We all know that dead ccg's can be great, complete, complex games. Such as Netrunner, Middle Earth, Shadowfist, Legends of the Five Rings etc. However, many of these still demand fairly high prices due to their popularity and availability. This list is for some good games that can be purchased for very cheap prices. Even if you're a hardcore boardgamer, I strongly suggest picking up a box of starters and delving into some of these games. They are so cheap its certainly worth the price.

Boxes of the earlier sets can go for under $10, the later sets hurt the game more than help anyway. A light ccg with easy deck design, the shining point of the game is the bluff and guess combat system.

Another dead decipher game. This has the benefit of having the same mechanics as the Star Wars CCG, and thus some of the most inventive ccg mechanics ever. Starters and Boxes sell for really low prices, although aren't that plentiful.

Similar mechanics to Magic: the Gathering, except with more complexity and in game decisions. A superior game in my opinion. Not too many boxes floating around, but whole collections sell on ebay for around the price of a new boardgame.

My personal favorite. I think this is *the* best two player as well as multi-player CCG ever made. Incorporates strategic movement around town, town building, gunfights decided by playing "poker" with your cards, wagering...everything to add that feel of a western, with a flavor of horror tossed in! Look for Pine Box or Shootout at High Noon sets as great starters to the game. It'll include everything for a two player showdown!

On The Edge is probably the best 3-player CCG I've played. It also plays well in larger groups. Boxes are pretty cheap on E-bay. Some of the art is bleh but the game design was interesting and one of the few games where there was only 2 or 3 "banned" cards in tournament play from all the sets available.

One of the finest overlooked gems I know of in any format -really a damn fine boardgame carefully sliced up into a package that was able to work in CCG format. The art won't win any PC awards, but was so darn fine they borrowed it for at least 2 other games. It's a little baroque at first, but so smooth and well-tuned it's one of the very few CCG's that really does play quite well with untuned starters. offers a surpringly approachable yet deep amount of both strategic and tactical options.

This was unfairly lumped in with other, crappy licensed games due to its being very different from other CCG's. it's actually a really well-done reworking of the CLUE-style "whodunit" in CCG form, with 'teeth', a deeper level of challenge and an adversarial element added. It also boasts great production values and has an introductory level game to help introduce new players.

Despite all expectations, this game went down primarily for being too adult and mature in theme and subject matter even for the VAMPIRE:THE MASQUERADE-drenched gamestores of the time. Between having to lay out cards in a format based on Tarot card spreads and cards such as "MUTANT FETUS IN A JAR"
(I am sooo not kidding you, there is sooo a card soo very very close to that in this game)
, it's hard to figure which threatened boycott by which major religious group snuffed this one and its limited-distribution expansion, but that's because the field of contenders is so verry large... still, if you can get past all that, an interesting but unique, simple and "colorful" variant of MTG awaits...but definitely not for the squeamish.

This was my second favorite CCG after MAGIC. (However, I haven't played NETRUNNER yet. I'm hoping too soon though, since I bought a bunch of cards this past summer at Origins.)

The only problem with the JAMES BOND CCG is it needs more cards, at least an expansion or two. To make fun decks, you need a lot of cards from one movie and the basic set just doesn't have enough cards from anything except GOLDEN EYE. I guess one expansion set was ready to go but Target gave up on the game before it was released. The good news is you can find some more cards here: http://home.comcast.net/~gamesofjamesbond/ccg-index.html. As long as you don't mind making up the cards yourself. The best way to do this is to stick the new cards on top of the commons.

If you are looking for a simple CCG, this is it. The game is very light compared to most CCGs. You basically try to get a certain number of story points by playing cards and completing missions. Of course, a lot of the appeal comes from the theme so you probably need to like James Bond too.

If anyone has cards they want to get rid of because they don't want them anymore, I'll be glad to take them off your hands.

Happy New Year!
Alan

Technically this was excluded in the introduction to the list, but you can regularly buy a set of ten pre-constructed Challenge Decks of the Middle Earth CCG on eBay for only US$30.
Example: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=4&cam...
That's 10 decks, and a total of 1100 cards - if you ask me that's cheap!

Another one readily and cheaply available on ebay. There are not a ton of sets out there, so the card pool is on the small side, but that also means it did not go through rule additions that bogged down other games (I'm looking at you, Star Wars ccg).

And hey, pirates are cool.
