I think Geekdom is often acquired as a child. Back in the 60s there weren't the kinds of choices avilable now, but they were good enough to create a lifetime love of gaming. Here's a short tribute to the most signficant games I played in the 60s.

I don't know if this is the first boardgame I played. I probably played Chutes & Ladders before this, but Go To The Head of the Class was the first game to make an impression on me. The cardboard character busts passed for good bits back then.

Another early game that my mom was willing to play with us kids. It was fun and laid the groundwork for my own firm belief as an adult that playing games with the kids is one of the best ways to build bonds. TV is much too passive to fill that role and video games seem to divide generations, not bind them.

Maybe there's no strategy, but it's a good family time playing Operation. Very easy for the adults to 'lose' on purpose, too, without detection.

Another game that got a lot of play in the early days. Again, not really a game of strategy, but a way to provoke discussion about life, careers and the future between parents anc children, which is probably why it's been around for more than a century.

Spent many hours playing this at my best friend's house. I learned a lot about cut throat play there, too! They played to win. Like everyone else, we played with various unofficial house rules, including the infamous money on Free Parking custom, but it didn't seem to mar our enjoyment. The game is much funnier at 2 a.m., anyway!

This was a harbinger of things to come. I had so much fun with this game, and enjoyed reading the little American Heritage history booklet that came with it, that I became well primed for Avalon Hill a few years later. I hope that games like Memoir'44, A&A miniatures and Heroscape are playing a similar role now. For the 1960s the bits in this game were exceptional.

The historical booklet was good, but I was ignorant back then that this was simply a repackaged Blockade.

In March, 1969 I bought Avalon Hill's Midway from a mail-order naval miniatures company called ALNAVCO. I date the start of my Wargame Hobby (and general game geekdom) from this purchase. Before the year was out I'd bought and played a half dozen more games, and shortly after that gone to a convention (Spartan International con held on the Battleship Massachusetts and subscribed to S&T magazine.

For those who may be curious, this the Victory at Sea miniatures game I played at the Spartan International Convention on the Battleship Massachusetts.
