This is somewhat related to my previous list (Games that Handle 2-player by Having Each Person Play 2 Colors).

This really has nothing to do with gameplay and probably doesn’t matter at all to most people. However, I’m always disappointed if I open a new game and find out I can’t play yellow.

Some games use fewer pieces when there are more people playing, and so they include different numbers of pieces for different colors. That means you might not get to pick your favorite color, even when the game has pieces of that color. Those pieces just sit in the box tormenting you!

This doesn’t just affect playing with two, but the 2-player game is generally the most limiting.

Please add to this list.

Also, check out this list by Caleb N. Diffell (cnd_77). “The Scaling Factor #3: Number of Pieces”.

This game uses fewer and fewer pawns per player as the number of players increases. The number of pawns you get ranges from 6 to just 2. Here’s the color breakdown in the version we have, which matches the one pictured.

2 players: use red and blue with 6 pawns each.
3 players: add turquoise, and use 5 pawns each. (Turquoise?! That’s practically blue. I have no idea why this is the first added color.)
4 players: yellow finally comes into play. Each player gets 4 pawns.
5 players: add black, and use 3 pawns each.
6 -8 players: 2 pawns each of any color (red, blue, turquoise, yellow, black, white, purple, green).

We have the pictured version, which is called Domination.

2 players: 18 pieces each in red and green.
3 players: 13 pieces each. (The rules say to use red, green, and blue, but forget that – there are 13 yellow pieces!)
4 players: 13 each in all 4 colors (red, green, blue, yellow).

I have no problem with this game, as it allows me to play yellow even with only 2 players. Not only that, but the yellow pieces are even the best looking, including a really cute little dog. If black, white, or purple is your usual pick, however, you’ll need at least 5 players.

2-4 players: each takes 4 pawns in either yellow, blue, green, or red.
5-7 players: each takes 3 pawns in any color (yellow, blue, green, red, black, white, purple.)

This one is an expansion, which lets you expands the number of players from 3-5 to 2-6. In the base game, you do get to pick your color. Although sadly, yellow is not one of them. Blue is understandably absent, as the board pieces are blue.

2 players: each takes 2 boats in either red or white. (The white may or may not match the white from your base game.)
3 – 5 players: use the base game (1 boat each in your choice of white, red, green, brown, grey.)
6 players: each player gets 1 boat. Note that if your 2 white boats are the same shade (rather than one very white and one kind of cream colored) then you now have 2 players using white. You have to use the stickers on them, labeled A and B, to tell which boat is which.

Metro! The color choices are totally dictated to you. Only blue & orange have enough station markers to play 2p. Next color (I think it was yellow) has exactly enough to play 3p. So on for 4p, 5p, 6p.

Argh!

Two players can only choose from Asia, Crete and Thrace.
Three players get Asia, Crete, Thrace, Illyria and Italy.
Four players get Asia, Assyria, Babylon, Crete and Thrace.
Five players get Africa, Asia, Assyria, Babylon, Crete, Egypt and Thrace.
Six/Seven players get Africa, Asia, Assyria, Babylon, Crete, Egypt, Illyria, Italy and Thrace.

As a player who enjoys playing as Italy it kinda limits me.

But still, the idea is to stop people from being too spread out and to encourage action and conflict within an area that isn't too far-reaching.
A good idea.

The number of players determine which colours you can use.

Also, the colour that each play controls is determined randomly after the set-up stage.
