The name with any other game does not play as sweet.
I admit, I haven't played too many expansions or variants to games. Honestly, to my chagrin, I like when an expansion works. There are lists dedicated to expansions that are worthwile. This list is dedicated to expansions and official variants that are not.
Please add those you feel inhibit games by adding more to them.

Let's find a way to make a genius tight game stretch out into a downtime ridden murky mess -- battles in dune are already stressful enough why stretch it out. If you want to bet on the success of other players just do it in the standard version.

How can you make a perfect game better? I know add a pirate! Ok, I see the line of thought, but the pirate card should work better than that. It just feels like it screws up the game. Perhaps you can defend yourself with a sword or something. Still, I just don't think it works

Is it me or do the advanced cards just ruin a great game.

Ok, First I have to admit I don't like the standard game, but this expansion just makes things painfully annoying. If the game didn't already make you feel like you weren't in control then there is nothing like wasting a few turns building a river. It is nothing but set-up pretending to be a game. It would be like playing Settlers where each player plays one piece to build the island only you don't give them options as to where to place them. Ugh!

I understand it. I really do. You play a game a hundred times, and then a little variation is nice. Only, what once was a wonderfully balanced game now allows for people to get insane power combinations. It sure is fun playing against the guy with the Forest House / Hacienda combo isn't it. blech!

Yes, I know. Talisman has enough problems as it is, but why do this? And of course there is the cover art to complain about as well.

I know this one has many fans, but I am not one of them. C&K takes some interesting strategy elements, but puts them on top of a base game that is far too luck-driven to support them. Standard Settlers is the perfect length for a game with this much dice rolling, whereas I've played four hour games of Cities & Knights. Yuck. Also, the Mayfair edition has ugly and difficult to read knight pieces.

This one was free, which is great, but seemed barely playtested and not very well translated. El Grande is an excellent game without this needless addition. However, free expansions are vastly preferred to full price expansions.
