It is with some trepidation that I sit down with pen and inkwell to draft this essay, memories of my previous encounter with this subject still fresh in my mind. I and my colleague Dr. Rüdiger Knizia (no relation, I assure you), as you may recall, found ourselves recently perplexed by the strange case of a man gripped by the need to expand his collection of board games. After publishing our findings:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

we settled down to a life of semi-retirement, occasionally writing each other to play St. Petersburg by mail through a neutral third-party in London. Given the last few draws, I cannot discount the possibility of foul play, but that's beside the point.

Recently, I received a stack of papers from the good doctor, writing from his palatial estate on Clark and Addison in Chicago (which he rents out for sporting events), about our old friend and kashenbovin, David.

Unfortunately, David had made over-constructive use of his free time, and worsened his condition considerably in the process. Smelling an opportunity, I have compiled my findings herein. I warn my good readers in advance, however, these are not for the squeamish:

An unfortunate descent into light card games commenced with the purchase of "Bang!" Possibly indicative of violent tendencies, but we lack sufficient data to be certain, since the subject can never seem to find five other people to play with.

He seems to know enough to stay away from "Fluxx," however.

Exhibit B was Hector and Achilles, a two-player game which has sat on the subject's shelf since purchase. Further supervision seems to be required, lest the patient get sucked in by another cool theme.

Exhibit C: Hera & Zeus. Also light, but this one has actually been played, so this whole diversion hasn't been a total loss. Still, the subject's inability to focus will need...

Sorry, lost my train of thought.

Turning to strange hybrids of German games and dungeon crawls, the subject got his hands on "Dungeon Twister," a clear result of his earlier Fearsome Floors purchase. After a hurried phone call to Texas, we convinced his brother not to play this with him over Thanksgiving break.

Frustrated in his attempts to acquire another copy of Talisman, the subject then acquired this reworking from Fantasy Flight Games. Equally well playable solo and in groups, but victim to similar downtime problems which plague all such games. The subject plays in a particularly cautious fashion, which likely indicates acute agoraphobia. Or maybe he's just a wuss.

I'm not entirely sure why Dr. Knizia insisted I place this entry here, since the subject does not actually own a copy, and has normal dating patterns. He only writes that the Chicago College of Gaming Psychiatry requires a mention in all academic papers and promised me a "cut," whatever that means.

I have since purchased three copies.

Not purchased, but borrowed and loved to the point of mania, despite using the wrong rules for a while. Regrettably, the subject's use of this game's online version means an inordinate amount of time spent practicing.

Rüdiger thinks that, with time, he'll finally get David to take the Mistress of Ceremonies whenever it comes up.

Next, his interest turned to big games with a "network" theme, such as this monster, which was a big hit. This will almost definitely be purchased, and soon! Incensed, I drove to Friedemann Friese's and demanded to know why he was still supplying David with games, after our little "talk" after Finstere Flure.

Well, I would have, if I'd been able to get past the well-armed (and well-briefed) security at the guardpost by the south entrance. He'll be hearing from my lawyers!

Another along the same lines, though only bearing half the U.S. on its board. Clearly some form of sadism is manifested here, as the subject has been known to cackle maliciously while cutting off access to Toronto.

The culmination of this unfortunate trend. A big-box dungeon crawl with fantastic bits, based loosely on Runebound. Unable to keep up with David any further, Dr. Knizia has had him transferred to the Valerie Putman Home for the Obsessively Acquisitive, where he is resting quite comfortably in the Torgerson wing.

I regret, after all our efforts, that David is clearly beyond our aid. Perhaps if we'd gotten to him sooner, we'd have been able to help him, or, at the very least, wring about three more articles out of him.

Damned inconsiderate of him.
