Warning: I like to polemicize, so don't take the "real" part too serious

After looking at BGG for a while, I have come to notice, that the majority of players on this site play german-games. Not that there is anything wrong with german games: they're quite cute
But someday a "german-gamer" should grow up :-p and at least try some REAL games, wich means:
- more than 10 pages of rules
- more than 5 hours of play
- well, just "more"

Here is a list of the games I think could help make the transition, please feel free to add items to it other comment it.

A good introduction to political games with a lot of (funny) role-playing
The "Presidente" is always "so sorry" not to have a dime to give to his ministers... But if you don't like his politics, you always have at your disposal the normal "democratic" ways to o get rid of him:
- his dead
- A putsch
It even has a built-in "wargame" for the coup d'etat

The serious version of Junta
It's a bit more complicated, but perhaps more political than junta.
You play the role of a senator family in Ancient Rome, looking to increase your influence and (perhaps) become a new Ceasar

If you like the book, that's the game! And if you like the game, read the book!
Not a difficult game (easier than RoR, above) and with a loooooot of flavour: 6 players, each one with his special abilities (inspired in the book).

If you are into pirates, this can be your game. Not long, and not complicated.

A bit like Advanced Civilization (see below) but just different
It's quite shorter than Civilization (with 6 players, 6 hours), and plays a lot different thanks to his card-system.
It's no "pleasant" game, for example: when you are forced to play a commodity (lack of money, etc.), your opponents can win a LOT more than you, and then buy an advance they will use against YOU!
Not a "nice" game, but quite funny

If you happen to have 14 hours to play, this is your pick. A CLASSIC. Really easy and dinamic game-mechanics. A lot of german games are inspired on this one. If you play Vinci (i like it), why don't you try the original one?
(but don't play to win if you don't want to risk to loose for 10 hours )

No luck, just plain negotiation. Another classic. A MUST.

Any columbia-game could be a good soft-introduction to wargaming. Most "hardcore" wargames must still achieve the fog of war these games so simply create.

A little introduction to the Zucker Napoleonic games. I think they are the best operational games you should find for this period .
