With the 1st anniversary of BoardGameSpeak just past, it's a good time to offer up a list of game designers that would be an interesting listen on BGS. I'm certain Aldie and Derk have a list of who they'd like to have on the show but it won't hurt to have the community lend its voice to the matter.

Please comment on the designer(s) you'd like to hear most or add them if they are not yet on the list.

Aldie & Derk...Great job on BoardGameSpeak! You've encountered a few bumps along the way but the show continues to improve over time. Keep it fun, light-hearted and irreverent. Stay focused on the board gaming world and add a little edginess every now and then. Hold to this and BGS will be popular for a long time to come!

Credits include: Wallenstein, Alhambra, Showmanager, Atlantic Star, Metro, Stimmt So!

Wallenstein is an interesting blend of mechanics that work surprisingly well to evoke the theme and create a game with a lot of tension and little down time. I would love to hear the story behind this game. What sparked the idea? What caused you to pick these mechanics? Were other mechanics considered and discarded? Perhaps Derk and Dirk could discuss at length the difference in how their names are spelled and the significance of this!

Richard Borg

Credits include: Battle Cry, Memoir '44, Liar's Dice, Wyatt Earp, Hera and Zeus and the soon to be released Commands and Colors: Ancients

The Commands and Colors engine that is the basis for Battle Cry, Memoir '44 and Commands and Colors: Ancients is what I'd like most to hear about. The subject matter for Battle Cry and Memoir '44 were popular enough to be published by a larger company. However, I get the impression that Ancients may have been first but has taken a longer path to the market. What's the story? Which game came first? Was the underlying game engine designed and then themes applied or a game designed and then evolved into other time periods and styles of battle?

Mark Herman

Credits include: We the People, For the People, SPQR, Pacific War, Empire of the Sun

In 1994, Avalon Hill released a game by Mark called We The People. This was the first of what has become known as 'card driven war games.' Reducing complexity yet retaining the historical flavor of the time period, these games played in a matter of a few hours rather than running into multiple sessions of many hours. I would like to hear Mark's perspective on what it feels like to bring a new style of play to a genre and the influence it has had. When will we hear more about Washington's War? Is it a retooling of We the People or something new?

Another set of innovators in the war gaming genre. Their system uses small wooden blocks to represent units. With the information for your units only on the side facing you, a nice 'fog of war' is created. The use of blocks also allow you to keep track of up to four levels of unit strength rather than two with traditional counters. What sparked the idea to use blocks? Have you played Europe Engulfed? How does it compare to the Front series? What time period are you taking your blocks to next? Will we ever see a WWI block game?

Wolfgang Kramer and Richard Ulrich

Credits include: The Princes of Florence, El Grande, El Caballero, Die Händler

El Grande is the grandaddy of area control games and continues to hang out at #5 in the list of top rated games. In the 90's if it wasn't Settlers, then it's very likely that El Grande was the game that hooked you on euro-style board games. If interviewing both Kramer and Ulrich, this can stay focused on their collaborative efforts. Top notch to be sure. But if it's Kramer alone, the horizon opens up to a tremendous amount of material. He is prolific yet produces quality games time and again whether he is working solo or collaborating with another designer. This should be a Knizia-esque interview with a discussion about his approach to the creative process of game design, work ethic and his perspective on the board game industry.

Angelo Porazzi would make a great guest. Hugely energetic and great fun, he speaks excellent English but hears English strangely! When he speaks, you think he's a natural English speaker, but as soon as you start talking to him, he goes "Slowly slowly I don't undertsand!" He'd be very entertaining and could explain about the gaming scene in Italy very well.

That's him in the middle. Dunno who the others are.

I'm stunned this list has gone this far without the mighty Rudiger Dorn! Traders of Genoa, Louis XIV, Jambo and Goa have made the man immortal in the game designer world. I personally would love to hear about Goa's design, about controlling the negotiations in TOG, and also to find out if he's really related to Worf (okay, not actually interested in that last bit - I don't even like Star Trek).

This one seems almost ridiculously obvious and yet he's not on the list: Andreas Seyfarth. Puerto Rico still hangs out atop the game-ratings list after many pretenders to the throne have failed to unseat it. Does he have comments on this honor? Who wouldn't love to hear about his thoughts on PR/SJ strategy, more discussion on the underrated Manhattan and how he may have single-handedly driven up the price of Outpost by suggesting it is a good game and not just the precursor to a great one...

Serge Laget (Shadows of Camelot, Mystery of the Abbey, Mare Nostrum)

Each of his games listed here employs different gameplay mechanics, whereas many designers re-use elements of previous games. Would be curious to hear his thoughts on the challenges involved in not repeating yourself, on working with Bruno Faidutti, and on the creative process involved to create Mare Nostrum. Apparently it took 20 years to create, what were the pitfalls along the way, and how were they overcome in the end.
