In 2005 Lisa and I decided we were going to track all our game plays. And we actually managed to do it! So, here for anyone who's feeling bored, are the games that got the most plays each month for us, and what we think of them nowadays.

In January, we had a total of 61 plays. Candamir had 8 plays. It had much more in December I'm sure! We were both very enthused about this one, and once we discovered the character generator we kept wanting to try out new combinations of abilities, which fueled our playing it.

It proceeded to be on top in February as well, accounting for 10 out of 71 of our games played that month. While we have stopped playing it quite so much now, it will be one that will get regular plays - at least once a month I think.

In January, tied with Candamir was Doom. I think this has the distinction of being a game with lots of plays due almost as much to being annoyed with it as liking it. We really liked the core mechanics, but the balance was so hosed it didn't really work. We kept tweaking to try to get it to where we wanted, but the long play time and frustration meant we gave up before ever getting it right. Now that we have Descent, it may never leave the shelf again.

In March, Alhambra, which had been a close second in the earlier two months came to the front with 7 plays out of our 55. The simplicity and enjoyment of playing this game ensures that it gets pulled out on a regular basis.

Suddenly in April, addiction set in! We picked up Saint Petersburg and just couldn't stop playing. I don't know what was so grabbing about it - we kept wanting to try new strategies. Games were often close, and it had in some ways a puzzle like feel to it as we tried to "solve" how to employ different combinations to best effect. 19 out of our 109 plays for the month, and then it led May as well with 11 out of 96!

This one has dropped of drastically after the addiction factor wore off; its still a solid and enjoyable game though.

June was kind of a weak month for games - only 51 total. Leading plays, we had a fairly low tie - 5 plays of Shadows over Camelot and 5 plays of Tower of Babel, both new games for us at the time.

Shadows grabbed us a lot initially. It was enjoyable struggling as a team to win; and it was suspenseful and exciting not knowing if there was a traitor lurking in our midst. (Though our first few games, even with 7 total players, never had a traitor in them!)
Now we've soured on it a bit; its not bad, just a bit repetitive. Not one we choose much, though we are happy to play when someone else wants to try it.

As a blind purchase (knowing nothing beyond "Knizia made it"), we were very happy with this. It never gets a lot of plays each month, but can be counted on to be pulled out for at least one or two sessions. Its very interactive and very easy to play, so its often good for a first semi-meaty game of an evening of gaming.

And addiction set in again in July! 17 out of our 72 plays were Arkham Horror. All but two of those were just Lisa and I. Much as we enjoy competing with each other, we like working on a team even more, and co-op games are so rare! With two players, this is a blast. It feels about as much like an RPG as a boardgame can hope to (true, it feels a bit more like fantasy adventure than Lovecraftian horror, but so what; I'm not sure Lovecraftian horror would make nearly as good a game!). We felt like we were wearing it out playing 2 characters each, then switched to 1 character each and found it was a very different experience - less time to develop and have fun exploring, but more tense and frantic.

Now, this isn't a game that will get pulled out often. The play time is a bit too long for a nice evening game, and there is too much downtime with more than two players. But this will definetly be a game I'll always look forward to getting a chance to play more of.

August had Oasis as a leader. 9 out of 77 plays, just barely leading Circus Flohcati with 8 (a very quick and easy to teach filler). Like Tower, this will continue to be a solid game, especially for introducing new or more 'family game' oriented players.

September saw a distinct drop in game plays, with only 44 total. Not much of an acheivement for the leaders to have 4 plays! We had actually play Zavandor more last month, playing entirely on homemade prinouts while we waited for our copy to arrive from Germany. One of my favorites of the 'heavier' games - there is so much to do! Weight and length (and German components which can be intimidating to new players) keep it from coming out as often as I would like.

Tied with Zepter was another purchase from Germany, Goldland, which is an enjoyable enough exploration game, but doesn't seem to have quite enough of a "grab" factor to hit the table very consistently.

October saw a lot of variety, and are biggest plays were only 3 out of 5o games each! Both of them, not suprisingly, were Halloween themed games that got a few plays at Halloween events.

Betrayal is great for a late night, spooky game, but it really takes the right crowd as its more experience than game. Really not right for everyone!

Tied with 3 plays in October was Spooks; its quick, its fun, its nicely Halloween themed. I don't know that it will come out much other times of the year, but as a light card game its really not bad! Playing for points is definetly the way to go, as its much more interesting than playing a single hand.

November once again saw lots of variety. Our highest play of a single game was 5 out of 50 total plays - and those 5 were all in one night of BGG.CON! This was our first experience with Werewolf, and it was a blast! We've since picked up a deck of our own (Lupus in Tabula version...it supports the most players, has the cutest art, and has a werehamster. A WEREHAMSTER!. How can anyone resist?) but who knows if we'll ever have enough people in the right environment to play it. Ah well - I can hope!

Too much going on in December to get in enough gaming! Only 44 plays, 4 of which were Crokinole. I bought Lisa a board for Christmas. Here in January, its solidly on top with around 20 plays. Its so easy to just sit down and play a quick game after dinner, and positioned right next to our entryway it gets the attention of people coming in and gets requested. A bit expensive, but so far it seems worth it.
