I, like many others I'm sure, happened across this site purely by luck of a google search.

What was the game that you were searching for more information about that led you to the Geek?

I stumbled across my old copy of Fortress America while helping my Mom do some cleaning and much to my dismay, the rulebook was no longer present. In my quest to find a scanned copy and battle for a future America, I happened across the beauty that is BGG. Now it seems to appear in my browser a few times every day.

Wanted to find out more Star Wars games that were as fun as Epic Duels. Found out about "Queen's Gambit". Did another search. Led me here.

Ironically, the game sold out before I could buy a copy online, it wasn't until two weeks ago that I actually got a copy. (Forty+ game purchases later, of course!)

The guy that showed our group how to play PR also played with us weekly and beat us handily. He'd never divulge strategy, so I searched for "puerto rico strategy" on Google and it led me here. I beat him the next two games after reading
The Large Warehouse of Puerto Rico Knowledge.

Actually, it kind of ruined the game for me.

My wife wanted to start a family game night, and I wanted to get some more 'grown up' games we could play to spend time together, and keep the grey matter from fossilizing.

I was actually looking for a good deal on Axis&Allies (the only 'adult' game I could think of off hand at the time) when I saw a listing for Carcassonne, and didn't have any idea what it was. So I went to google, google sent me here, and suddenly I see that not only are there good games for mentally competent adults, but that there are hundreds of them in all kinds of genres.

BGG has led me to savagely brutalize my bank account, but has brought a great deal of enjoyment back into our home.

I used to play tons of war/board games as a kid 20 years ago, include the 1977 version of War of the Ring. After the recent movies came out, and my daughter (9) read the books, I had a hankering to re-live my days of playing War of the Ring, but knew that my daughter wouldn't be up to the 1977 version due to its complexity (if I could find it in my Mom's attic). So I started to search to see if any new boardgames had come out that would satisfy my itch, and I was amazed to to find this game. In the process I found BGG as well.

Now, about $1000 later in games, I'm an addict once again, and finding my kids are getting addicted as well. Every game I have bought has been what I expected thanks to BGG. As a kid I went and bought whatever looked interesting based on the outside of the box, and wound up with lemons an awful lot (although also some gems like Squad Leader, War of the Rings, etc).

The first serious game (i.e., read not Monopoly, Risk, or Mille Bornes) that led me down the eventual path of geekdom was Squad Leader on middle school afternoons at a friend’s house.

10 years later I caught the gaming bug again after playing Dune, and went to eBay to look for this one and others I had played in my youth (e.g., Kingmaker, Starship Troopers, Rail Baron, Feudal, etc.).

A few years later, again, after looking for a variety of new games and purchasing Carcassone in my FLGS, I was turned on to BGG. So, technically Carcassone brought me into the BGG fold.

Now, after buying a few games that largely sit on a shelf, I have to limit my game purchases. I have a hard time convincing people that the games they have never heard of are worth playing, even if they have to listen for ten minutes to learn a new set of rules. Sometimes, I can convince my girlfriend, but this limits me to two player games and keeps me from purchasing of my desired games (e.g., Power Grid, PR, RoboRally, T&E, etc.).

Sky Galleons of Mars.

It's a fuzzier memory than it should be, but...

I attended the Dragonflight Game Con in Seattle a few years back, and happened to get a chance to play Sky Galleons of Mars - essentially the minis game for an RPG "Space: 1899". The fella running the game had some sweet terrain and very well painted ships. Fun game - and I loved the minis and the theme.

After the game we started to discuss other boardgames and minis games folks were playing. At one point (and I wish I could remember the guys name) he said "...have you seen this website - it's all about boardgames".

Since then, I log on to BGG almost daily - and have added around 60-70 games to my collection.

I can't remember if this is THE game that washed me up to the calm shores of the Geek, but I know this was the first game that got me interested in Euro-games. Up until then, I had been trying to collect all of the Cheapass games, as well as other envelope games (Alien Menace and that ilk), and doing research into all of those games brought me here.

At the time, I was impressed with the idea of a cooperative game, while at the same time shocked at the price of the game. Now, the idea of cooperative games turns me off of playing them, and the cost of the games are only MILDLY prohibitive....

I had sold my complete second edition (except for the Dragons expansion) Talisman set on Ebay in order to buy a PlayStation 2 on its launch day back in 2000. So, fast forward to 2003 and now I have seller's remorse (which I actually had from the moment i shipped Talisman out to the auction winner) and now I am trying desperately to find Talisman (with all the same expansions I had before) without paying the painful Ebay costs. My search led me here to BGG. I finally purchased a duplicate of my Talisman set last year from an Ebay seller who was willing to take some trades to offset the cost, but even better was my finding of The Geek. This place and its denizens have turned me on to so many good games that I never would've heard of/looked twice at before. Plus, I have made a few excellent trades here and avoided Ebay altogether!

I was looking for games that you can learn more about business and investing.

This game is actually more like a puzzle. You have to solve it and the solution is worth the $150 price tag.

Found Puerto Rico and Traders of Genoa which eventually became a geeklist. However some BGG members were very offended by the list and accused me of being some cult/scam leader.
