Little brother's birthday present from his wife was some time to play games with me. So she and the nephews came to my house this Sunday afternoon, and I went there. (Didn't know Chiefcon (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...) was going on, or we may have crashed it.) Here's what we played.

This is what I got Mike for his birthday. We played this about 5 times. I won once or twice. This is one of those games where you think, "Oh, I know what will work. Let's give it another go." We had the most luck winning with the dark side. Figure out where Frodo is and send the Nazguls after him. So simple and yet so many strategies to try. I hope his wife will play this with him.

Next was HeroClix. We played a 300 point game. He drafted with his heart despite my recomendations. My 4 strong heros destroyed his 6 or 8 weakies. I think he was looking forward to playing this, but his loss left him with a bad taste in his mouth.

Then we played the free download Sword and Sail. We used Risk pieces with cannons as navies. This is a fun little game and worth the download. I wish we had had a bigger map as the 8 1/2 x 11 version is just too small. Thumbs up for this freebie. I won this one too.

Tired of being pummeled at the table, Mike suggested we retire to the living room, pull out the N64, and shoot it out over a little Golden Eye (we didn't play the card game from heartbreaker). Again, I thumped him, repeatedly dropping his pathetic spy to the ground in a pool of his own blood. But then the switch flipped. He got the eye of the tiger or something, came back and wouldn't lose another the rest of the night.

It was Sunday after all. So we got ready to rrrrrummmble! Despite my best efforts, and having the ball so close to his goal line, I came up scoreless in this dicefest, losing 2-0. This is a fun one, and probably best played after a couple beers.

Finished the night with Battle Line. This is a good one that I wish I owned (along with the other 300-some games on my wish list). Mike won this, the final game of the night. My only problem with this game, as I look back, is a literary, or narrative, one. It seems that there was no climax to this game. It just eventually ended as we made our last few card plays, counted the flags, and determined the winner. Battle Ball, on the other hand, while probably not as good a game (7.57 vs. 6.60), has an ebb and flow, and there is some real drama as my opponent completes his pass and dashes for the endzone while my slow back lumbers in his direction in an effort to stop the game winning point. Anybody know what I'm talking about here? Is there a geeklist of games that best follow a dramatic narrative?
