I flew home to Missouri last week to help out my Mother who was recovering from hip surgery. (She's doing really great, by the way.) When my brother (Chris) and I weren't running errands, we were doing gaming. We actually got Mom to play a few games with us.

Caesar and Cleopatra was one of the games I brought with me. We played it once. It was enjoyable, but there were games that we liked better.

We played Hera & Zeus a couple of times and really liked it. I won one game in utter desperation: Chris had my front line battered down to a couple of cards, and I managed to pull the hostage out of his hand with Pegasus. In another game, Chris won when Pandora "detinated" and blew up the hostage.

We played Hellas once. Chris won by playing an Ares "double attack" card and took over two cities at once. This was a really cool game that we'll definitely play again. In thinking about it the play, I think I should have done more Voyages earlier in the game.

We played 3 games of this. I have a complete set of Gettysburg. We've realized that there are a couple shortcomings. One, it's too hard to shuffle 100-150 cards, and it's especially annoying since you aren't using most of them. And, it's too easy for the 30 random cards to be completely unbalanced (too many generals, not enough artillery, etc.). Probably, we should be using the point system, but that takes a lot of prep time. I'll probably come up with some random method of taking a certain number of artillery, infantry, etc.

Ticket to Ride Europe was one of the games that we played with Mom. Of all the games we played, she said she like the "train game" the best. She's traveled in Europe some time ago and seemed enchanted with the geography aspect of the game. Chris wiped the board with us. I wasn't able to complete a couple of tickets and Chris drew a number of extra tickets. I'm now converted to the strategy of starting with fewer tickets and drawing more during the game.

Coloretto was another game that we played with Mom. We must have played about 5 games or so. This was one of my games that I brought with me from California. I thought that this would be a simple enough "gateway" game to entice Mom to play and I was right. She said that playing games helped take her mind off the surgery and worrying about herself, though she sometimes got stiff if she sat and played too long.

We played one game of Oh Pharaoh with Mom. I squeaked out a win by 1 point by cashing in a 6 level pyramid in the closing round. I had enough cards to make it a 7 level pyramid, but I wouldn't have been able to cash it before the end. A good game enjoyed by everyone I think.

Devil Bunny Hates the Earth wasn't as good as "Needs a Ham" in my opinion. I'm not sure we were doing the squirrel moving part of the game correctly, so we may not have gotten the point of the game.

Chris had a copy of Titan the Arena. We are both really fond of Titan, the boardgame, but I never was attracted to Titan the Arena when it was available. It seemed like a ripoff that really had nothing to do with Titan per se. What a great game! We played this a couple of times and will definitely play it again. I picked up Colossal Arena for the future.

We played several rounds of Duell, and used the option from the old En Garde game where you can lunge to attack then play any card to retreat. This game is reasonably fun and I'd certainly play it again.

We also tried "En Garde" the new Slugfest game. I must admit I don't like this game as well as I like Duell; it's much more random. The "poise" recovery cards like "tuck in your shirt" are very cute.

I brought the Flagship game with me and we played it before I boarded the plane home. I bought this because we both like "Mag-Blast" and this game looked like it would have more strategy than Mag-Blast. I didn't review the play before laying it out, and we did a *bunch* of things wrong. We'll need to try it again before we can really judge the game.

We played one game of Dungeon Twister. I didn't care for the "no luck" design. The dungeon crawl experience felt a bit contrived with the rotating rooms. I wish it was man vs. monsters.

I also taught Chris how to play Backgammon. We played 2 games, I think. Even by the second game, Chris was making some excellent decisions on piece movement. In my opinion, Backgammon is one of those games that everyone needs to at least try.

We played one game of Minotaur Lords. This came right down to the wire. I was down to one card and managed to run my brother out of cards. It was very close--I don't think I could have won the game through getting supremacy in 4 of the 6 areas. We'll definitely play this game again.
