Don’t get me wrong. I like my father-in-law a lot. He’s a brilliant guy with a droll sense of humor, but little tolerance for things he labels as “drivel and nonsense.” He doesn’t enjoy cute and amusing, he merely puts up with it. To top it all, he is a mathematician. Hard core math. Stuff that makes my head spin.

On a recent visit, I tried to find various game “distractions” to pass the time. This is a quick recap of my quest to find a game that would intrigue him.

(Please feel free to add any game suggestions for his next visit.)

First off, he likes Go. He played it as a youth. I don’t own a set and I have no idea how to play the game. Could I learn it? Probably, but not very well. Would I ever play it when he wasn’t around? Most likely, Never.

Box Score: Not in the Ballpark – (at least in MY ballpark.)

I figure this one might appeal to his broad-based knowledge and interest in European history. In fact, I purchased it with him in mind. He takes one look at the rules and graciously brushes it aside. “Too many rules to wade through for his attention span.” Hmmm. Too many rules, eh? Really? OK, I’m not breaking out Squad Leader anytime soon.

I personally don’t find this game terribly compelling, but I think he might enjoy the math and simplicity of play. We complete two games and he shrugs his shoulders. “It’s… …OK.”

I think this game is quite good. Fast playing and simple to understand. Some good natured “whack-the-other-guy.” Maybe he will like that, I figure. Alas, it only gets a tepid response. Maybe the balloon theme is too cutesy. Dang. I really wanted to try “Through the Desert,” but now I’m thinking he would immediately blanche at the sight of pastel camels.

Another game that I think is very good. Maybe abstract games will be better. No distracting Meeples, Jesters or Pharaohs to contend with. “Not bad,” is the response. I think the scoring throws him. Best of the last wins. How quaint. (Maybe Blokus would resonate well, but not as a two-player. Juggle TWO colors at the same time? Bah.)

Why didn’t I think of this one before! He likes Poker. A deck of cards and nine red thingies. Of course, we don’t play with the Tactics cards. Just keep it simple. One game turns into two. Three games turns into five. He actually asks me to play it again the next night! OMG. I end up sending him home with my copy of the game! There IS hope after all.

This may seem off the wall, but the inductive reasoning and logic may be appealing. It is very popular with my friends, who are mostly computer programmers and engineers.

However, if you are only playing 2 player things, you will end up having to play variants, which are probably not quite as fulfilling as the multiplayer game.

As a bonus, there are many games that can be played with the pyramids, and they are all abstract due to the nature of the bits. Volcano may be good to try, as well, and is better with two players, in my opinion.

Now... this is a risky one... but trust me: there is A LOT in this game to get a mathematician interested!
Maybe the hardest part would be to get him to try a full game. One of my most serious/hardcore friends thinks that this game is simply piece of true genious... "It's a game about conexity!"

Kent Reuber's comment on Knizia under Battleline made me think of a meta-game approach to your quest. Whichever Kinizia game I try, whether "heavy" or "light", I find myself admiring the usage of maths which went into making the game design work as well as it does. For example, I doubt from your description whether your father-in-law would neceessarily like Lord of the Rings, but consider the mathematical creativity of getting the design to work as well as it does and be as balanced as it is. Moral: try more Knizia.
