These are the games in my collection that tend to qualify me into a status known as "Grognardhood". I guess when I think about it, I am a very competitive Grognard that loves realism and historical feel in my games. Not that I don't mind playing a quick game of Battleline, Memoir 44, or Battlecry though

From the historical photograph produced maps, to over 2,000 counters detailing even Mine Dogs (Russians used them in the battle against German Panzers); this is the ultimate tactical WWII game detailing the East Front. The system is very clean, and does an outstanding job of reproducing combat at this scale; snipers, flamethrowers, hidden deployment. This game is one of the treasures of my collection.

Newer doesn't necessarily mean better. This is still the ultimate political wargame detailing ancient Roman politics. It was one of my rights of passage into Grognardhood.

If you truly want to play the ultimate theater based WWII game, look no further. Europe Engulfed is one of the treasures of my collection. Contrary to popular belief, the game can be played in 2-4 hours. There is an excellent East Front tournament scenario that facilitates this. I am playing Europe Engulfed this weekend.

Obviously, ASL cetainly gets one tagged as a 'geek' if not a Grognard! My favorite ASL story: Three American guys travel to first Canada ASL championship. Asked at the border, "Do you have drugs, liquor or weapons to declare? Tobacco, knives, guns? Nothing?" OK - they MUST be lying! Pull them in! 45 minutes later, investigator is STILL examining the three large containers with three COMPLETE sets of punched ASL materials. He is using a pencil to dig thru the cardboard chits. "You use ALL these to play this game???"

Looking around my room, I'm trying to see what DOESN'T mark me as a Grognard? The computer desk converted to hold trays of wargames in progress - and little signs in plastic telling the opponent, move and date started? Might be a dead giveaway....

Having multiple copies of the original SPI version of Terrible Swift Sword and its many incarnations, plus double copies of the Pea Ridge, Wilson's Creek, Cedar Mountain and the rest might be a bit much for some people....

Falling hard for a game system that others won't touch might be a sign - but only if you can remember the LAST DAMN time you played it. Not just the details - the date. That doesn't seem like much either - until you realize you've been carrying a torch for a game you haven't played since May 16, 1983.

Oh, and there might be extra points for getting the inside joke that the Russian leader counters are named for TV stars and punk rockers.

My favorite, and IMHO the ultimate empire building game.

The map is huge, and the game has stacks and stacks of counters.

I love this game. I just wish I could find more people to play it.

OK - then there is looking for opponents for games that marked the END of an era. And creating player aids to make it easier for an non-existent audience to play said game has to define what it means to be a Grognard.

In my defense I will say that Monmouth is a nifty system, and my quick reference chart is certainly a boone to anyone who MIGHT play the game. The Excel worksheet is a great way to keep track of the victory points, too.

Excessive? Me? What makes you think so?

Purchasing and playing on first publication the original self-produced version, after which Avalon Hill wisely picked it up. Had very colorful counters, as well as two unfoldable and very sturdy maps, each about 3' x 5', which made it very difficult to store....

Amateurs. All of you.

First hire HMS President for the weekend. Then gather together 151 players. Now start to wargame the whole of WW2's political, economic and military aspects from April 1945 to a result.

Read the After Action Reports. Look at the photos taken of the game on the day. If you are interested now download some of the game material and put the rerun planned for 2007 in your diaries.

This game is what truly makes me a grognard because it is the truest grognard game I own. I like this game (even though I prefer others) because it showed the unbalance of the war and how in a war you cannot try to take out the other player's army but you have objects. In this game, my object was to hold my fort and be most defense. I kept wanting to go attack the other armies instead. Well, I learned. I haven't played in awhile. I think its time to take another look or get through those rules to Paths of Glory I got for my birthday.
