For a time, Settlers was played so frequently in my gaming group that the group evolved a formalized set of rules for determining where the robber would be placed when a seven ws rolled.

These rules are now so much a part of the game that they are always included when teaching new players.

So, these our our rules. What are yours?

1. Who's winning?

I would guess that most gamers utilize this rule, and not just in Settlers.

4. Who's named Kevin?

I have personally never believed this rule made any sense. I always felt that "Who's named Andrew?" would have been a much better rule, and I have tried my best to get our group to substitute that rule instead. I certainly use it. But I have never fully swayed the rest of the group. Andrew, in particular, seems especially resistant. It's an ongoing debate.

If you're feeling friendly - where it will directly impact no one.

Some people add an optional rule where either:
1. You can't use the robber against a player with fewer than 4 VPs.
2. You can't use the robber at all until everyone has reach 4 VPs.

Whoever offers a good bribe can avoid the robber on their spaces.

This involves giving cards to the person who has roleld a seven. The robber will then be placed on someone else. I never liked this rule, but some of the people we played with swore by it.

I prefer the NTRR variant. Speeds up the game, eliminates kingmaking and rules out the poor placement of the robber. If my group would play this everytime I would be pleased.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settlers_of_Catan,_Variants

No Trading (NT). No domestic trading among players is allowed. Players may still use theirs ports and the bank for maritime trades.

No Trading, Reverse Robbing (NTRR). NT rules apply. Furthermore, when rolling a 7 or playing a Soldier, a player must place the Robber on an unowned hex or one that belongs to him alone. If that is not possible, then the Robber must go on one of the player's shared hexes, and a legal steal is permitted.

The Werewolf method. Whenever you roll the Robber, pause the game and play a game of Werewolf with each player representing 1 hex on the Settlers of Catan board. The winning side votes one of their players as 'The Robber'. Place the Robber on his hex. Also, those who won the Werewolf game are now the Settlers players.

Alternative method- have said game of Werewolf in progress during Settlers, and as each person is killed, that hex is recorded as the next target for the Robber. This method doesn't force the Settlers players to play Werewolf.
