You can help us build a better game night! Allow me to explain:

My mother is a librarian in the small, rural Pennsylvania town where I was raised. Recently, she asked me and my (far more into gaming) boyfriend what to do about the library's game collection. They had been trying to create a "Family Game Night" event for some time, but it never seemed to take off. She guesses this may be partly because the patrons pretty much have to bring their own games--the library itself only owns the trusty "Family Seven + Mancala", Candyland, Monopoly, Parcheesi, and a copy of Trivial Pursuit: Star Wars Edition. Clearly insufficient.

First of all, I'm going to recommend that she be sure that they do actually have halfway-decent copies of the old standards, including things such as Go, a cribbage board, some decks of cards, a set or two of dominoes, Scrabble, maybe Risk, and a regular version of Trivial Pursuit. Such absences are easily remedied by a trip to Conglomerated ToyCo.

What she's really interested in is "new" games, that is, games that you don't really hear about until you have a use for this website. To that end, Tim & I have sat down and come up with a top 10 for the library. We struggled to limit ourselves to 10 because of the expense involved. More can be added later, of course, but we thought this would make a stimulating core which would justify future investment. Currently, my understanding is that the games will NOT be leaving the building. Final notes to give you perspective: Tim's suggestion of War of the Ring was ultimately rejected because of 1)cost; 2)it takes a long time to play; and 3)it's really a two-player affair. One or two of those factors is okay, but all three is a bit much for a core collection. My suggestion of Hell Rail was panned because the title would simply be too provoking for the service area's taste.

Would you replace any of these games with different ones? Or, for that matter, does there need to be just one more on the list to make it perfect? I will be pointing her to this list (as well as this one ) as a reference, so please be frank in your evaluations! Now, in no particular order:

I have to admit, I've never actually played regular Carcassonne, but I have heard that the rules in H&G are simpler. I know that H&G is a very fun game, and Tim & I have had great success doing team playing with his 5-year-old niece. It's colorful, it's cool, here it is.

We busted this one out when we had a big weekend get-together with old college friends, and it was a huuuuuge success. We must have played at least four or five games of it, and were sternly informed to bring it back next time we visited. The cooperative play aspect is very appealing to the less competitive.

I notice you don't have any auction games listed. Perhaps one could be added?

I'd go for Ra because of attractive components, the simplicity of deciding what to bid, and the fact it works well with 3-5 players.

The rules may need a read through and then simple player aids made up, but this game plays with up to 30 people and it's somewhat ed-gich-mic-ational.

The game comes with cardboard tokens, but you could encourage people to make their own little matchbox ships too.

Furthermore, there's a specific American Revolution module, Rebel Seas, game ID: 15233. [q] Its 20 scenarios cover naval actions in American waters during the American War of Independence. They range from one-on-one frigate actions to grand fleet engagements with over 20 ships of the line on each side.[q]

A bit more "heavy" than the others I proposed I saw this one work rather well also with casual gamers. And it's certainly one that stands "the test of time" if that gaming evening become regular events and remains interesting for participants.

A lighter choice to fill the area control niche would be China.

The rules are simple and accessible to new players, the game itself is quite compact, it scales well from 2 to 5 players, plays quickly, and even has an optional variant for "deeper" play.

You can teach the rules to new players in one minute, it plays excellently with 2 or 4 players, it plays quickly, it's very beautiful, it's reasonably priced, it doesn't have two hundred little rolling parts to lose, it's durable, it offends nobody, and it's fun. What more could a library want in a game?

Another big draw for both gamers and non-gamers. The basic game, the expansions and the free to download scenarios create a wide variety of game day options. The name may put some people off, in the end it is the tongue in cheek gameplay that wins out.
