I just love a good empire building and conquest game! Expanding your territory and building up your forces, diplomacy, trading, negotiating, and ultimately just putting the hurt on your friends lights a fire under me! Whether it's in outer space or a fantasy setting or in ancient times, I just love it!

Unfortunately, not all empire building games are well made. I'm looking for games that are multi-player and fun. Strategic decisions are important, randomness okay, and ganging up on the leader of course is a key element. Finishable in a day (maybe two) is also important and complexity is not an issue. I've been burned and disappointed a few times so I need your help. This list has the games I'm currently considering. Feel free to add to the list if there's one I missed you think I'd like or at least should be considered.

In my opinion, the greatest empire building games of all time are:
*Civilization/Advanced Civilization (length is a problem though!)
*Twilight Imperium (2nd edition)
*Kings & Things
*Air Baron (believe it or not!)
*Diplomacy (more of a negotiation game, but fits)

The runners up are:
*Shogun/Samurai Swords (can become too static as players who attack become weaker so they just sit there).
*Empires of the Ancient World (Age of Renaissance light and a lot cleaner, but is missing something....)
*Barbarian Kings (Although haven't played in a long time since the one game where the rules didn't tell us how to resolve a three way contest for a space!)

What I don't like as much and why:
*Age of Renaissance (Only one strategy - get seaworthy vessels and ocean navigation or you're toast. Feels like a whack-em card game a la Nuclear War. Unbalanced powers. Lots of other problems.)
*History of the World (You don't build up anything, you just attack and attack. Also your fate is in the hands of every other player and their bad choices. Diminishing replay value.)
*Sid Meier's Civilization: The Game (No fun at all. Only one strategy. I'd rather play something else than figure out rules tweaks.)
*Conquest of the Empire ( Again needs serious tweaking or game is unbalanced and catapults too important)
*Risk (only one strategy and diminishing replay value. But I'm curious about other versions - LOTR, edition Napoleon, Castle Risk, Risk 2210)
*Stellar Conquest (nobody wanted to play again after Master of Orion came out on computer!)
*Axis&Allies (really just a two player game and unbalanced)

Others worth mentioning:
*Buck Rogers Battle for the 25th Century (worth noting as I owned it but traded it without playing. Comments seem to suggest it's unbalanced and has diminishing replay value)
*Machiavelli (I own it but haven't played it. I keep falling asleep reading the rules!)
*Shogun (AH version) (I own but haven't played - is it similar to Samurai Swords?)

Out of the running:
*Eagle Games games [Age of Imperialism, Attack!, Napoleon in Europe] (I don't want to be a playtester. My bad experience with Sid Meier's Civilization and everything I've read tells me to avoid these.)
*Supremacy (People absolutely love it or hate it. Price of entry awful high for something so polarizing.)
*Battlemist (doubtful it would ever be played if Kings&Things and Twilight Imperium are already options)

Is Successors an empire building game, or is it just a 4-player Hannibal? Comments seem mostly favorable but say the game is chaotic. I will probably still want it even if it's not a perfect empire building category fit as I just love the theme.

Have you tried this one? It's playable in only two hours; I don't know i'f you're looking for something meatier or not though.

Just in case you know nothing about it, in this game, you build an empire up, and then when you feel it is past its prime, you build another empire and watch the previous one fall out of existence. This ends up creating a game where you build generally around 2 to 3 empires per game, each of which rises up, and eventually declines down to nothing. The coolest part to me is that each has it's own unique abilities, so everyone's empires have varying powers.

It's definitely worth giving a try if you haven't had the opportunity to play it yet!

A game of interstellar raiding and plunder for two players (the Viking age tranposed to Space Opera).
Using a unique system of 12 mapboard tiles to represent the various star systems in the Outrim sector, it captures the tense uncertainty and the sudden, flashing battles of an interstellar war. Units represented include Viking cruisers, sloops, and fighters, Federate and local frigates, battle-cruisers, and patrol boats, as well as raiding detachments, security forces, grav-armor units, specialized warfare pods, and conventional low-tech armed forces ranging from atmospheric aircraft to stone-age hordes.

A game about the consolidating of power in the Holy Roman Empire in 1452. Players attempt to gain victory points through a varitey of sources. In a system that has similarities to El Grande, players have a limited number of actions each turn to place resources into territories on a map. Going beyond El Grande, the game provides several different types of resources to manage and also gives players several different ways of undermining other players' positions.
