I am about to open a BoardGame Cafe in Thailand on an University Campus. BoardGames are almost unheard of in this country and we are going to face a lot of inertia to inoculate the virus here. But the popularity of Board Game Café in Korea and Singapore make us hopeful that we could ignite a new trend here.

The list below constitute my inventory wish list (because of school-year, we will be operational in June 2006 which leave us plenty of time to organise play test to see what click and what doesn t)
Here are my criteria:

1 - Low language barrier
Our targeted student population is educated and english speaking but not native speaking. We will therefore avoid play cards cramed with 150 words of instruction and exceptions with a font of 3 like in War of the Ring. This said, Magic the Gathering is big with Thai teenager in this country which make me think that that we do not need to restrict our list to purely language independant games.

2 - Learning curve: 30 minutes or less
Because we are operating in a BoardGame Cafe it would be difficult to induce new customer through a lenghtly rules learning process. We need to stay on the light side (until a hard-core cluster of gamers develops)

3 - Avoiding anything longer 90 minutes
Until a hardcore group materialise...

4 - No Classics
No Monopoly, Risk or Chess. We want our brand to be associated with new generation of (euro) BoardGame: we have the chance and the challenge of having an almost virgin market in front of us, so let's start it up with contemporary gameplay.

It seems logical to start with the archetype of 'Gateway Games' responsible for the (re) birth of a generation of Board gamers.
The first Game Cafe open in Singapore was named after it, and it is also one of the rare euro Game being feature on this Koarean BoardGame Cafe List:http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listid=2436

I have big hope for TtR in Thailand. This now classic Euro-game is almost language independant and has the right lenght and a gentle learning curve.

If I ever have to return to Europe... this will be by train, so that it takes as long as possible.

There is one underplayed use of Boardgame: dating. A friend of mine who is preaching the boardgaming way of life in Malaysia tells me that he often asked for games that girls likes... by shy and young male gamers. It's not a bad angle at all actually... Tom Vassel wrote somewhere that 65% of the players found in Board Game cafe in Korea are female.

So Boys, this one is for you. I am told that girls are found of these cute little pastel coloured camel. If you don't get laid with that...

I have to confess that I haven't played any Carcassone game yet. A statistical oddity which is not going to persist for too long. I must say that I have always been daunted to select a Caracassone game among all these variants. I wonder if there is other like me who are backing off from well branded game collection simply because of a choice dilemna.
Anyway, this is a classic, nicely language independant, and therefore a must have for my BoardGame Cafe... wonder which mix of games and expansion I am going to pick up thought...

Greetings from Malaysia!

Bang!, with its icons on the cards is easy to learn. The special cards can be explained easily. Also, the game can be quite noisy. This would perhaps attract curious onlookers standing outside your cafe. Wouldn't they want to aome in and play such a fun game, too?

I've always wanted some bar/cafe that had crokinole laying around! This fits all of your parameters: language independent, quick-to-learn, short games. I love to use this as a gateway game, because it allows people to sit down and have fun with about 1-2 minutes of rule explanations.

An extra bonus for a cafe environment, is that if this is laying around, it truly invites questions. People will naturally sit down and begin flicking, and then wonder, "what am i supposed to be doing here?"

Here is an excellent choice for your 2-player abstract strategy. Plateau offers different unit capabilities, two possible victory conditions, and a very intense game each time, since there is bluffing due to the stacking of the pieces and the two-sidedness of some of them. Additionally, the 4×4 board means there is very little space to run away, so the action gets started quickly. Plateau is an elegant game, in that a simple ruleset provides robust play.

This one would work well, I think. It's language-independent and great fun to play. It almost always attracts an audience, as well! As an added bonus, it plays 2-7 people. If somebody is not sure about playing, they can be the one to build the monster -- by the time they're finished building the monster, they'll probably be excited about the game.
