friedrich up from the same store as a package deal (at simmonsgames.com)

This is nearly the perfect multiplayer political/war game. Handles 4-6 players. You don't have to worry about fussy maps and income, and each faction has great special powers. A masterpiece from the legendary Eon Games group.

Most importantly, the rules have very specific ways that handle alliances that rein in the metagaming that ruins most empire-type games.

It's not as hard to find as you may think, either. It was printed in huge quantities when the book was popular, and again when the movie was released.

This may be a bit lighter than what you are looking for, but its is a great wargame with an interesting yet simple combat system which works best with 5 players. We can normally finish it in 2 hrs- and anyway you can play to a time limit if time is an issue.

Struggle of Empires, while not a True Wargame IMO, is a great War-ish Game. Area Influence you have to Fight For! Absolutley B-E-A-utiful Counters, with an Interesting Alliance Mechanic, and "Euro" Type Turn rules. I recommend this game Completely. Also, works with up to 7, although I would recommend an Even amount of Players.

I am always up for A Game of...A Game of Thrones. robot Another "Waro", this takes the same view of combat as LotR: TC did. Cards. And while battling for control of the Land, with sea movement and mustering and the like, it is very "Euro", (Look...Meeples! meeple ) FF quality components, hard decisions, bidding, and sometimes having to work together, I would say this game is for you. Also it works with up to 5, which is best, but can be played with 4. NO LESS! This game is actually very close in mechanic with Wallenstien. But instead of putting the Countries on the Orders, you put the Orders on the Countries (well just Areas really.)

Some of the CDwGs are great, try this one. It's aproachable as far as complexity for a wargamer newbie goes and it can play with 4.

I'm an "old-schooler" I guess, but recently have cultivated an appreciated for several "lighter" titles. This one seems to fit in with your requirements, some euro characteristics, but can definitely play like a wargame. Very intriguing, great designer, beautiful components. However, a long playing time. Also plays better with multiple players, from what I gather.
