I am not going to profess to be a boardgaming expert. I am not going to sit here and list qualifications for why I should make you all believe me. I am an AVERAGE boardgamer. I have a decent sized collection of about 50 that covers a wide variety of game types.

Time after time whenever Puerto Rico gets into a list I see people comment that, although it is good, it should NOT be the #1 game on the geek. This baffles me as of all the games I have played this one qualifies more than any other. It is that excellent next step from a gateway game, allows for constant play (little down time), is complex without being OVERLY complex, plays in about the perfect amount of time, allows for a good sized average gaming group, and also allows for social interaction. I am not going to get into the mathematics of all this as boardgaming is NOT just about mechanics, but you also have to mix in theme and social aspects to make an overall well rounded and good game.

So tell me... What SHOULD be #1?

It is my belief that PR is where it should be.

Maybe we break all the cardinal rules of being a true Board Game Geek but we actually DISCUSS decisions after they are committed to by a player. This more than qualifies for satisfying the social aspect that I enjoy about gaming. So many people call it multi-player solitaire, but I argue it is because that is 4 people sitting around the table determined to do one thing only and that is WIN at any expense. So they sit in silence. I do not believe this is the average gamer.

Game time is perfect for an evening session. A couple of hours is about right in my opinion - lets parents not be gone TOO long from kids, for those not tied down it allows for other activities are even a second game.

Although not something you pull out on a first time gamer it is complex enough to always teach you something new every time the average gamer sits down to play.

I have not played every game in existance but I have played most of the top contenders here on the geek, and I still can't come up with one that qualifies more.

I honestly believe this should be the #1 game. Tastes obviously vary, and no one game can be #1 to everyone (this isn't my FAVORITE game), but this game is SO good and SO pure and has been around for SO long that I think it deserves the #1 spot until a game that has lasted longer than 50 years (or, say, 20...were any of the games ranked higher than it around in 1985?) comes along to take its place.

Well, I'll put in a word for the 2nd most obvious candidate. Its just as short, but involves more player interaction and isn't as hosed by different ability players on the same table. Best of all, it plays just fine with 2,3 or 4, so provided you have enough sets, you can play it with any number of people. I would also call it elegant.

Of course, I haven't played Puerto Rico enough really. Or this enough (which is why Junta is still my favorite game- it just needs at least 5 players...)

For me the choice is clear.

Over the years Simon has become something more to me than just a technologically advanced game. Simon has become a friend.

When my first wife left me, she took the furniture, the cats, our 8-track player with the Leo Sayer Best Of, the rabbit ears and the Beta Player. All that was left were my clothes piled in a heap, filling the corner of my room, and there in the center, alone on the hardwood floor -- Simon.

Simon has been with me where ever I go. He is a loyal, constant companion. Sure, at times he can be demanding, but we all have needs. Sometimes, he needs Red, Red, Blue, Yellow, Red. But I understand. He gives back whatever he takes, and then some, perhaps he will add a Green.

Now, I'm on my 4th wife and Simon has never left me. Never. He was there on my wedding nights, and honeymoons. He never got jealous, not like them.

Yes, Simon will always be #1.

I demand it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I got into the boardgame hobby because of this game. I picked it up at a Christmas closeout and finally convinced some friends and family to play it on New Year's Eve at about 9:00 p.m. We didn't go to bed until 5:00 a.m. the next morning.

I brought this game to the Florida Keys on vacation just a couple of months ago. The friends I rented the house with had never played Settlers and honestly, had never played boardgames other than the mainstream ones. They begrudgingly agreed to play Settlers. After that first game, it didn't leave the kitchen table for the rest of the week. When I had to leave midweek to head back home, my friends asked if they could keep the game for the rest of the week and mail it back to me. Another offered to buy it from me on the spot.

If we all can remember how great this game was when we first played it, then this game is #1. Some claim that it bores them, but that is only because they've played it so much!

This should be #1. You can influence your neighbors, but not as severely as in PR. Thus, one player cannot turn the balance to another (or against) with as much ease. However, with more balanced players in PR, this problem is admittedly diminished.

200 million copies sold worldwide.
500 million people have played.
Sold in 80 countries at major retail outlets.
Translated into 26 different languages.
50 billion dollars in Monopoly money printed each year.
70 years old and still going strong.

It's the best selling baordgame in the history of the world.

Those are cold hard objective facts.

So until the game you'd like to be #1 matches the numbers above, you'll never be able to claim that the game you're pushing is better than Monopoly.
