You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. -- Frank Zappa

While mixing beer and nuclear weapons in the real world is not a great idea, it's not a bad idea in the gaming world because there are a number of good games that either have nuclear weapons or can even end with a full blown nuclear exchange.

Years ago my friends and I use to play the card game Nuclear War. Lots of fun. It's one of my favorite beer and pretzels games. Later there was the expansion for it called Nuclear Escalation that could be played alone or combined with the original game which was fantastic. We use to play the game with the two decks combined. I have many fond memories of full blown nuclear wars with these games.

Today I was in my FLGS when I saw they just got in Nuclear Proliferation, the third game in the series (or second expansion, depending on how you use it) and grabbed it. Can't wait to once again be tossing warheads with the game like old times.

Anyway, the game brought to my mind that I have Twilight Struggle on order from GMT. That is a game that could possibly end with a nuclear exchange (game over of course). So I thought this might be kind of an interesting topic for a geek list. Games that involve nuclear weapons or can end with a nuclear exchange.

The one, the only, the original. This is a great game but I am not sure if I am going to pick this up however. I have Nuclear Proliferation now and will pick up Nuclear Escalation when it's reprinted next month so I question the need for all three of the games. I might do it is simply to have the always popular Supergerm card in the game.

The one thing I never liked about this game was the spinner which was eliminated in the expansion thank goodness.

I love the MX missile in this game. The gift that keeps on giving. This expansion also added such new things as the space platform.

Like I said above, this game differed from the original in that it used a die (One that glowed in the dark no less) and we always simply used the die and the spinner became a thing of the past.

I noticed in the rules for Proliferation that there are now rules for combining the spinner with the die rolling. Not sure if that is in the Escelation rules or not as I don't recall it being so. I know we never played with the spinner once we got the expansion.

Ok, spent about 15 minutes today looking over the new cards and weapon systems in this one. Not sure I like the ideas for the countries but I'll give them a shot. One can always not use them of course.

The having to write down the target for the submarine seems like a bother. I might simply create some house rule for the sub that doesn't involve the player having to write down the target on a piece of paper. Perhaps the player can set off the sub and it goes around the table from player to player until the owner decides to launch it against someone. That rule would be very similar to the rules for the cruise missiles however.

I really like the new cannon and space shuttle cards. Especially how the shuttle combines with the space platform.

Either way, I definately plan to combine this with Escalation when it's reprinted next month.

Another reason not to get the original. I just discovered while making this list that there is now a 3rd expansion. One only needs so many cards in a game. I'll very likely pick this up down the road somewhere to combine with Escelation and Proliferation.

The title sounds a bit silly (I like it) but this was a serious wargame and a pretty decent one too. The idea is that Nazi Germany negotiates a peace and survives WW II. In the 1990s they again try for world domination against Nato.

It's rather a good what if game that had a number of scenarios and such. I played it several times with a friend who owned it and we had a good time with it. It was published by a company called Decision Games which made a number of good "what if" titles including Downfall which was the US invasion of Japan at the end of WW II.

While technically the base version of G.E.V. has nukes, the Shockwave expansion has nuclear missiles on a scale above that of the base game. The cruse missiles in this game can wipe out entire armies with good placement and some luck.

Game in an issue of Conflict magazine. Map reminiscent of a display from "Dr. Strangelove." Ominous hordes of Soviet bombers (and, optionally, a few SLBMs) {in a strange shade of pink with black silhouettes} appear along the DEW line or off the coast.

Defenses consisted of Interceptors and a few Nike batteries in pale blue with silhouettes (F-102s).

Soviet bombers were either decoys (blank backs) or actual bombers (large nasty mushroom cloud on back). American cities were rated in points for population value in millions (1950s populations). Short and fun. Dana Lombardy design, if I remember correctly.

Very polished DTP with mounted, die-cut counters. A lot of good material in a small package depicting the dawn of strategic global nuclear warfare in the 1950s. Conventional land, sea and air combat plus nuclear delivery systems represented by individual weapon type, including the enormous B-36. Multiple scenarios.

Stand-alone games, two in the package, bringing Warplanropshot's system through the succeeding decades up to the end of the Cold War. Same excellent graphic treatment, thorough and insightful rules, multiple interesting scenarios.

The two games (Dropshot:60s and Dropshot:Endgame) share a few nuclear impact and other utility markers, but each has its own full countersheet reflecting continuing weapons development through multiple aircraft and missile delivery systems, Stealth technology, and the possibility of orbital platforms.

Although this game has the same title as Yaquinto's nuclear warfare game, it is a very different game, featuring a global board and units for conventional ground and sea forces with cards adding force variety (jet bombers, airmobile infantry, etc.).

There are no "nukes" in the game, but under certain conditions players can construct "orbital laser platforms." These are one-shot weapons of great destructive power. If it shoots once like a nuke, and it devastates whole armies and fleets like a nuke . . .
