Grimwold's new-to-you geeklists are the highlight of my month on the 'geek. They motivate me to review the new games I've played (and recycle my entries as comments), and they allow me to read the thoughts of some of the most insightful 'geeks on new and classic games.

But the new-to-me list is inevitably full of first impressions. I'm interested in hearing how those games that seemed so great at the time stood up to multiple plays. Did you actually play them that much after the first month? Did a game you dismissed at the time turn out to be better in retrospect?

Add an entry with the same game you chose for the New to you Apr 11 geeklist. Link to your entry in that geeklist, then write down your thoughts on the game you chose a year on. If your impression of some of the other games you wrote up that month have changed, let us know about that too.

The big game that month was (still) Mansions of Madness - has it stood the test of time?

I'll be starting these lists mid-month, so we don't have to keep up with this list and Grimwold's (and several other monthly ones) all at the same time. You can subscribe to the announcement thread for reminders.

I bagged the coveted no. 2 spot in the list, just under Grimwold. But I've played none of these games again! What kind of a Cult of the Slow member am I?

This time last year I played four new games - two of them ones we own, and two belonging to another gaming friend.

The Resistance
Initial rating:
Current geek rating: 8
Plays in first 6 months: 3
Plays in next 6 months: 3

After playing this game (three times in one day) it went on my wishlist, but the price new to reward has meant we haven't bought it, but keep hoping to get it in trade! My friend brought it one further time, and we again played it three times, and I had just as much fun.

Stay Alive
Initial rating:
Current geek rating: 4
Plays in first 6 months: 13
Plays in next 6 months: 0

This was a car boot sale purchase that I bought for my children to play. I'm not that fond of it, but for about 4 months it was a regular hit, coming out several times a week in holidays. Luckily for me, in mid-August my son seemed to tire of it, and I haven't had to play it since. I'm keeping it for now, as it's not a bad little game for children, and they may come back to it.

Also played:
Isla Tetra
I had no desire to play this one again - went on way longer than the published box time, and although it had some nice ideas and was enjoyable enough to play once it hadn't been playtested enough and didn't work with the rules as written, and wasn't good enough for me to bother trying the designer's rewrites to see if they did fix it.

Wo ist Jack the Ripper
On the first playing I was left wondering why I had bothered - definitely wouldn't play this again.

My entry for last year NTY list

I played 3 new games on April last year.

The best one was WWII: BtB.
I've played it again only once. 2 weeks ago. The game is very good, but I'm still playing Paths of Glory, so that I can have new players for this one devil

The second game was 18MEX. One other play for it. so many 18XX to try that some are lost in time.

The other one was 7 Wonders that I didn't enjoyed. So I didn't played it no more.

Has not stood the test of time very well at all. I still get requests to play, but only by players who have not played it before.

Long setup times and the unevenness of the scenarios have pretty much killed this one for me.

Wow, I have actually replayed quite many games from this month!
Item for Geeklist "New to you Apr 11 => Best new boardgame"

Airlines Europe
I have never played the original Airlines nor Union Pacific so this game was really new to me. Still it felt like something between Ticket to Ride and Alhambra, even if a bit more complex than both; I did play it with my TtR-loving mother and she catched up quite fast. It's a game I own and am happy to own; the Airlines Europe: Flight Ban mini-espansion made it even better, if only a little bit.

Artus would be my choice for the best game this month if I had to choose now; I like it even more than I did after a few plays. I still think this is the most Knizian Kramer-Kiesling game I have ever played and I mean that as a compliment (of course). This is the other game here that I (proudly) own.

K2 is "One of the finest race games I have played in the last years", I wrote it back then. But even though I enjoyed my second play it felt I had seen everything the game could offer to me. Things changed with the expansion which is vastly superior to the original; now I do want to put my hand on both.

Firenze - Well, I have played the designer's gamer sweetheart Hansa Teutonica only once and that was enough. I have played Firenze twice and also I played it a few times on-line. It’s not as special as HT but it's more fun. I'm willing to replay it any time.

Pergamon - I think I like Stefan Dorra's games and Ralf zur Linde's game (Finca) more than I like Pergamon, even though it's an okay game. It just feels nothing special, not even after replays (unlike Finca) and some on-line plays.

Cable Car is better than Metro.

No replays since:
Cargo Noir

Here is my original entry to the geeklist: Item for Geeklist "New to you Apr 11 => Best new boardgame"

Dominion: Seaside (Played 12 times since April 2011) - Not only has this game stood the test of time, it has helped rocket Dominion near the top of my favorite games list. This is still my favorite of all the Dominion expansions (excluding small box ones I haven't played.) In fact I even named this expansion my favorite New to Me game of 2011. Superb expansion!

Magical Athlete (Played 9 times since April 2011) - One of the biggest surprises of 2011. I knew nothing about it going in, and now it is a favorite that I bring to the table all the time. Sure the game is silly. Yes the basic mechanism is simply roll-and-move. Yet somehow the combination of those basic elements with the special powers turns this into a hilarious game that I always enjoy.

Trivial Pursuit: Team (Played 2 times since April 2011) - I like what they did here, and it is a game that will stay in my collection (at least until we've played all the games that come in the box.) Sure it isn't one of the most beloved party games amongst my friends, but it makes people think and can be played with huge groups which is rare.

SmileyFace (Played 1 time since April 2011) - I'm not sure how much this one will be played in the future. While the art is cute, the game is positively vicious. I don't really think it suits my family very well, so I feel like the game could leave my collection without regret.

April last year was a relatively light month - and full of games I really don't have a good excuse for not having played more often.

Luna is still quite good in my opinion, and considering I've become more enchanted with Stefan Feld's work of late (see also: The Castles of Burgundy), that's not too surprising. I've mostly been keeping up with Luna on Yucata, although those plays take forever to get through. We did get it back to the table once more last year, but it's been about 6 months. I'm ready for another go.

Odin's Ravens just didn't click well with us, but it's lying in wait for another big 2-player game night for my partner and I, perhaps.

Both of the Carcassonne expansions from that month - Abbey & Mayor and Der Tunnel could make it to the table any time we pull out the base game, but that's been too long, I admit. The former is much more likely, as I really enjoyed it.

13 new games last April (and one expansion).

Let's get the one plays and done out of the way:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Mystery at Hogwarts Game
Shadows in the Forest (may play again just because of it's uniqueness, but not in a hurry)
Nightfall

Haven't replayed, but would if asked:
The Mines of Zavandor
Dragonmaster

Now let's get to those that need more of a write up.

Travel Blog has been played one more time since. I've lowered the rating from a 6.5 to a 6 and I'm not trying to get it to the table, but wold play it if asked (I may even take it to a convention in June).

Mord im Arosa was initially rated a 7, but I've lowered to a 6 despite 5 more plays of it as recent as last month. I'm sure it will get continued to be pulled out, there's just a point in the game where it can (and does) stale when only the leader is trying to end the game while everyone else is trying to prolong the game in order to improve their position. So, it can take longer then I'd like it too. AGAIN, I'll still play it and expect to continue playing it though.

Tinners' Trail I've reduced from a 7.4 to a 7 today. Why? Because, while I enjoyed the game, I can't say there's been a burning desire to get it to the table again. I should rectify that at some point though.

Wongar has only hit the table one more time since, but last month it came up several times as a possible game to play. So, I expect it to get a couple plays this summer.

Pergamon I wanted to be more then it is and played it 3 more times. But, it's just not that great of a game, it's too limited and simple. I have a few of my daughter's Venture Crew coming over this Friday to learn what board gaming is about, so this game may work well for that type of setting, just not a 'regular' thing for 'gamers'.

BITS has been played 4 more times, I think I still like FITS better, but am willing to play either one when asked.

I have now bought two expansions and 2 promos for Rattus. Still not a FAVORITE of mine, but a game I will normally play and enjoy. It's gotten 7 more plays and will probably be a dime by end of summer.

My selection for the 'Best' last year was Sun, Sea & Sand . While it actually hasn't gotten as much repeat play as some others on this list, with only 2 more plays (for a total of 4). It's still my favorite of this is. There just seems to be a mental block for some people with this game, so it doesn't fit well with a wide range of gamers. I look forward though to many more plays of this and just brought it up form a 8.6 to a 9.0

In order of the original entry

Lost Valley
Plays since: 0

Like many games, needs a bit of tweaking to work with two players. Haven't really done that yet, so hasn't hit the table again.

Vom Kap bis Kairo
Plays since: 0

I tend to bring small games like this on trips, which is where I played this originally a year ago. Heading on another trip in a few days, and this might again be brought along.

Waldmeister
Plays since: 0

In my previous comments, I mentioned the need to tweak this to improve the card play. I haven't done so yet, but I have just ordered English cards from Artscow, which will facilitate the process.

Survive: Escape from Atlantis!
Plays since: 0

These final three games were all played during a visit to Scott Nicholson's house. I don't own them, and never will, so they really had no chance of standing the test of time.

Mansions of Madness

Last year's entry.

Last April was another very small crop of new games for me.

Dominant Species: 3 plays last April, 3 plays since. This game is in my top 10. We routinely finish the game in 2 hours (we remove 5 cards from the deck). It's been 8 months since we've played. I need to fix that.

Nightfall: 8 plays last April, 0 plays since. Well, shit. Last year I raved about Nightfall being the best deckbuilding game I've played since Dominion and I stand by that. It feels unique. The combos and chains are interesting, the way you draft a couple of stacks that are only available to you lets you personalize things a bit. The aggression in the game is cool. The only thing I don't like is the tiebreaker. Unfortunately, there are better 2-player card games out there, and when we're 3+ we almost never reach for a card game. Like it. Want to play it. Who knows?

First Train to Nuremburg: 2 plays last April, 2 plays since. A fine game that got lost in the shuffle. I like it, but didn't love it enough to push it to the table. I recently traded it for Helvetia, which I then traded for Lords of Waterdeep.

All in all it was a decent month for new games. It's not every month I get a new classic like Dominant Species.

Last year I chose MoM as the best game of the month, and I haven't changed my mind, even though we haven't played it very often since. I did get the PoD expansions because I really like the game. We really need to get this to the table again.

Nightfall got another try with one of the expansions... It isn't for me, I don't like all the stuff you have to keep in mind to do well.

Die Säulen der Erde: das Kartenspiel got a place in our collection. It doesn't get played too often anymore, but it's a nice game.

I never got around to trying A Game of Thrones: The Card Game again... I'm not sure if I like the LCG thing, I get frustrated with the amount of keywords they use on the cards.

Get Nuts just didn't get played again. We don't own it, and I'd ask for something else if it would ever be suggested.

I don't really remember anything about L'Aventure c'est dur. Enough said.

Keltis: Der Weg der Steine Mitbringspiel and Einfach Genial: Das Kartenspieldidn't get played again, but I wouldn't mind.

Thurn and Taxis: Power and Glory didn't get another play either, though it is a pretty good version of TuT. I think it's because we know the rules to the base game better (there are some changes) and it's just easier to play the base game.

Puerto Rico: Expansion I – New Buildings and Small World: Necromancer Island didn't get played again. PR just didn't hit the table at all (there's too many other games we want to play more), and necromancer island just doesn't work all that great.

Fun to add every now and then, but I think I prefer the base game with the expansions mixed in.

Wow... 7 new to me games last year and I've only played one of them since. Of course I've only wanted to play two of them again so I guess that's alright laugh

Only one truncated play of Tammany Hall at a local Con was enough to put it at the top of both this list and my wishlist (I really like qwirky area control games). Unfortunately when I got home I learned I had a grail game in my sights and have not been able to track down a copy for anything I'm willing to trade or a price I felt right paying. Just this month I saw good news that Tammany Hall has been picked up by a new publisher and will be appearing in a kickstarter campaign in the very near future! Count me in!!!

Reef Encounter is only second to Torres on my list of game I really need to focus on gettting to the table more. Both are a bit explainy and require players to gain some experience to really enjoy... and those seem to be factors against a game in my current group (along with not scaling to 5 players). My one additional play in the past year was enough to bump my rating from 7 to 7.5 and it could certainly rise as I get to explore this quite deep game some more... so it has stood the test of time as a game I want to play more... but not yet as a game in my regular rotation.

Played and am not seeking to play again:
Summoner Wars - An interesting mix of hand management and tactical movement... but if I'm playing a dedicated two player game its usually one of my beloved (and dusty) abstract games.

London - Felt like complicated St. Petersburg with opaque scoring at the time. Now I have Last Will which feels a bit like London light with some worker placement instead of that silly map in the middle. I'd play London if offered but I certainly don't need it in my collection.

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game - An LCG that seems to play best with more that 2 players? That seems pretty rare and there are a number of players in my group that are quite taken with this and even have started a league... so perhaps I'll get a chance to play again. But with this kind of game I really would have the most fun makign my own deck and my gaming budget really can't support an addiction to LCGs...

Trollhalla - Set collection where you have pretty limited control over what you're collecting... Meh.

A rare additon to my actively avoid list:
Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot - My comment from last year remains my exact feeling about this game: "I don't quite get Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot. It should be a fast easy filler... but the endless rules arguments and natural lack of people paying attention make our group's sessions into some long un-fun games. Add to that the totally random nature of the outcome and you have a game I'm really not interested in playing again."

A year ago this month, I'd played six new games and one expansion. As is now usual, I'll list 'em in decreasing order of current enthusiasm (though with all the games ahead of the expansion.) Amusingly, that happens to be nearly the same as my ordering from a year ago: my subjective tie-breaker between the first two titles has flipped over the course of the year, though there's no other change.

1860 -- (1 play a year ago; none since) _8.5_ (up one place)
(images by Werbaer & jrebelo)

After eleven months' reflection, this one has become ascendant. Not by a lot, mind you; but it taunts me from the shelf in a way that Pampas Railroads doesn't. I'd given it the More dials and levers than one can shake a stick at award a year ago; that's some of the appeal. But it's also possible that Pampas has decreased a tiny bit in my estimation because of the ascendancy of South African Railroads.

Pampas Railroads -- (1 play a year ago; none since) _8.5_ (down one place)
(images by John Bohrer & clearclaw)

I'd given this the Winsome-appropriate (Tie) Least impressive game presentation award. Of course, it's perhaps useful to know that I prefer that relatively unimpressive presentation to most of the Winsome reprints I've experienced. Both of these first two games are ones I'd be delighted to get back to the table.

Steam -- (2 plays a year ago; 1 since) _7.7_ (no change)
(images by AlexYeager & reeboohin)

I'd given this a Greatest feeling of clockwork inevitability a year ago. Some of that was experiencing the game with the 2p variant board. Some of that was having a history with my opponents. It's a nice game, but a paper tiger compared to Age of Steam.

Final Frontier -- (1 play a year ago; 1 since) _7_ (no change)
(both images by TheRook)

I'd given this a So what does this chit mean? award. The minimalist presentation has all the rawness of a Winsome title, without inheriting the clarity. But the game is quite amusing - particularly when one has come to an accommodation with all the details.

PanzerZug -- (1 play a year ago; 1 since) _6.3_ (no change)
(both images by Monkie)

Since I'd failed to wear my Viking Helmet (you'll need to read the rulebook to understand that reference. And no; they're not online. Don't even think of going there.) I gave this a Where's the mead? award. It's pretty random - in a way that I've not come to expect from Winsome (but was certainly part of its historic output.)

Paranoia -- (1 play a year ago; none since) _5_ (no change)
(images by JackRandom & redjack11)

I gave this a So, will this end anytime soon? award, and noted "it was definitely faster than the recovery from my ACL surgery." Despite the fact that the game ambiance was excellent, it didn't demonstrate a lot of interest in terminating. I suspect I would have been far more amused by it thirty five years ago.

The one expansion was:

Railways of England and Wales -- (1 play a year ago; none since) _7.3_ (down a bit in rating)
(images by EndersGame & Utumo)

A year later, I still have no clue about the stock-holding game that came in the box. I've still only ever considered it as a Railroad Tycoon expansion map. And while that's a fine thing, I find Age of Steam > Steam > Railroad Tycoon in most situations.

As usual, thanks to my youngsters; the no-longer-on-Friday Lunch folk; the I've been diced gang; and the BAP attenders for some great games.

This game has not stood the test of time. A year ago I said:
Quote:
I like this game. It's very puzzle-like, but at the same time it is quite fun. It's also easy to get my wife to play it because it doesn't take a lot of effort. We can play it in our living room on couches--in fact, you could play it just about anywhere. It would definitely be a great car game.
After maybe one more play, the novelty of the word puzzle wore off and it started to feel a bit like work. Then my wife announced that she didn't want to ever play it again. I traded it away. I would still happily play it again, maybe on a long car trip, but alas, my wife would not.

I haven't played High Frontier again since a year ago. I still love the board, and I like the idea. But the game needs a great deal of work (rule-reading, trial and error) to get to the level where it would become a fun game, and I can't see that realistically happening. Too many other things I'd rather play. I know there's a good game in there, and a really interesting thing to try to simulate, but not something I'm getting to the table so I have put it up for trade.

I haven't played The Castles of Burgundy again either: it's certainly one I'd be happy to return to.

I played Taluva once more since April, I enjoyed it both times and it's a good game for quick-playing abstract-- I'd like to play more.

Didn't play Fast Flowing Forest Fellers again, and wouldn't really be seeking it out.

Woop! Been messing around on these Geek lists for a whole year now, so I can finally put...

Item for Geeklist "New to you Apr 11 => Best new boardgame"

Feels like I've come of age

Anyhoo, this time last year I was singing the praises of both of my new games - Stone Age and Endeavor. A year on I'm happy to say I'm still doing the same and it's a tough to call to pick a favourite.

I'm going to go with Stone Age though, as I've played it to death and still love it. We've played 10 more games with the physical version, but I can add a mass of online plays to that total via Yucata. Funnily enough, it hasn't been a huge hit with my regular group - I'm not sure any of them would ask for it to hit the table, while Zoe doesn't care for it much at all (although that may be because my extra online experience leaves her at quite a disadvantage). That said, if I set it up, no one moans either (and believe me, when they don't like a game, they do!). I think some people write Stone Age off too soon as a simple worker placement game - probably because of the dice - but that's not doing it justice: a good Stone Age player will rip a bad one a new hole and a game between several good players is nasty, tight and tense affair. For me, it's a great game and still a 9.

Endeavor has also hit the table 10 more times since that initial April game and has proved a hit with everyone that's played it. I think that if our group voted on their favourite game, this would be on every list - I'm not sure any other one would. It seems to have everything: it plays well, and fast, with up to five; there's luck, player interaction, worker placement - and very little downtime as well. Great stuff and, as predicted then, it has gone up from an 8 to a 9.

I also talked about two games I had played on Yucata; Bangkok Klongs and Maori. The former I hadn't found myself wanting to replay then, and then hasn't changed.

Maori was a different matter though - I didn't play any ranking games on Yucata, but enjoyed it enough to play some more friendlies online. It's a clever, tricky little game that burns the brain a lot more than the cute board and bits let on. Luckily a physical copy came up in a sale in the UK and I got it for £7.99 at Christmas. It has hit the table five times since, my other half really likes it and I can see it being a keeper. I only rate it a 7, but for me a 7 is the right side of the line and in real terms way ahead of a 6.

Well, we played Topple twice a year ago and then brought it out back (why?) on Thanksgiving weekend, or thereabouts. I do not care for the game.

But that's better than Labyrinth Treasure Hunt did. It didn't come back out at all. Maybe the kids will appreciate it more in a year or two. Maybe not. It wasn't all that special, either.

Colosseum was my best new game last April. I loved the components and game play. Since then I have only played it once more. It is not my own so I have less opportunity to play it than if it were my own.

Rating Last year
Plays since then = 1
I would love to play it again and feel I would rate it just as high.

This struck me as somewhat mediocre. It is also not mine so I have not had much more opportunity with it butreally don't mind.
Rating Last year
Plays since then = 1
I can take it or leave it much as I felt then.

I enjoyed what this little Power Grid Promo Card brought to the game but have never had opportunity to play with it again
Rating Last year
Plays since then = 0

I have never had a chance to play this again and don't feel I am missing anything. i think I prefer the little filler Coloretto.
Rating Last year
Plays since then = 0
If a chance came that I could play this I probably would, but I wouldn't miss it if I did not play it either.

Wow! Interesting.

Our game group must have been going through a wave of cult of the new last year. I played a lot of new to me games a year ago. But I haven't played any of them since. So I really can't report on whether any of them have stood the test of time.

Phantoms vs Phantoms - Played once. I did just trade for a copy of this. So future plays are more likely.
La Città - Played it twice in April, but not since. It was okay.
Kaigan - Played once. Without looking up how it's played, I barely remember it. I remember exactly where I was sitting when I played it though.
Jamaica - Played once. I don't even remember whose house I was sitting in, though I have a strong guess.
Gulo Gulo - Played once with a friend and his young son. Haven't had the opportunity or reason to play it again. Good game for the very young croud.
DVONN - Played once, on the same friend's deck. Good abstract. But abstracts rarely make a showing in our game group or when playing at home.
Dreidel - Played once ... yes, in April. My son made a Star Wars R2D2 dreidel from a craft book. So we played. This didn't make a second appearance during the holidays. It seems like the game's sole purpose is to keep children busy for hours doing nothing. Our children can do that fine on their own without this game.
Biblios - Played once. I can't say I didn't like it. It's hard to say since there was an attempt to break the game going on.
Automobile - Played once. I wasn't inspired by anything in the game. But I'd play it again if it ever shows its face again.

Here is my link.

I played 5 new to me games that month, and this was my favorite. I have played this one twice since. I have also played Crows one time since. These two were the best two from that month, and I am looking forward to playing them again.

I have not played SET, Loopin' Louie, or Macao since.

Two further plays of Lords of Vegas, and its still pretty much Liberace does T&E.

Trappings of area control and card management, but pretty flashy and trashy with it. Both plays have been good fun. Won't get played very regularly, but still a keeper. Rating 8.5 -> 8

Pucket/Le Passe-Trap now has a new nameLe Passe-Trappe , but I still have great fun with this. I bring it out every time non-gamers are in the house, and it goes down a storm. Over in a flash, and everyone wants a second go. Don't even bother to log my plays. Rating stays at 8.5.

Last spring my wife was working a crazy schedule and that rather limited the opportunities for any gaming, never mind new games. But we did play 2. My entry from a year ago is here.

1. Hive - played 4 times last April, 3 times since.

Technically, I first played this in 2006, but it was one game while waiting for something and we did not even remember it. So I did not really learn how to play until last April, after picking up the Carbon edition. I thought this would be a bigger hit than it was. We played it a few times last April, a few times more in May ... and then not since. Despite its advantages in portability and nice pieces and short play time, other games come out first - Parade became our go-to short game for the summer. And whenever I've suggested Hive, it brought a disinterested shrug from my wife, who is the queen bee of abstracts in our house.

Thinking about it now, it may be a game that we did not find the depth to pull us in and make it intriguing (possibly I wasn't a good enough opponent?). In any case, it languishes. We didn't even touch the Ladybug or Mosquito.

2. Free Trader - played 3 times last April, not played since.

With my wife's crazy schedule, I was looking for a gaming fix and print and played Free Trader. It is a neat little game, buying-traveling-selling game, where you need to make enough to make the ship payments. I failed to do so the first game, but both subsequent games I made my payments with cash to spare. So it is not really a game with a year later on its mind. Play it once or twice, then you can put it away until a rainy day when you want something simple to occupy you for half an hour. I know there is a harder version, but when I want a harder game, I go to Pocket Civ.
