Hi folks,

I haven't made a list before - I've mostly just trolled other people's lists and thrown the odd comment here and there. I wanted to make up my own list, but after much deliberation I decided to make my first list a personal one. This is a list of the games that I had grown up with - and although it is certainly not complete, each game holds a certain place in my heart in its own right.

To those of you who enjoy this type of list, please read on and comment as you will. Even fire over some geekmail if ya like. BGG.com is my #1 vistied site, and I thank the admins and all of you great members for your advice and wisdom in the huge world of boardgames.

Cheers!

Of some of the earliest games I remember, Clue is one of them. What I used to like about clue was that every game would be different, and that it wasn't just about 'rolling and moving'. Although I haven't played it in a long time, it is definately one of the board games of my youth that I remember fondly.

I'll be honest - nowadays, I have a real dislike for this title. To me, this is the game that stops people from accepting 'boardgames' as an exciting hobby - it's full of all of the 'bad stuff' - player elimination, money, greed, property, ack. When I was younger, however, this was one of the few games that I would play with my family and friends. A classic story of mine is when my entreprenurial friend decided to buy the bank out of 1-dollar bills and made people fight amongst themselves for change. Ahhhh, Monopoly. I rank it a 1 nowadays, and I believe it belongs there.. Not because it's 'broken', per se, but mostly because it can ruin the public's view of boardgaming in general. I firmly believe that the harsh undertones of this game scares people away from some truly great titles out there.

I remember playing this game with a friend of mine, who, when I was younger, seemed to have a great selection of interesting games. We used to play this until the elastics snapped, and I'll bet he's still finding little blue and red discs all over his house.

The same friend was the one who introduced me to Crokinole. Again, it was a game that was new to me, but enjoyed it at the time. Nowadays I don't have the same inclination, but I certainly remember the oversized crokinole table in his parents' livingroom.

I remember playing many games in the 80's. I was younger than some gamer's at the time - didn't really have the kind of mental capacity to appreicate the big wargames. Thunder Road was a title that basically embodied my early appreciation for games - good bits, a bit of conflict, and a board that constantly changed.

When I was about 15, after having playing some of these titles and feeling creative, I'd often build my own kind of board games. They were primarily roll-n-move type of games, but creative nonetheless. Up until the age of about 12, these were the kinds of games that I was most interested in.

Getting older, getting in to highschool and so on, prompted a bit more of a 'conflict-based' style of play. At that age, and with what we had access to, Risk was a good game to play. We used to get together on the weekends, get all spun out on soft drinks, and destroy each other. As you do.

Now I'm not sure, but I feel fairly certain that it was MB's 'Master Series' of board games that really sparked something in me. It was probably the map, or maybe the complex rules, or maybe even the miniatures - whatever it was, 'Shogun' was a top title back then. Once 'Shogun' was found, 'Risk' quickly fell into the background as it just was not complex enough for us.

Growing up, there were only a few party games that would ever make the table with my family and friends. Balderdash was easily the most successful. It seems as though some folks aren't fond of this game, but it truly was a hit when I was younger. It was the kind of game that we'd play at the cottage with our summer-seasonal friends, or around the dinner table just after a big feast at home. It was the kind of game we'd play, not just to win, but to play and have a good time. Just about every game would deteriorate into 'who can make the silliest answers', and we enjoyed it to bits.

In university, Axis and Allies was the game of choice. My friend used to insist on a specific, special map and rules for the game, which made it so much more complex than it needed to be. However, we used to get all drunk on cheap beer and smoke cigarettes well into the night within our dorm rooms, discussing how we could annhiliate our enemies through keen strategy and negotiation.

Of course, there were the card games. Living and growing up in Ontario, Canada means that you often spend several days up at cottages. Cribbage had a special place in these kinds of days. You could let the whole day pass by, playing cribbage on the deck in the sunshine, and life was just perfect. Cribbage is still one of my favourite card games.

..and then we come to the latest revelation. My most recent revival of boardgaming came in the summer of 2004, when I found a boardgame store near Manchester, UK while on a vacation there. It had been a while since I considered boardgames - at that time, I was most interested in video games and movies. Still, I entered the shop and after asking the clerk what game he recommended, the name 'Settlers of Catan' came about. I think just about everyone agrees that when you first hear of the name of the game you are almost in disbelief.. "That's the name? Where the heck is Catan?"
Regardless, it was only a few hours later that I found myself first logging on to BGG.com to research this title. Of course, in the summer of '04, Catan was huge - it was still game #1. I went back to the store after reading so many good reviews, played it to death, and it wasn't long before the doors opened and I was looking for more..

I had purchased several games from that shop after that, including Starfarers of Catan, Goa, and Chrononauts, but it was Power Grid that brought me into the next level. I realized that games had certainly evolved from when I was younger, and I was eager to get into more games. When I bought Power Grid, I was back at home in Ontario, and couldn't wait to unleash my new-found-hobby on my friends. It was the perfect game. Since then, all of those friends now come over to check out my newest titles and we play together regularly.

Of course, what is a list without Puerto Rico? PR was a game I bought because of the BGG-hype, and my faith in its users was solidified. So many great comments were made on it, that it was bound to be a hit. The users were right. PR has since become the kind of game that I am happy to introduce to friends who may have heard of my games collection and are intringued to play something new. It always seems to be a hit.

Runebound represents my newer leap into RPG-based games. When I was young, my friends and I used to enjoy playing D&D, and Runebound helps to recreate that kind of world without all of the dice, pencils, erasing, and bookkeeping. It's also the game that I've felt compelled to improve upon by purchasing gemstones for the experience tokens, tiny boxes for players' items, and by painting the miniatures.

In this list, Wallenstein is the game that represents my desire to collect great games after thorough research and hunting. It is the title that doesn't disappoint, and I love to see the faces on friends who have never seen anything like it before. I remember when I first bought it, my friends were amazed at this game.. A tower for tiny squares, strange rules, and all in German. Amazing!
