Why, oh why must they be tortured so? I buy them and they pile up on the table and then they get shoved to the back of a creaking old bookshelf, doomed to be coated in cat hair and flaked ceiling plaster. All they want is to be played and loved, played and loved.

Games that I own and haven't played, but don't want to get rid of quite yet.
Please note the "don't want to get rid of" part in the previous sentence.

I like block games. I don't have any other WW2 Desert War games. It's a Columbia Classic(TM). I have willing opponents (Dr. Glaze, Dan, take your bows here.) So why is it still gathering dust? The mystery continues.

Yes, this game is an investment - not only in terms of time, which seems to be in shorter and shorter supply these days - but also in a more conventional sense: I figure if I don't like it, it shouldn't be hard to recoup the $50 I paid for it.

From what I hear, this is a game that requires multiple plays to "get". What are the chances, really?

Update: Apparently the chances are "none". Traded away unplayed. Don't really regret it.

I've read and reread the rules to this one, like a lullaby it sings me to sleep. It really inspires me as a game designer. Kos and Emrich thumb their noses at many hex-and-chit wargame conventions, but they don't really stray too far. Like Nappy Wars, I wonder in the end if it's worth the trouble of getting all that verbiage and chrome down, only to find out we'd been playing it "wrong".

Update: Everything I had hoped it would be and more. Only played a shorter scenario, but now my appetite is whetted for the whole shebang.

Now we enter the realm of the possible. These days especially, there is rarely time in my schedule for a game that runs over 90 minutes, unless plans are made specifically to play it well ahead of time. Viking Fury, though attractive and not unpopular, doesn't seem fit to top that list. Not fair, I know. Should I make the effort?

Update: Played 2007-12-30. Here are my comments:

(5) This one's a bit of a puzzle. We finally got it to the table after almost two years of owning it unplayed, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. From the rules, you can see how the individual pieces of the design work, but the "big picture" is elusive. Then you start to play, and after the initial learning curve of how to handle the sailing limits and manage the risks of raiding, you start to get a feel for the whole thing. At the end, when the sagas are claimed at an increasing rate and every nook and cranny of the board is exploited, and finally when the settlement overscoring dominates play, it left me a little cold and wondering if it was four hours well-spent. I think a tighter two-hour version would be quite a good game, but as is it will come out only occasionally at best.

See Rommel In The Desert, above. Except for the Classic(TM) part. Though I do love me some single-sitting Pacific War gaming, yes indeedy I do.

Update: Played 2006-06-08. Here are my comments:

(6) It's another block game. All the pieces fit, everything works, but I think the situation leaves something to be desired -- One side or the other is running amuck throughout the game except for a couple of finely balanced turns in the middle. I'd rather see an operational-scale treatment of the 1942-3 campaigns. Anything before or after that is a grind for the losing side. However, taken as it is with the premise it is given, it's a fine game. Victory conditions should be all or nothing, since that's what it usually comes down to.

Here's a horse of a different stripe - I doubt I could find an opponent for this one. Among my loose group, I'm perhaps the most forgiving of Hasbro's new efforts. Also, I'm perhaps the most forgiving of the Lucas' recent questionable efforts. I dunno, some days you gotta move some ships, roll some dice, and kill some stormtroopers.

Yet another in a long line of lackluster wargames that have historical or mechanical appeal, but not enough to actually warrant setting up and playing. Except maybe with Dan, or Dr. Glaze after a Dunkin' run.

P.S. - I have both the AH/SPI and the 3W games. The entry seems to be confused about which it is. Aw heck, throw in the S&T game while you're at it.

Played! Finally got the Doktor to come around on this one, we played 3/4 of a scenario over two WNW sessions. Two thumbs ups!

I suspect I don't need another fluffy thematic filler card game. I've got a shelf-full of those (and yes, it's even sorted like that.) Sometimes I pick up a game for "research" - and I've been thinking about auto racing games a lot lately.

Played some time in the summer of 2007, with my sister-in-law and her son. Not completely mindless, but not much of a game either. I left it in their care...

Just how many long, involved, multi-player free-for-all games does one person need to own? We may never know the answer.

I like the combat system, I like the ideas of the factions with different goals and powers, I like the plastic plastic plastic. But do I really want to spend five hours for a grand result of "meh."

Not played! Traded away unplayed.

Yikes. Fussy old ugly 70s wargaming. Still, there's stuff to like here, although the definitive Sengoku-era game has yet to be written (I know. I've tried.) I'm not sure I'd want to sic the Glaze/Dan combo on this one. Too easy to pick on.

This one goes along with Fred the Great above, in that I picked it up because I have an interest in the Seven Years War. I like a lot of the basic ideas in the game, but I'm not too fond of the grafted-on card mechanic. Smacks a little too much of wanting to follow the 'hot' new trend in wargaming, but it doesn't seem well tested on follow-through.

Another one of my game design "holy grails" is a clean football game that allows meaningful play decisions, uses playerteam stats (real or fictional), and comes in at not much more than an hour playtime.

This is not that game.

Not that there's nothing to like here, but I don't think the solution I'm looking for involves stat cards with results on them for every player in the game - I'd rather see players with ratings and a more generic play resolution mechanic, closer to The Grid. But that's me.

I remember playing this game over lunch in junior high. Heck, it's a sci-fi wargame with all these different countries and stuff. And I irrationally dig the Jeff Dee art. But I just know that if I actually try to play this now, it'll be like watching Battle of the Planets as an adult. That way lies madness.

Update: Played 2006-11-01. Here are my comments:

(4) Very typical late 70s-early 80s wargame with fantasy/sci-fi chrome. This game has no garing horrible flaws, but nothing works 100% right either. The rather low unit density, lack of zones of control, and the hovercraft-boosted mobility all make for a wide-open game with crazy swirling campaigns-of-the-moment. The individual psychic powers add to the melange of nuttiness. The first third of the game is a meatgrinder as high attrition kills dozens of units, all of which pretty much come back right away. In the midgame, there are some more decisions about who to replace and where to strike, but by the endgame one side is going to be on the losing end of that attrition and then it's a matter of time. All in all, a kooky but not terrible game, but I can't say I can recommend it to anyone.

I'm unreasonably attracted to the presentation of this game. I own (and love) far too many card games which are variants on rummy or other traditional games, and there might be some flaws that will break this one, but... I just gotta try it. I want to like it, I really do.

Update:
This one got tried out last night. Here's my rating and comment:

(6) I came in with relatively low expectations, fearing a fatal flaw or broken mechanic... but all in all it worked and was fun. Not the greatest or most innovative game ever, but definitely worth it. It helps that the art and design are so appealing, and that there is absolute congruity in saying something like "Hasn't anybody got Bemusotrons for my Nutragoo!??" or "One of your Monoliths has Spoiled!"

This game defines the essence of this list.

I've owned it for at least a year at this point, and more often than not it makes it into my bag when I head to Morgan's or Dr. Glaze's... but it never, and I mean NEVER, makes it out of committee.

For all I know, this is one kickass game that will shoot to the top of my list, but at this rate I wonder if I'll ever find out.

I know I could basically browbeat a group into trying it out, but then I think... "The Seven Wise... is this really worth a browbeating?"

Regardless, once again, it goes in my bag for tonight.

At least it's pretty.

Update: Well, it didn't get played that night, but it did finally make it to the table on 2005/11/22. Here's the rating:

(5) Hmm. Definitely one of those games where you play it once (three-player in this case) and then go "huh." Not quite like anything else I've played with its mix of light hand management, bluff, and negotiation. Each part seems fine on its own, but the mixture is one big question mark. I'll give it another try with four, but expect it won't make the cut.
