Ursuppe. I stumbled across a game store near home named "Games Galore" in Cary, NC. Inside they had a plethora of games - the old standbys like A&A and Stratego and a bunch of what I later learned were "German Games". My wife and I bought Tikal and Prefix (a word game) and immediately got reacquainted with board gaming.

The sales guy had recommended this game, Ursuppe, as a cool game and it sounded like it was right up my alley (theme, play style, etc.), but when we finally got it, we felt the maintenance of all the bits as well as the fact that it wasn't playable with 2 really killed it. But in the quest to find the game, I found www.fairplaygames.com, which referenced the 'Geek.

I can't even being to imagine how much $$$ this site has cost me!

A couple months ago, I googled "Diplomacy" looking for fansites with new variants, etc. I have loved board games since I was knee-high, but never knew there was a world beyond Hasbro and Parker Brothers until I uncovered this treasure trove. Before I got into German games, I discovered this little company called Cheapass Games. By the time I had bought (but not played!) all of the CAG line, I was looking for other envelope game companies, and my research took me to Funagain.com, where I heard about this game called Lord of the Rings.

Aside from the glowing reviews, the cooperative play of the game intrigued me, even if the price tag didn't. I asked for the game for Christmas, but until I received it, I was checking Funagain.com almost every day to see what other sorts of games there were. Rage caught my eye, I remember, as did Bohnanza, since they were two of the bigger sellers of the time.

A few days passed before I finally clicked on the little guy running with Chess pieces coming out of his bag, but when I did, I was hooked. The Geek was less of a community then as it is now, but there was enough of one to get me hooked!

I found this game (plus expansions) for $10 at a small game store while on vacation. A friend of mine introduced me to it back in my teenage years, so I was really happy to finally run across a copy.

It wasn't until someone mentioned that it was a great buy that it even occurred to me to search for other boardgamers online. Since the fateful day I discovered The 'Geek, my collection and love of boardgames has grown exponentially.

You people hold the blame for what has happened to my poor checkbook. You shall never be forgiven.

I bought this game in my teens while still living at home; always loved the game and played it often for the first year or so. Other things grabbed my attention and the game found its way to a shelf in my mom's laundry room. I joined the service in 1990 and have been stationed in places all over the world.

When I returned to the states I was assigned to a base in Utah and wandered into a game store in the mall. Browsing the store brought back memories of the times I had playing games in my younger days, and made me get re-connected.

Having know the location I had placed this old game from my past I called my mom and had her look for it. Needless to say she shipped it to me and it was like finding an old friend again. That was the begining of a 70+ game collection of which I have no plans to stop. I've introduced my family to game day and even have my kids enjoying a hobbie that can't be wrong. Family, friends and fun. Thant's what lifes all about.

I live a few blocks from Drexoll games which is a great shop to stumble into and explore lots of new games. After spending lots of time looking at games and randomly buying ones that looked cool I realized I needed some way of finding out which games I would like and which I should avoid... and in came BGG.
I probably found the site on a Google search... probably. I looked at the list of hot games and Polarity caught my eye, mostly because I'm an astrophysicist... mostly. I bought the game from Drexoll and love it. Ever since then I have been a stern believer in: 'Yea it looks cool, but what do folks say on BGG?'
I have found the review threads an invaluable resource.

I've been playing SFB for a *while* now (was in a local game shop), and when doing an eBay search for SFB products I didn't have (this was during the interregnum when there was no official way to buy SFB products new).

ANYWAY, came across this game on eBay. I was immediately caught, as I had played this *to death* as a kid (my mother had found it at a garage sale, and thought it might be fun for he sons into SciFi). It was this game, originally, that actually got my bro and I into Trek in the first place (which we later lost interest in), and SFB.

SO...definitely had to do more research on this game to find out if it was as fun as I remember (it wasn't, but I bought it anyway for nostalgia), and, more specifically, to see if I could find the other games in the series that the rulebook had hinted at (turns out to be a much shorter series than the rulebook seemed to intend! LOL)

As it goes, Google + game in question = BGG link.

Still hoping that GW reprints the expansions (of course, I've cooked up my own versions by now, but still would buy the real ones, although obviously at nowhere near the criminal prices on ebay). For all the abuse Talisman gets, it's a very fun, straight-forward pseudo-rpg adventure game to play with your young kids.

I'd done some role-playing years ago but thought board games didn't do much for me. I did know about wargames and thought they were intriguing but probably demanded too much time, space, dedication, etc. for me to get into them. Then a friend showed me Roborally. I loved it but assumed it was an aberration. A couple years later, another friend played Settlers with me. Again, thought it was cool but had no idea about the board game renaissance. Finally, this last summer, an old customer decided to clear out his storage unit and gave several boxes of games to the store I manage. What a treasure trove! I was reluctant to take any for myself -- worried they'd take up space at home and never get played -- but they were so tantalizing I decided I'd choose a single one for myself and sell the rest at the store. Kingmaker was the game I chose.

I already knew about the geek because I'd used it as a resource once on behalf of the store. But this was the first time I went there for myself, just to read up on this exciting new box I'd brought home. Well, the reviews brought me down a little, but I discovered lot of other games that I was suddenly dying to play and to read discussions about.

And now that I've cut my teeth on a few other games, Kingmaker is actually looking good to me again and not as difficult to learn as it seemed to my newbie eyes. I don't expect it to be my favorite game ever, but I'm really looking forward to playing it. Plus, I love the the theme. Hooray for Kingmaker!
