This is a list of the longest gaming sessions I have ever played.

Most of them were over 10 years ago, as I was in college at the time, and had a lot more time for this kind of thing. I have put them in order of longest sessions (which include multiple game sessions if no other games were played in between and they happened on consecutive days with few other distractions.) You will understand from my descriptions. I stopped at 16 hours because it spreads out significantly after that. If I went down to 6 hours (or even 10), I would probably need at least 50 spots on the list and my memories would not be very clear.

The fact that it is possible to play one game for 7 days straight is a testament to the quality of the game - in my opinion.

I had to leave roleplaying out of this one for the most part. Obviously because roleplaying games are not a focus of this site. However, for the record, the only roleplaying game that would have made this list is Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay : The Enemy Within Campaign through Death on the Reik, which would have come in at #2 with a 5 day session interrupted only by sleep in the summer of 1990.

I have made this list public, so please add to the list if you have excellent comparable experiences, or if you have beaten (what I suspect could be) our mighty (crazy) 7 day record.

1991 - 7 days

This is the longest game session in my history of gaming. We played this game for 7 days straight. We got up around noon every day, played until 8 to 10 pm every night. Drank beer until 2 am or so, then got up the next day and did it again. As a testament to our true geekness, we were in Amsterdam staying with a friend for a month and this is how we chose to spend one of our 4 weeks. It was the most fabulous of roleplaying experiences ever. The scenario was designed by the gamemaster each night while the rest of us were getting drunk, as the gamemaster was a non-drinker.

The game culminated with 2 of the 4 players surviving and ultimately completing the grand quest. One of the players ended up dragging the unconscious body of the other survivor out of the dungeon, saving the world, and making them both famous heroes and very rich.

This is by far the best roleplaying experience in my history of gaming.

My British friend (lost touch with him unfortunately) Dave Hall and I decided to play the entire base set of Space Hulk missions in one go. The stipulation was that each player was to play the Marines until they won the mission, then it would switch until the other beat the mission as well. Then we would go on to the next mission.

I don't remember exactly how far we got, but I think we completed at least one campaign and started the next before we got too tired and quit.

We found a couple of significantly broken missions during that session. But you can always play different missions, so it doesn't affect my rating of the game.

With the same friend, we played Fury of Dracula for 21 hours straight as a two player game. What we found out is that the Dracula player will always win if the lowest victory condition (6 vampires) is allowed.

From that point forward, we added two house rules.

1) The Dracula player must kill at least one hunter, or turn him into a vampire.

2) Night or Day in combat is decided by the attacking player. (I mean really, is Dracula going to launch and all out assault on a vampire hunter at high noon? Will a vampire hunter choose to make his attack on Dracula at midnight?)

1991 - 20 hours

We played one session over a Saturday and Sunday with 7 players which lasted 20 hours. All of us knew the game pretty well, and were very competetive. For the most part, every player was in the game until the last few hours of the second day. We started at about noon on Saturday, played until about 10 pm. Drank much beer. Then got up at about noon on Sunday, continued our game, and finished with the final point counts and game cleanup about 10 pm Sunday night.

The youngest player of our group at the time was 16 years old and he won the game by a nose. The age range was 16 - 20 years old at the time.

2000 - 18 hours - no sleep

We played about 15 games in a row for this session. Because it is a simple Car Wars type game, yet has plenty of action - I got obsessive about this game, so I have modified matchbox cars with mounted machine guns, tire spikes, grenade launchers, ramming spikes, etc.

We used the extra upgrade counters and had a system for winning them based on the races, so we played a campaign of sorts.

My roommate went to bed just as we started. He was amazed to see us still playing when he went to work in the morning. He was even more amazed when we were still playing when he got home from work.

We played two 4 player games with the Mega Mania expansion. The second one was such a long game that we never played with 4 players again, but it was a riot. Pun intended.

I really can't remeber how many hours we dumped into a StarFire campaign years ago. Over 100 I'm sure.

72 hours. 1st week we played 36 hours (2 players), next three weeks we played the other 36 hours. But after 4 weeks, the game grew dusty and we had other games to play. So we ended it. It was halfway through the 2nd WW, but probably only 1/3 of the playing time (since later in the war more and more counters appear). Had a great time!

15 hours

We were on summer vacation on Elba island back in '89, and during breakfast at 07:30 a.m. this guy took this game out and pronunced the fatal words: "this is new, do you want to try it?". I knew the game, had a basic knoledge of the rules so I started to read them, in the meantime all the others guy woke up and at 11:00 a.m. we started a 7 players game "just to see how it plays", nobody had ever played AC and for 3 it was the first serious boardgame ever. At 03:30 p.m. we cooked some "fagiulata" and played as we ate, at 07:30 p.m. the other guys went back from the sea and were rather surprised to see that we were still playing, we played 2 more hours, then went out to disco, we resumed play at 10:00 a.m. the morning after and finished at 03:00. One of the inexperienced players won, and all of us had an hell of fun.
