... if they overheard you telling about it.

Since I do like games a lot, I tend to talk about games too (and yes sometimes I get 'caught' surfing the BGG website). The looks on peoples faces can get from mildly interested (they want to share their thoughts on Monopoly or Risk) to frightened, bewildered or horrified, once they realise that there are some 20000 games out there, and you'd love to discuss and play at least 10000 of them

From the corner of my eye I see someone grabbing his mobile, and I can understand one word he's whispering: 'madhouse'...

Feel free to add form your own experience.

The game that inspired me to write up this (very short) list. A non-gaming collegue of mine overheard my conversation with a gaming collegue about this game. The non-gaming collegue always thought of me as a bit strange, but this definitely proved it. 'It's about buying, selling, planting and harvesting beans. Think of it as an extended trading phase in settlers of Catan'. Even the gaming collegue didn't buy it at that time

Power Grid. Now there's a title that no-one will remember! I prefer to talk about Funkenschlag (I like the German sound of that), but people here don't like Germans a lot, and they are really not into the boring picture on the box of a scientist in the mid-50's of last decade. Talking about it is a guaranteed 'putting people to sleep tale'

'You know, you have these power plant auctions, and then you have to buy fuel to power them, and then you connect some cities and provide energy to them. Sometimes the fuel market is stuffed with oil that you don't need, and sometimes you have to pay an arm and a leg for a barrel.'

Boring! Next!

This one takes place in the 17th century, you're a trader and you go overseas to get spices and all.

You'd think that would attract an average Dutch guy with the history of the VOC! But no.

Building railroads from Amsterdam to Brussels or from Smyrna to Pamplona. Really fun, and easy too.

(strange look: why would I want to do that?)

This is the last one I get to mention before they finally take me away, and I'm just a scream that rapidly vanishes.

'Pastel camels. How cool is that?'

You see, it's like you're the leader of an expedition.

Unhunh.

And there are all of these carboard squares that stack on top of one another that form the temples that you discover still buried in the jungle.

Oh really.

Yeah. And you put down the big hex-shaped tiles so that there are little rocks that line up that you hop from one tile to the next.

Hopping...right.

You try to collect these little artifacts from the treasure mounds and sometimes you even get to trade artifacts with another player...even if they don't want to.
But the best part...

I can't wait to hear it.

The best part is when you get to build a new base camp in the sweetest spot on the board that allows you to use a secret passage that nobody else can. That let's your guys pop right up behind the volcano and everybody else would have to pay so much to get there it's hardly worth it.

Okey-dokie then...hey...I'm going to make a little call here and we can talk some more while we wait.

Great. You know, this is one of three games. Yeah, I know. I can't believe it either. In another you hold these festivals and the other you get to float down canals and build districts while collecting Capuli tiles... Yeah. Cool hunh?

Card games tend to be acceptable game topics but you really start to see their eyes roll up in their head when you start talking about how the magic clouds, the trollwagon, the elfcycle, and of course, the giant pig come into play when journeying between villages.

After hearing an arguement that takes up half an hour to resolve. The arguements of which don't make any since. "No! it's +4,-3,*-1*! you can't declare assualt movement in wadis during a full moon!" (Ok that's a little bit off, not not a whole lot).

So your trying to influence the court of Louis the XIV so you can get little pieces that help you complete missions. trying to explain this to my friends first always gets a smirk then a laugh and then if i can get them to play they spend the whole time making fun of it. i love the game, so i guess im just going to have to find new freinds.

I quite like this simple game, but when trying to play it with non-gamers they always end up confused.

Me: "Okay, this is a game where you have to get to the secret temple in the jungle. You are one of these characters; the hunter, the indian chief, the geologist ..."

Them: "... I wanna be the hunter!"

Me: "No no, you don't choose one. Each get a secret role and the great thing is that no matter how many players we are, all the roles are in the game!"

Them: "Why? Nobody's gonna move them."

Me: "Yes they are. 'Cause you have to bluff in order not to show who you are. And if you land a character on a hex that matches it's colour you get to discard an extra card."

Them: "Why should I do that?"

And on and on we go. For a simple game it's proven to be quite har to explain to children and newbies. But somehow I often end up loosing anyways.

Well, you can evolve your amoebas and make them more fit to survive with these cards - see, they have cute pictures on them.

Well, in order to survive you have to eat the other amoeba's poop - but they're really just little wooden blocks!
