Well, it's been several weeks since I've seen a what do I buy next list, and seeing as I'm heading towards a new purchase, I thought I'd seek out the expertise of my fellow Geeks.

Just some back ground:
My wife and I are relatively new to the gaming scene, only starting with the 'new' games this past November. We have found how much fun they are and look forward to playing often.
We typically only have each other to play with but on occasion play with 1-3 more people. 2 player games would be great, but I'm open to suggestions for games needing more players.
I'm not looking for party games (although I would like to try Werewolf sometime).

I'm looking for the next level. A game that pushes strategy a little more, is a little deeper, and more of a challenge. I still like the light games, but I think I'm ready for the next step.

I've included a list of the games we love and only partially like (and one my wife doesn't like at all) and the games I'm considering getting next.

Any comments and additions would be welcome. Please, no expansions or revisions of games I've listed. I'm looking for a new game. (ie. no Carc expansions, and no T2R: Europe please).

This was the first of the 'new' games we got. We several expansions. We played this one many, many times and loved it. Although I feel that the expansions have dilluted it some and I've become a bit bored with it. I'd still recommend it to new gamers, but I'm ready to move on.

This was the second game we got. We loved it and played it like crazy. 2-3 games in a row (often at the request of me, ie. the looser). We still play it occasionally, but we've become a little bored with it.

I wouldn't mind a similar game as we both like the quick, light strategic play. My wife particularly likes that there isn't a lot of reading involved. I'll explain with my next entry.

I really like the potential in this one, although I've only played 2 player games of it (I feel that 3 is probably a sweet spot between chaos and strategy for this one). My wife didn't like it, although she has yet to finish a game of it.

She didn't like:
-The amount of reading on the cards. She loves books, loves games, but just doesn't enjoy reading the rules for games.
-The strategy was subtle to the point of not being there for her. Most of the cards are only useful in very specific situations and I think she just got bored of never seeing many of those situations.

This is currently one of our favorites. I'm becoming a little bored with it, but still enjoy playing. I've spiced it up a bit by trying to connect all my destinations with one long route while connecting to other major hubs so I can just pull cards on the last few turns. I'm getting tired of loosing though because I keep getting saddled with all the sub 10 point cards in the initial deal.

This one is a big hit with everyone we play with, from brother and sister-in-law, to parent in-laws who only know how to play Trivial Pursuit.

However, I'm not interested in the sequels at the moment, I'm looking for a different challenge.

Picked this up on a whim while in Boston, thinking it would be a light game I could play by myself and during lunch. Surprisingly, my wife enjoys it enough to play occasionally, and has shot me down more than I've gotten her. If the other sets weren't so expensive, I'd consider picking one of them up. But this isn't really the strategy that I'm looking for next.

This is works as a light filler for my family at the end of the night and we want to squeeze one more game in. We take out enough picknics so there's only one more than the number of people playing, otherwise with a 3-4 player game there is almost no conflict.

My wife requests this one quite a bit. I think it's a little dry (more like a race than strategy) with 2 players, but it's still fun. I think 3 may be another sweet spot with this one (2 characters each, with enough guessing to keep it interesting). I'd like to play this one with more people to test it out.

This one went over pretty well with my family. I was surprised. I found it a little dry, but I have a feeling that with more plays, I'd be more likely to remember to use my characters powers better. My sister in-law really enjoyed the cooperative aspect to the game.

I'm not interested in Shadows Over Camelot though.

Looking forward to:
This is the game that brought me to the geek. I was a little disappointed to find that the 2nd edition was no where to be found. I'm eagerly waiting for the new edition due later this year. I am definitly getting this one.

Considering:
I really like the sounds of this one. I like the idea of a higher level of long term strategy, money management, and the really huge board. The train theme might help get it on the table. I'm just not sure I have a table big enough to play it on...

With the bidding, can you even play 2 player?

This one intrigues me. I grew up playing Monopoly and used to play it for hours (although I can't remember ever finishing a game...). I like the idea of a money management game that has more strategy to it, and this one sounds like a lot of fun (sorry for the Monopoly comparison....)

Again, how does it play with 2?

Considering:
I've played Risk with my wife before, and she's very good (and enjoys it as much as could be expected). I'm looking for something with strategy and this sounds like it's fun, and 2 players. She's concerned with the Stratego type play, thinking she's not very good at that sort of thing. I think she would be.

Is this one too far out of my pattern so far?

Considering:
I spent a fair amount of time playing D&D growing up and still enjoy fantasy. I never got to play Talisman but wish I had. Descent doesn't sound too great to me since I know I'd probably end up being the game master.

On one hand, I'm not too thrilled with the collectible like release of the expansions, but I do like the potential of extending the usefullness of the game if you like it.

This one has the added bonus of being able to play solo. I want some adventure...
