For those who want to skim through and see my reviews, here is a list of all of them, with a link to the BGG and (if applicable) GFBR pages.

The "Overall" score is not an average or amalgam of the subscores. Instead, it's a look at how fun the game is to play. It's a measure of expected enjoyment, and thus differs from the BGG scale (which is more focused on desire to play).

The "Spite" score is a measure of the availability of actions that do more to harm an opponent than to help you. In other words, how much of a "take that" element does the game have? And unlike the other scores, it is a quantitative rather than qualitative measure.

Finally, after compiling this list, I was struck by how my views of boardgaming and how my tastes have changed. My earliest reviews were a little inflated. While I chalk that up to enthusiasm with the hobby in general, I've tried to note corrections as experience has informed them.

Feel free to GeekMail me with questions, concurrences, or disagreements.

. As a cooperative game, I want there to be rising tension. I want that “we could lose at any moment!” feeling to stay with me until the last enemy is defeated. But 12 Realms doesn’t do that. It has wild tension in the beginning; the early game is a flurry of activity. But, once subsided, the game plods along and comes to an unremarkable conclusion. As a result, it lacks the constant excitement necessary to keep cooperative games interesting.

7 Wonders is FUN. Logistically, it caters to small and large groups but doesn’t have a long play time. It’s simple to learn, but immensely replayable. And, you get that feeling of accomplishment that attends any good civilization game. It works well in crowds and with families. I’ve enjoyed every play of 7 Wonders and it is very deserving of the Meeple’s Choice Award.

. Duel is utterly fabulous. For two players, it’s an improvement over its predecessor in every way. It accomplishes the same feeling of drafting cards while being more strategic and more interesting along the way. Plus, the whole game is playable in about thirty minutes or so. Duel is an excellent title for gamers and couples and its hard to recommend more highly.

. Babel is really two expansions in one that can be played together or separately. The Great Works is an awesome addition to the game. The common goal and the new tactical tension are wholly welcome. The Tower of Babel, on the other hand, is OK and fairly middling and uninspired. It’s too bad the two are sold together, because if they came separately, I would heartily recommend picking one up over the other.

. Don’t get me wrong, the expansion is enjoyable. I’ve had a great time with several plays of Cities. But, I also find plays without it refreshing. It’s not that Cities is bad, just that it is not quite good enough to make up for the loss of the base game’s best assets – short play time, easy to explain, casual friendly. While I’d never turn down a game that included Cities, it’s pretty much a take-it-or-leave it expansion.

Leaders is a fantastic addition to an already enjoyable game. Will it change your experience completely and allow you to play in a totally new way? No. But it does add some excellent twists on already proven gameplay. If your gaming group enjoys 7 Wonders, then there’s a good chance that Leaders will be loved as well. It gives you more of the same, but with 7 Wonders that can only be good.

. Ace of Spies isn’t a bad game. But it caters specifically to one type of player. If you don’t enjoy that kind of gaming, or more importantly, if your friends don’t care for it, then this simply won’t be played. And it’s a shame, too, because the theme is unique and the gameplay is fun if a bit familiar. Putting in a card like False Information or Double Crossed may have seemed good during the brainstorming session, but it never should have made it past that point.

. Adrenaline is just a solid title. It is absolutely the best-in-genre for shoot-you-in-the-face style games. The deterministic combat breeds feelings of success and the quick respawns eliminate feelings of failure. It’s really a marvelous design and, unless you need dice to feel complete, it’s one you should absolutely look into.

. The Agents is a solid game, and one that I’ve come to enjoy. Tactical play, clever moves, and hard choices are characteristic of the game. It isn’t perfect, though. A similar early game and boring purchase turns do detract from otherwise excellent play. But, if you can get past that, there is a wonderful experience here. It is a fantastically interactive game that focuses just as much on disrupting opponents as it does on building yourself. The Agents is certainly worth checking out. Plus it’s quick enough to play and teach that it could easily become a staple in many gaming groups.

This game has remained a mainstay of my game stable for all of the above reasons. It is tremendous fun for about three hours. It plays differently enough that you are constantly reacting to new events while trying to implement your master plan for growing your farm. If you dabble in eurogames at all, I highly recommend Agricola.

Making the two-player version, ACBS took out many of the choices and most of the great tension from the original. This won’t give you the same feel as Agricola. What remains is “fun enough” type game. A decent enough experience, but not one that is especially unique or interesting, especially when compared with other two-player games on the market.

The bottom line is that if you like Agricola, you’ll like Farmers. It takes the basics of Agricola, adds on a thin layer of newness, tweaks some of the strategy, and even goes some distance in fixing the early wood scramble in the base game. However, if Agricola is too dry, or if you don’t like the feeling of not being able to accomplish everything, or if Agricola just isn’t your thing, then Farmers is not for you. It very much plays to Agricola’s strengths without changing the feel or tone of the base game.

Albion is an enjoyable game. Its play is simple and the strategy is up to each player to decide. In fact, I can see Albion as a "gateway" game for the non-gamers out there. It’s simple to learn, has fun components, and presents a plethora of decisions to the non-initiated. The theme might be a little dry, but compared to other gateways (like Ticket to Ride) the theme is a powerhouse of awesome.

And for good reason. The game is one of the most fun euro style games currently on the market. If you haven’t played yet, make a point of doing so.

. True, I adore the base game. But the expansion is absolutely fantastic. One of the great attributes is that it not only enlarges the breadth and depth of the game, but does so in a way that feels true to the original. This doesn’t turn Alchemists into a whole new animal, but merely takes the existing creature and gives it new bionic parts so that it can have superhero adventures. If you like Alchemists, then this is a must have expansion.

. Amerigo isn’t bad. And there will be some players who really enjoy the tactical, randomized nature of the game. But it isn’t great, either. Largely because it’s completely flavorless. There is nothing to make it stand out (beyond the cube tower) or even maintain your attention. Most players will find that there just isn’t enough substance to play this more than a handful of times.

. Amun-Re is everything an auction game should be. In fact, it’s not just a great example of an auction game, but of hobby gaming in general. The thing is chock full of tense and exciting decisions and the player feels in control every step of the way. Sure, he will have other opponents (ideally four of them) getting in his way, but he will also use what he can to foil their plans as well. It is finely balanced and tuned for consistently entertaining and engaging experiences. Definitely check this one out.

. I got hooked on Netrunner after my first play. It completely satisfies that long standing itch for a Magic-like game. The game is filled with tough and tense choices throughout the play. Even in constructing the decks, the rules there provide a number of intriguing choices which result in different decks and play styles. Netrunner is a fabulous game. The only (exceedingly minor) negative is that the base set could greatly benefit from the infusion of additional cards. But, that’s why FFG invented data packs.

. Unfortunately, the positive aspects of ApocalypZe are greatly hindered by the negative aspects. Playing starts strong, with tough and meaningful choices, moves into a middle phase where things start to get repetitive, and then ends with a long slog through mostly obvious choices. With the customization, players may be able to fix the worst offenders. But out of the box ApocalypZe, as a whole, does not deliver.

Educational Score: 4 of 5. The point of the game is to teach kids about college, especially about the numerous options that exist. Even trade and art schools are available. This can help kids who would otherwise eschew the standard four-year degree realize that there are alternatives more suited to them. Scholarships are handled well and the activities give each play a nice balance. The players can focus on those activities that are in their interests and balance them against the work needed to pay for school. Aside from the too-blunt Q&As, this game does an excellent job of teaching the subject material in an interesting way. Application Crunch successfully teaches real life lessons in an entertaining package.

Game Score: 2 of 5. Don’t get me wrong, I had a pleasant time with my plays of Application Crunch. But this is just not something I would ever be interested unless I was actively trying to teach someone about college. The game has relatively little replay value; it kind of reveals itself after just a few plays. The subject material is, frankly, boring. I’ve been through it all before in real life. And some of the mechanics – like the random draw of activities and the random starting family finances – can feel unbalanced and unfair. Maybe that is intended, just as life (as my mother always said) is unfair. Still, it can be disappointing to need four actions to submit a perfect application and draw a card granting only three. While I wouldn’t necessarily bring this to game night, I think it would make an excellent addition in the classroom. If I were back in high school, and stuck inside on a rainy day, I could think of worse things to do than break out Application Crunch and have a go at it. In that context, the game is highly appropriate and more fun than any other “educational” game out there.

. Arboretum isn’t an everyday game – the kind you hope to play repeatedly as it exposes new layers. But it also doesn’t really pretend to be. It’s a relatively simple card game that provides solid player choices and focuses on hand management. To that end it succeeds. And I’d happily play it over lunch or when time constraints are a factor.

. Despite the few minor quibbles I have (like game length with 5 players), Argent delivers an exceptional experience. Players who love options, who search for combos, and who enjoy a raucous, in-your-face experience will find the game an absolute delight. And for euro gamers, if the direct aggression isn’t a turnoff, then the interesting twist of workers with powers really helps to make the game stand out.

Despite its steep learning curve and its samey game play, Arkham Horror still makes it to my table now and again. It's a great mood piece when we really want a horror game. It also provides us with a great challenge, and can re-establish friendships that have been broken in a play of Munchkin or Diplomacy earlier in the evening. It also has a semi-RPG feel so that you can do a little bit of role-playing without committing to a character over the next several months. And, if you're at all a fan of Lovecraftian literature, I'd recommend picking up Arkham Horror.

. Arkwright is an engaging economic game. It’s filled with tough decisions and long-term thought. While the playtime is perhaps just a bit too long for this title to see the kind of play it deserves, it nevertheless delivers a fantastic experience and with enough variation to satisfy most.

. Ars Victor is a wonderful light war game. It’s exciting, tense, easy to learn, and yet provides a wealth of strategic options. While the dice sill seem soft on combat for some players, the overall experience – and the jockeying for position on capture points – is simply quite fun. Playing Ars Victor allows you to use your tactical, combat oriented side without having to learn hundreds of rules or be committed to hours of gaming. If you are interested in light war games, then this is definitely one to check out.
